Sorry, but I don't see this. Goddard has clearly had issues at St Kilda for some time. Essendon made him an offer and St Kilda chose not to match it. As RPFC says, Essendon have had salary cap issues in the past, and they will presumably have to offload Monfries and other players to stay under the cap. St Kilda can now actively seek the ruckman and key defender that they want. As for Port Adelaide, neither Chaplin or Pearce have been consistent performers this year, and would have both been likely candidates for trades even if free agency didn't exist. You can't blame free agency for players wanting to leave the dismal environment provided by clubs like Port and Melbourne. Ultimately this system will help players ranked 15 - 30 on each clubs list extend and further their careers. There will be the odd Goddard who changes clubs, but the salary cap will ensure that it does not become a free for all.

Utterly useless and should have been delisted two years ago. 5 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles a game is rubbish by anyones standards, let alone a fourth year player. I only hope this club views Jamie with the head rather than the heart. That doesn't mean we shouldn't help him with his recovery and his life after football, but he is simply not an AFL player.

Seriously Jared, enough already. If you want to play for the MFC next year, sign a contract and be done with it. If you want to leave, show some kohunas and come out and say it. I can understand wanting to play finals with Geelong, but moving to another bottom half side would see a lot of people lose respect for you. You've been a good player, but hardly a superstar, so don't expect people to make a big song and dance to keep you around.

A hardened body? Now I've heard everything.

So, another year of pissweak performances from a supposedly senior player awaits. I'm sure he is practising his pointing and his staging for free kicks already. If he ever won a one-on-one contest, I think I'd die of shock.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - DAVID RODAN
poita replied to Demon Head's topic in Melbourne Demons
Put him on the rookie list on minimum wage and he can play for his supper if he is interested. I certainly wouldn't give up players, picks or more than a few bucks for him. -
I can't see Roughead moving in a million years but, instead of [censored] farting around with Z-graders like Byrnes & Pederson, this is the type of big fish that we should be chasing. Throw him $800K a year and see what happens. Note Richmond's pursuit of Dom Tyson (a top 5 pick from last year) - we would never have the balls to chase after a required, contracted player. We only chased Mitch Clark after he announced he was leaving Brisbane. It is time for us to get serious.

Barring a draft windfall, I expect us to finish bottom 2 next year. The sides around us on the ladder have much greater scope for improvement than we do. That may still be 4-5 wins depending on how other teams perform.

Very impressed to see Geelong fielding basically a full contingent of listed AFL players in their VFL side yesterday. Just amazing how a successful club with a winning culture is keen to see their best young players taste premiership success and experience grand final intensity, even if it is at the lower level. Contrast that to the MFC, and the loser culture that it has perfected over the past 48 years. If this club can't see that a VFL finals campaign is not of greater benefit to players like Fitzpatrick & Spencer, then a few weeks of fitness training in November, then I can't see any prospect of us becoming a premiership contender in the next ten years.

At the risk of derailing this thread completely, you can't closely watch Strauss' woeful efforts against Matera, Ballantyne and others in the run home and tell me that he is not the softest player ever to wear our jumper. Plus his decision making skills are atrocious - sure he might end up with high disposal efficiency, but that is because most of his touches are panic handballs to a bloke a metre away. Anyone who can keep Strauss out of the team is fine by me.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CAMERON PEDERSEN
poita replied to Hannibal's topic in Melbourne Demons
The guy will be 26 before next season starts, has played 16 career games, and can't get a game in a middle of the road side behind such luminaries as Robbie Tarrant. Why would anyone think this would be a good deal, particularly as compensation for Gysberts or Martin, both of whom should be clearly inside our best 22 next year? -
You do remember Jamar's selection in 2010?

Amazing how Geelong, coming off an AFL premiership last year, have been able to achieve the following in 2012: AFL team wins 15 games AFL team has ten debutants VFL team makes grand final There seems to be a lot of people on this board who think that we can afford not to (1) give our younger players a taste of senior football, even if they might not quite be ready for it and (2) fully support our VFL alliance. Whereas, the fact that the better sides do exactly these things is a major part of why they are successful. Note also, that Geelong's senior team has postponed its Mad Monday celebrations to support the VFL team, and hasn't rushed players into surgery or holidays.

I still don't understand why Strauss is not on the list. He and Bennell would be the first to go if I was in charge.

How exciting. Players ranked 38 and 39 on our list are committed to the cause. Now we just need those who have done anything of note in the past four years to come on board too.

Aaron Davey reconsidering his position at Melbourne
poita replied to Brayshaw Self's topic in Melbourne Demons
If Aaron is having foot issues, it is probably because of the size of the pay cheque he is carrying around with him. Perhaps we can negotiate to something more in line with his performances since 2009 ($100K/season, perhaps), and everybody will be better off. -
As much as I am looking forward to watching Pearce bludging around the forward line and comparing pay packets all day with Davey, how about we target some players who have the desire, just not the opportunity, rather than vice versa?

Aaron Davey reconsidering his position at Melbourne

The first two are girls, then a boy, not sure about the last two. -
Neita was a very good player (at times), but is a long way off Hall of Fame quality. He didn't do enough on the big stage to justify that accolade. I would argue that Garry Lyon is worthy of inclusion ahead of Neitz, due to his superior finals record.

Anyone who gives pass marks (ie 5 or more) to more than five players (Jones, Clark, McDonald, Howe & Grimes) this year is kidding themselves. Everyone else massively underachieved, which is why we won four games and finished with a percentage in the mid-60s. If we ever win a premiership, some of you guys will be giving 15 out of 10.
-
Now we want to get rid of our best ruckman as well? We won't win a game next year (or for about five years) if this continues.
-
If it keeps Strauss and / or Macdonald out of the team, that is more than enough reason to get him.
-
This club has had just seven live draft picks across the past two national drafts, despite having a list which has been an unmitigated disaster for the past six years. If Neeld gets around to cutting some dead wood this year, it is only because he (and Bailey) went far too soft in previous years. And so far, the only players who have left have either been past Best & Fairest winners or Leading Goalkickers; I can't see that any of the true dead wood (Bennell, Strauss, Bate, Dunn, Macdonald, etc) has gone yet. It is alright to say lets get rid of the guys who can't be bothered commiting to the cause, but not if the guys who remain have done nothing to show that they are capable of becoming decent AFL players.

Well done to Maric on being totally rubbish from go to whoa, and still managing to stretch his career out for five years across two clubs. Far better players than Maric have been given less time to show themselves for some reason (Shane Valenti anyone?). A breathtakingly bad selection, whichever way you look at it.

Clark, Pearce, Monfries fuschias' foreign legion
poita replied to bush demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
I can't wait until we can load up with a bunch of C-grade rejects from other battling clubs. Premiership cup, here we come.
