We have 34 senior and 3 A-rookies ie 37 players. We are allowed a max of 42 so we can't have 5 senior list spots and 1 A rookie. But I get your point - there are any number of combinations of player types within the rules. To keep it simple I assumed the current mix which I think is what we will stick to mainly because there is less pressure on the sal cap.

Francis and Weideman, who were both taken inside the first 10 picks in the 2015 draft, have been linked to the the Swans and Bombers respectively for third-round picks as they look for more senior opportunities. AFL Media reports Melbourne would prefer the third rounder to come from Essendon though, while Sydney’s selection is more likely to be in this year’s draft, meaning a pick swap is also on the cards. Sydney have: 14, 17, 37, 75. Ess have: 4, 22, 42, 62, 68 Technically Weideman is worth more in picks than the others as he is in contract while the others haven't been offered a contract. tbh I'm not sure of letting Sam go if we are going to replace him with Schache. Not much saving in $ and not sure what the benefit is in a like-forl-like. We would have to offer Schache two years Ironically if we get Schache to replace Weideman that is picks 2, 9 and 6 (Francis) from the 2015 draft all changing clubs at the same time for 'equal' value.. Not a good draft for early selections of tall players.

For info. We currently have two senior list spots, three A-Rookie spots and one B-Rookie spot with Baker, Hibberd and Melksham out of contract, the latter two having been offered 1 year deals.

Grundy in contract. Jackson wasn't. They are bluffing. They want to get Fiorini from GCS and Mitchell from Hawks. If they keep Grundy they have neither the sal cap nor draft picks to do those trades. A pick within first 25 was their ambit claim. As others have said about our trades there is no reason to meet what they want. Even tho he is under contract they don't want him. Not much leverage. Call their bluff!

He was always going back and soon rather than later. Writing was on the wall two years ago when he extended his contract by only one year. Neither he nor mfc were going to break his contract last year.

No pulling it apart from me - reckon it is a great plan. Just a minor question: not sure where those picks for this year will come from unless we convert some future picks to this year which is easily doable. Doubt Ess will give us a 2022 pick for Weideman if he goes as they need points for Davey jr.

Maybe but we haven't used a pick over 35 for the last three years and I doubt the Weid pick will be better than that ie a 2nd round pick. We could get a better pick from Ess if we include a future pick with weidemen but they don' have much to offer this year and they need points for Davey jr so are more likely to offer a future pick for Weidemen.

We could promote Turner scheduled for 2023, one year early and take just one pick to the draft. Having said that Lamb said last week we will take two draftees so some movement to come with #13 or as you say 2023 picks.

There are lots of ways to look at this topic. The points you make a fair when looking at success of players who don't 'go home'. The main issue is for me is when top end picks go home within 1-3 years. Of the 8 in the list I posted 7 were top 5 picks and 'went home' within a couple of years of being drafted. It is too easy for a draftee to say: I'll go where I'm drafted but I can go home after a year two. There needs to be a way where clubs that draft in the top 5 or top 10 to have their investment protected. I don't have any answers to how that can happen...

It depends how many F/S and Academy players there are next year and how highly they are rated, This year Ashcroft (pick 1/2) and Fletcher are top 10. Davey jr is in the 10-20 range and iirc there is at least one other NGA player in that range. Those clubs cash out their first round and high second round picks and use late 2nd and later picks to match. Because next year's clubs that can match bids will cash out their first and high second round picks Freo's F2 likely to be around pick 30-33, may not come in much if at all.

Our exposure to 'flight risk' is high as we have 6 players from SA/WA/NT who are recent recruits and are or likely to be in our best 25: Top of the list are JVR and Kozzie. Then there is Rivers, Woewodin, Mc Vee, Monz-Wakefield. I've excluded ANB, Sparrow, Chandler, Petty and others who have shown a longer commitment to the club. It is those that leave in the first 1-3 years of their draft which are the most concern as a club gets little return for the development that has been invested in them.

Jackson deciding in the middle of the year explains Goodwin's comment around that time that the club had said no pressure to decide, just give us your best football for the rest of the season. That comment now looks like the club was concerned he would tune out. It is hard to say whether he did or didn't but it wasn't a good season from him. I'm indifferent to him leaving. He is now just another bogan.

Regarding the points clac their F2 is roughly offset by getting our 44 and 67 this year both of which will come in a long way after the second and third round picks are used for matching F/S and academy bids. 44 will become 30 something and 67 will become 50 something, So the points value of the deal is worth 13 and F1. Pick wise they get a 2nd and 3rd round pick this year while we get their F2 which are roughly equal). Forget the points; enjoy the 'death ride'; we will all be on that train with you🙃.

Just saw the full trade and Port are getting some later future picks back. PORT ADELAIDE Trade out: Picks No.8, 43, 53, 57, 2023 first-round pick, 2023 second-round pick, 2023 third-round pick Trade in: Jason Horne-Francis, Junior Rioli, 2023 second-round pick (tied to Collingwood), 2023 future third-round pick (tied to Fremantle). To me it looks a steal if Port get JHF and Rioli for pick 8 and a F1 around pick 9-12 and a pile of later picks with some back. Points aside, they must be laughing! Mega Trade

Updated for: the departures of Jackson, Bedford, Hunt, Rosman and M. Brown. Tomlinson shown OOC at end of 2024 was end of 2023. Still uncertain. Chandler's promotion altho it won't be official until draft night. Have assumed draft pick #86 will be used for that. List size information has been updated. Draft pick status for 2022/2023 has been added to the table. Players still OOC are: Baker, Hibberd and Melksham altho the latter two appear certain to be offered one year contracts.

So his trade to GWS pick 44 has been dealt to Freo as part of the Jackson trade. Did we get anything else from GWS? Disappointing if we didn't as Lamb was fairly strong when he rejected 44 last week.

Even with Fyfe in, imv they can cover the loss/replacement of some of the players I mentioned but losing 4 of your best 22 and 6 of your best 25 is quite a lot of assimilation to do. Not the least of which is Jackson's role and synergy in the midfield/ruck.

Thank you. I doubt their will be a 'demise' per se. Just that success isn't always linear and they will need to educate/assimilate quite a few new players in their game plan, rolls, ball movement etc so it most likely a slide for just a year. They have great midfield guns and Mundy's experience was huge in the mid-field. Fyfe is injured more often than not so not sure who will be the mature steadying force in the midfield for them. It was interesting that they were on a long winning streak and then when Fyfe came in they started to lose. While there were other reasons I think he upset a winning formula and they never quite found a home for him. Lack of maturity in the team to adjust? Just not sure they are mature enough or settled enough to absorb the changes to their best 22/25. Time will tell

To elaborate on why I think Freo won't make the 8 next year: Their major list changes: Out: Logue: 20 games in 2022 Tucker: 14 games in 2022 Acres: 20 games in 2022 Mundy: 22 games in 2022 Lobb (probably): 21 games in 2022 Meek (probably): 8 games in 2022 In: Jackson: 22 games in 2022 Corbett: 4 games in 2022 Sharp (probably): 12 games in 2022 They may have others coming in but they are unlikely to overcome my doubts: They are losing a lot of experience from their best year in eons and not a lot of experience back in. It will take them a while to assimilate new players and fill the gaps by those going out. Synergy and consistency are big factors in winning games and I reckon it will take them a long time to get that next year and to settle in new players. By which time their chances of the 8 may have slipped. I expect Port and Carlton to make the 8 next year and I see Freo and Bulldogs as the most vulnerable to fall out. They will have a harder draw. So I'm happy to take Freo's future pics.
