Simon Goodwin Sacked
If that is correct one wonders where his allegiance lies. Not sure what Jobe brings to the panel or whether he has any experience in selection panels, candidate assessment etc Plenty of other more successful ex players to choose from. Jordan Lewis for one. He has had a couple of similar gigs and knows first hand what makes a successful coach.

Jason Taylor Re-Signs on Long Term Deal (2021 Thread)
BUMP! Sorry, no news! Can anyone advise when his contract expires? I thought it was this year but desperately hope I'm wrong! Even if it is next year, hope we extend his contract soon.

imv we won't ever know if the sacking was a mistake. And, the results/success of the next coach are independent of the past. The next coach will be hamstrung for at least the first season because of soft cap limiting assistant coaching/FD changes and contracts limiting list management decisions. And how would his success be measured. Finals Reversing this trend. Win more close games. Scoring efficiency Play 4 quarters. etc I am quietly confident we can make finals next year even tho finals are getting harder; this year 15 wins are needed. imv the critical thing is reversing the trend so winning 13 games and a % greater than 100 will be a success for the new coach. Regardless, it doesn't say anything about sacking Goodwin being a mistake nor does it say Goodwin could or could not have achieved the same results. Time to move on.

Not sure straight sets exit is enough to not renew a contract just two years after a premiership but we may need to agree to disagree on that point. But OK, let's say the Board delayed renewal into 2024. Goodwin had introduced the 'transition' game plan with which we had reasonable results: at round 11 we were 7/4 sitting 4th with a healthy 116.9% heading for finals. Couldn't ask for more than that. To not have renewed his contract by this point would have been very irresponsible. No one could have predicted the downward spiral in the second half of the year.

Regardless of Goodwin's results since the contract renewal or results by his successor there is no way the renewal was a mistake. It was renewed in August '23 after Premiership, 2nd and 4th results. It would expire in '24. There is no way a sane Board would allow that coach to enter 2024 without an ongoing contract. There was no basis to not renew it. Also, in his 2022 contract he left money on the table to not blow the covid soft cap or have to reduce FD staff. The latest contract gave that money back to him, hence the $1m payout. That contract was thoroughly deserved and people who lament the $1m payout could reflect on the circumstances. Given the results at August '23 it could have been tempting to renew for 3 or more years. That the Board renewed it in two year chunks is very responsible.

2025 List and Contract Details
Thanks R&BF iirc a 'R' FA is in the top 10% player payments. Not sure all those 'R' are so should they choose to go we can't match the offer. Of course rules may have changed. btw, is Fritsch 31yo?

All good binman. No I didn't think nor mean to imply that in my earlier post. It was about him speaking as if he was blindsided.

I'm positive he knew his job was on the line with or without the Board presentation. By saying the sacking was unexpected and there was no indication the Board presentation was for his job is Goodwin writing his own narrative. Ditto, the only reason given was needing a 'fresh voice'. He knows there were other contributing factors some raised briefly in last night's AFL360.

He didn't use the word 'blindsided' but he said he hadn't expected it and there was no indication the Board meeting presentation might be for his job? That sounds like blindsided to me...

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
Yes, hence why connected was in 'quotation marks'.

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
True it would take mere seconds. But someone 'connected' to the club made the conscious decision to inform TM.

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
Tom Morris broke the news. The question is who leaked it to him? On Monday night a lot of people would have known: Board member/very senior manager or their partners/families. Goodwin or his partner/family/manager/network. A senior player/assistant coach. It needn't be someone who leaked to him in the past. Lever sounded like he was of a mind to find out! But it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Daniel Turner - Next MFC Captain?
Sure. But what did we do when he retired nearly two years ago? It isn't just what they do around the club. Among other things they need to represent the club with media, sponsors, management, future players etc and this takes exposure and practice. I'm not seeing many new faces since Brayshaw retired. As I said Lever, Viney etc need to make way for the younger candidates to officially be leaders.
-
Daniel Turner - Next MFC Captain?
I'm miffed that we have no discernible succession plan for Max. There was a much touted leaders development program started by Shand at the off-site camp last pre-season. Suspect it fell by the wayside along with his other recommendations. Keep Max, but its time for Viney, Lever etc to make way for some younger guys (eg Rivers, Lindsay, Turner) in the official leadership team.

