  1. The deal I would be pushing is: Tom takes $100k drop We pay $250k New club pays $350k No use having him on the list and the above frees up $450k of our salary cap. For the recipient club it is a 2 year risk on minimum money just like us with KK and Bennell etc etc. For those saying why should Tom take a drop the answer is simple. At Melbourne he wont get a game and in two years his career is effectively finished.
  2. The issue here is not the government grant for the stadium. No club has paid for the construction of its game day stadium. The issue is that all the other clubs pay ground rent each time they use the stadium whereas Geelong doesn't. Ground rents come in multiple forms including share of gate receipts, advertising, catering rights etc. Transparency in stadium deals given that they are taxpayer funded would be a good start. There's no reason for them to be commercial in confidence given that there is no alternative provider/customer.
  3. No...that's the biggest seller of all... artificially created scarcity and why it's a great money spinner in the form of reserved seats. Adelaide have mastered this art. Geelong probably need a crowd of near 85k at the MCG to match what they could get from 40k at Kardinia Park
  4. That would be very foolish You can't sell a training base on land you don't own. Have a look at North's books if you want to see a perfect example of technical insolvency combined with relatively useless assets. Sure use a little of the money say 20% like the Hawks were planning for Dingley.
  5. We are now moving into the next phase and perhaps once again those of us that apply traditional logic need to be wary. The next phase is the spin and fake news coming out of the White House and Republican machine in support of the "voter fraud" line. We may know it's BS but for many Trump supporters which make up half of America's voters they actually believe it. I doubt that he will get much comfort from the Courts. The Gore v Bush arguments were very real by comparison whereas the Trump contentions are ephemeral and isolated at best. The real damage is that he will leave at least 25% of Americans believing that the Presidency was stolen from them in the worst sense of the word. Such beliefs will legitimize Republicans stymieing the Democrats at every turn including that now well known tactic of limiting/rejecting money bills. Do we want to see a return to Government services being stopped simply because they cannot pay the wage bill.
  6. Decent question. Football is a business and Geelong gets a very good return on that stadium. Sure there's community benefit but that pales by comparison to the business returns to Geelong.
  7. Trump supporters turning on their own. In defence of Fox their election day coverage was reasonable. Not to be confused with that of their regular hosts which was out there to say the least.... https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/nov/05/fox-news-sucks-trump-supporters "On Facebook, on a now-deleted group for Trump supporters that claimed Democrats were trying to steal the election, dozens of commenters described how “totally betrayed” they felt while watching Fox News on election night."
  8. In fairness the most documented rigging was that of Democratic Mayor Daley of Chicago and the Teamsters Union. JFK owed his presidency to the deals done by his bootlegging father with the boys from Chicago as did Truman and many others. The Republicans appear to have more relied on gaming the system (voter control/racism) for their wins. One thing bought up in this election was the concept of vote harvesting where a middleman is paid to deliver completed postal votes. Not really sure how it works and who pays but certainly a worry. I'm sure many dead people have voted for both sides in Australian politics. Not sure we have ever done much to deter the practice if it is still occurring.
  9. The Fox election day coverage was quite good with a balanced panel and a decision making backroom panel etc. Over the last two days they have moved back to their normal commentators/hosts and boy is it biased. Watching this morning as a guest complained about scrutineers not being allowed in etc and the host nodded and then expressed vehement agreement. (Neither mentioned that it was all about the Republicans wanting MORE scrutineers)
  10. Georgia,,,, Biden 1800 votes down with 50k (1%) left to count
  11. agree but it was Hogan at low salary with kickers.... not a bad deal For GWS it's a much better deal than say Patton or Bennell. Do we yet have insight into the money and contract length offer?
  12. In the case of developing countries democracy is often a brake on economic development as it results in the inefficient delivery of resources to satisfy elements of the constituency. It's all about trade offs. Most of the so called democratic countries outside the West are rife with corruption and cronyism. Iran is a democracy but it has been perverted by a religious overlay. Turkey is fast going down a similar path. Vietnam seems to have achieved a decent balance but who knows it could do a China and crackdown on everything. Then you have many of the former Soviet States which are all democratic to some extent and in the main are basket cases from an economic viewpoint. Australia lucked into compulsory voting, preferential voting and a mainly two party system. It delivers a largely workable system and fingers crossed it continues. The recent border closures shows however how fragile the Federation is when faced with major challenges.
