A small forward with no goal sense, or a midfielder who doesn't find the footy enough? I don't think he has played in defence yet, but I feel like people are clutching at straws thinking he has the tools to play there. 36 games over 4 years is enough opportunity to show something, even with a few injuries, and I don't think he comes close to demanding a new contract. Delist for me.

If you like little taps backward to the advantage of the opposition midfielders, then Jamar is your man. If you like a ruckman who isn't a witches hat and who actually contributes around the ground, then Martin is your man. Mark Jamar 2012 season: 14 games averaging 8.3 disposals and 2.1 marks, plus 1 goal. Stefan Martin 2012 season: 7 games averaging 13.9 disposals and 4.4 marks, plus 7 goals. Plus Jamar is three and a half years older than Martin and is clearly in a downwards spiral, both in terms of his body and his football nous. I would trade Jamar to GWS for a low first round pick and run with Martin and Spencer next year, supported by Fitzpatrick and (hopefully) Gawn.

I don't agree with all of our decisions to date, but would much rather see us try something and fail rather than sit on our hands and do nothing. So, credit where credit is due. Having said that, additions to the list are only one side of the equation. Now we have to see what happens on the subtractions side. If we do not have a serious purge of our Z-graders (Bennell, Bate, etc), then I would consider this off season a bare pass at best.

I'd be tempted to pay Joel Macdonald not to play for us next year. His so-called improved disposal comes from a very low base, and his decision making remains terrible. Keeping a 28 year old with these flaws would be a sure sign that this club is going nowhere. Delist, please.

The Cook debacle further highlights the nonsense of drafting players based on running and kicking skills exhibited at draft camp. If you can't actually find the football, it doesn't matter how well you use it. And running ability is only an asset if you run to the right places. Same applies to Tapscott, Bennell, Strauss and most of our draft picks from the past five years.
-
Does anyone else get the sense that Cook is actually surprised that he is being delisted? You would think a prolonged stint in the VFL reserves would wake most people up, but clearly Lucas is not quite as sharp as the average bear.
-
Why are we chasing a bunch of key forwards when the problem is not our forward line efficiency, but the lack of forward 50 entries? How about some midfielders, please Mr Neeld (and yes I know we have Viney, but he is not going to be able to do it all by himself).

From the bottom of a sauce bottle – 3 way trade
poita replied to Number 2's topic in Melbourne Demons
You are dreaming if you think Stef Martin and Farren Ray have the same trade value. Martin and Dawes might be more comparable. That would be a definite loss for us. -
I believe Geelong seriously rate (their) Mitch Brown, and his progress has stalled only due to injury. There is very little chance of him leaving with Podsiadly nearing the end. As an aside, I still cannot comprehend why we would consider releasing Gysberts when teams the calibre of Geelong are interested in him.

Ricky can certainly play, so I think he is worth keeping. I have always thought he would be better played off a HBF as he did in 2007, rather than a mid sized leading forward. If the club can't turn him around next year it will reflect poorly on their player management skills.

I see nothing in this guy to suggest that he can be even a mid-range AFL player. He is the weakest player I have seen in a MFC jumper and is far too easily nudged under the football even by players who are younger and smaller, eg Matera. Most of his possessions seem to be rushed handpasses after he dithers and panics for about five seconds waiting for someone to tell him what to do. Delist please.

I have supreme confidence that Cale will be a very good AFL player in time. The question is whether this club has any confidence in itself to iron out his remaining kinks, or whether someone else will get all the benefits. If Cale gets a smooth, injury free pre-season, a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised this year. I know nothing about Brett Meredith, but a fair trade for a player with those stats would be Bennell.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JESSE HOGAN
poita replied to Little Richard's topic in Melbourne Demons
Hogan is only a good deal at pick 3 if you think we wouldn't have been in a position to get him anyway in 2013. I would suggest there is every chance that we will have another pick in the top 3 next year, which means that we would be right in the mix to have taken him at the proper time. History will show that most, if not all, of the mini draft trades have been massive overspends. GWS must be laughing themselves sick. -
Can someone please tell me why everyone other than Neeld and his band of merry men can see value in Gysberts. Same goes for Martin.
-
We could give Cook another five years and all we would end up with is another Newton / Molan / Rogers / Smith debacle. When a player is no good, and Cook is clearly not ever going to become an AFL player (or even a decent VFL player at this rate), the best course of action for all concerned is to call it quits.
-
I would consider pick 13 for both, although am not really keen on either. Realistically we could have Carey and Lockett in our forward line and it would make no difference to our success until we start getting more than 30 inside 50s a game. Dawes certainly is not the missing link.
-
We are in bigger trouble than I thought if we are seriously considering this guy. And potentially for a pick inside the top 50? God help us.

Bail is one of those players who looks okay in a crap side because he generally has a crack. He will never be part of a decent side because he can't kick and makes bad decisions. The number of games he plays each year will be a fair indication of where we are on the ladder at the time.
-
Amazing to see the contrast between the hard working, inspirational Davey of 2004 and the soft, pampered Davey of 2009 onwards. Bailey should be shot for indulging Davey and allowing him to become a receiver with no defensive side. I think he is gone. He has lost his speed and doesn't win his own football any more. If Neeld has any guts at all he will start Davey at Casey and make him earn his spot, unlike this year.

We could have a salary cap of $100 million and still wouldn't be any good. It's not how much you have, it is what you do with it, and Sydney crap all over us in that respect.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - SHANNON BYRNES
poita replied to Pates's topic in Melbourne Demons
Congratulations to the Casey Scorpions for kicking off their 2013 recruiting drive with the selection of Shannon Byrnes. Fielding a side with Byrnes and other pensioners Aaron Davey and Mark Jamar, plus a long list of younger MFC-listed VFL-standard players, should ensure that Casey are well positioned for a run at the 2013 VFL flag. -
I'm pretty sure I'd rather keep Bennell and Strauss than have Slattery at the club, and Bennell and Strauss are the first two players I would delist.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY
poita replied to einstein251's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm sure he is just sick of being asked questions he isn't able to answer. I'm sure Jack will happily go wherever he is drafted and be a very good player for that team. From the MFC perspective, if we rank him within our top 4 draft prospects we should take him at pick 3. If not GC17 can have him and I'm sure we'll draft yet another injury prone stick insect instead. -
Jon Giles 2012 season: 20 games averaging 14.2 disposals and 3.5 marks, plus 18 goals. Mark Jamar 2012 season: 14 games averaging 8.3 disposals and 2.1 marks, plus 1 goal. Stefan Martin 2012 season: 7 games averaging 13.9 disposals and 4.4 marks, plus 7 goals. Plus Jamar is four and a half years older than Giles and three and a half years older than Martin. I know who my preferred ruck combination would be, and it wouldn't include the virtual witches hat wearing number 40.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHRIS DAWES
poita replied to Norm Smith's Curse's topic in Melbourne Demons
Why would we trade the best ruckman on our list for a giant plodder? I'll take Dawes for a third round pick please, or Collingwood can throw in a decent draft pick for us if they want Martin.