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
Its been reported on DL that we have TPP space. If so we can bring forward some of the long term contract payments into this year which iirc ends Oct 31. eg Kozzie, Max, Oliver, Petracca etc. If willing it could be done in a way to shave a year or two off Viney's contract. Same money, fewer years.
-
Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
No it isn't that bad. imv our list lacks depth (several years of poor trading in of players) and we have messed around the development of our youth. Hence some senior players have played when they shouldn't have. With a fresh mind to define a revised game plan and evaluate the list attributes against that game plan a new coach will start making changes to the list and more importantly to game day selections. It may not all happen this year but with two off seasons we should see real change. We can easily bounce back to finals next year and go deeper in 2027..

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
If it is Buckley, why the charade of a selection panel etc? Established coaches eg Longmire, Simpson or highly rated Assistants that have gone thru 'the process' elsewhere and missed out, aren't going 'to apply'. A bit embarrassing to miss out. It will unnecessarily slow down selection just to avoid the optics of 'lack of due process/good governance'. People get appointed all the time without a process: Goodwin, Hardwick (GCS) Brad Scott, Carr, Cox. If its Buckley just do it! Don't waste everyone's time and precious time.

POSTGAME: Rd 22 vs Western Bulldogs
I don't think the game plan has changed. It has looked different/better in the last three games: Saints, WCE and WBD as they aren't renowned for strong defence. Nonetheless, it is good for the team to know it does work and in-game practice is essential. Hopefully, it stacks up vs Hawks and Pies.

POSTGAME: Rd 22 vs Western Bulldogs
I seem to be the odd one out on how good the game was as at the ground the first half was a bit of a snore fest: Both teams applied little pressure, their kicking for goal was poor and they looked to be just going thru the motion in 2nd gear. In the 3rd qtr those 3 things changed dramatically to make it a really exciting game. When we hit the front the crowd roared!! It was a great feeling, reminiscent of times past. It was a small crowd that made a lot of noise. It was at that point I felt the players and fans really lift and put the drama of the past week behind them. Didn't get a win but It was a great way to end the week and give everyone some momentum for the next few!

Who Will Be Our Next Coach?
In late April various reports said we had sounded out Beveridge which he understandably denied. totally-invested-here-luke-beveridge-distances-himself-from-melbourne-demons-move We likely spoke to others so I don't doubt Buckley was one of them. We started 0-5 unsurprising the club started looking around.

PREGAME: Rd 22 vs Western Bulldogs
Adams is great news! I wonder who misses from last week? May sounded like we want another tall down back... The defenders on the bench are McVee and part timers Windsor and Petty. Given we want McVee to re-sign It would be foolish to drop him 😢would it not 😭

That's A-I for you! It makes bad journo's worse!

NON-MFC: Round 22
Pies fans are sore losers! LOL! Their 19th man went home somewhere around qtr time!!! In the last quarter there was barely one left. So much for their 'big loud' crowd they brag about.

JV also supports the decision. “Yeah we all built strong relationships with Goody over the last nine to 11 years, but unfortunately, we’re not sitting where we want to be as a football club, you know the club have to make tough decisions to try get us back into finals contention again. “So we understand that as a playing group and [are] fully supportive of that. brutal-industry-jack-viney-speaks-out-on-sacking-of-coach-simon-goodwin Some here may say he is just towing the company line but if so he could have worded it very differently. Like Max, Jack saw the need for change. Given Goodwin in 2021 said Jack was his favourite player, Jack's take on the sacking is significant. Both leaders are heart and soul players, they wouldn't have enjoyed 2 years of bottom 6 finishes. They want to get back to finals again, as we all do.