  13. My popcorn is in danger of going stale. I'm still floored by the fact that Trump increased his vote. I have applied varying attempts at logic and they all fail. Could it be that democracy as we know it is perhaps not the most efficient form of government when in so many countries it can be manipulated by religion race and sheer ignorance. Problem is I can't think of a better one. What is even more worrying is who will the Republicans put up in 2024.....Ivanka Trump perhaps. If you've never seen it watch Game Changer an insider version of Sarah Palin and John McCain in 2008. We all laughed at it but it was a true portent of US politics. Mind you the Democrats are not free of fault when they put up such tired hacks as candidates.
  14. The getting of sponsorship is his job... a drop of 10% is easily attributed to on field performance...not his job. The re-signing of sponsors in 2020 given our 2019 performance and the virus was a decent performance. MFC has many problems IMO but Pert is not at the top for now.
  15. came across this .....deserves to be framed !!
  16. Arizona fast going back into the doubtful basket. 500k votes tobe counted. Although they are pre polls they were the ones delivered on election day and are expected to favour Trump as the Biden pre pollers favoured voting early. Could be a potential game changer.
  17. 2% of votes around 90k still to be counted in Georgia with Biden trailing by 30k Biden would need to take over 70% of the remaining vote to win Close
  18. It's all over Sports Bet have paid out on Biden ? Watching the ads on Fox News has certainly expanded my knowledge on medical and health quackery in the 21st century not to mention they have an online business prepared to broker almost anything for a fee.
  19. Not surprised as many sponsorship contracts have kickers if you make finals... (more exposure). If anything surprised that in 2019 it was not down further by comparison to 2018. Sponsorship dollars are directly related to TV exposure... Hard to blame Pert for that. Let's remember that MFC is a medium size business at best in a highly controlled industry where the opportunity to grow your market is restrained to say the least.
  20. On the off topic discussion. I have increasingly become a student of alternative history. Simply spelt it means looking at history from multiple angles. Tharoor's book for all his faults is incredibly well argued and thought provoking. A few years ago in Kolkata I came upon a house turned into a small museum. It was the home of Chandra Bose. Why had I as a very well educated Westerner never heard of him. India treats him as a national hero. Anyway back to the race and nice to have some reasoned discussion. Thanks Trump edging away in Michigan (24klead) but still around 900k votes to count PS.. have been noticing a third candidate Jo Jorgensen... Pauline Hanson on steroids from my quick research. Seriously though you wonder if there is room for a third party spoiler in the future given how close the parties have become numbers wise. Would be a nightmare for the two big parties.
  21. Pensylvania will drop an enormous number of votes in one hit in the next few hours. For reasons I can't understand that State will not publish the pre poll votes before they have finished counting all the election day votes Get ready for a big shift If Trump hadn't lost me three plus years ago how bad do you have to be to question your own country's voting system. Undermining trust in institutions is what third world dictators are so good at. PS... Trump now only 60k ahead in Michigan with around 600k votes to be counted.
  22. Michigan is now the key... win that Nevada and Wisconsin and he wins
  23. On my quick calculations in Pensylvania he would need almost an 80-20 split to make up the difference. (64% of the vote presently counted) Much the same in Wisconsin but in that state 94% of the vote has been counted. In normal times this would be impossible but given that Trump told his base to avoid the post it might be achieved. Michigan is a little easier at somewhere near 70/30 if not a little less with 80% of the vote counted. (Michigan alone only gets him to 260 [assuming Biden takes Nevada ] so he would need another State assuming Georgia goes to Trump) Remember that the postal votes also include international and military votes that will have a more normal distribution.
  24. If you're told to look elsewhere it's not exactly a ringing endorsement. I wouldn't expect them to say ...you have no place... they know as we all do that it's quite possible we'll be stuck with him The interesting thing which we won't be told is whether his manager was given an idea of how much of his salary we would pickup
  25. Easier to see a Trump victory at present than one for Biden. Very close. Could the world's nightmare continue...... amazing
