Potential Trades [Warning: Reading this thread may self-destruct]
poita replied to Dr evil's topic in Melbourne Demons
That's about it for me too. We will start next year with a significantly weaker squad than we had this year, and nothing has been done about the midfield (barring a late miracle). -
Pick 25 is in the Beams deal as well. I think Collingwood have done okay.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HERITIER LUMUMBA
poita replied to Moonshadow's topic in Melbourne Demons
Amazing that Geelong's announcement has Clark in a Geelong jumper, but ours has Lumumba in a Collingwood jumper. Does anybody at the club have a clue how to promote themselves? -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HERITIER LUMUMBA
poita replied to Moonshadow's topic in Melbourne Demons
Let's be realistic here. Collingwood can't wait to be rid of Lumumba here. They have no bargaining power whatsoever and should be happy to take what they are given. Especially given that they need Lumumba off the list to afford Greenwood. Geelong are not the sort of team to be making speculative player trades. They are keen on Clark because they think he is mentally and physically able to play decent football for them next year. If he plays regularly, and Geelong are seemingly comfortable that he will, he is clearly worth way more than Varcoe. Geelong need to give us something extra and I hope the club stand firm in demanding a pick. -
If it gets Evans off the list, sure. Otherwise, no thanks.
-
Surely you'd delist and pay out Evans in a heartbeat if a decent DFA appeared on the horizon. I'm sure I could find a couple of other candidates if I looked for another 5 seconds or so.
-
Yep, I can see Sydney and Hawthorn supporters slitting their wrists at not improving their lists. They might only win 16 games next year, instead of 20. It's a bit more significant when you haven't won more than 4 games in the past 4 years.

The "don't deal with Collingwood" message has been trumpeted loud and clear every year for the past decade. Every year there are clubs too stupid to listen. Why we have spent two weeks going back and forth over a player they don't want is beyond me. We should have put a deadline on that deal, presumably for last Friday, and moved on when it didn't come to pass. What players like Varoce and Beams are doing is no concern of ours, so not sure why it affects our deals. The fact that we haven't moved on makes me think we'll do something stupid and give up pick 23 for Lumumba, as well as getting nothing for Clark. -
Jack Trengove re-injures his navicular (2014) - trade deal off
poita replied to Wiseblood's topic in Melbourne Demons
Clearly the foot is an issue, but it also says something for the wisdom of shopping around people with the qualities of Jack Trengove - they just don't grow on trees and this club can't afford to lose anyone so highly regarded. -
Jack Trengove re-injures his navicular (2014) - trade deal off
poita replied to Wiseblood's topic in Melbourne Demons
This whole saga pretty much sums up the club in a nutshell. Doomed to wallow in perpetual mediocrity. -
There's another a bullet we have dodged. I'd rather have brought Cheney back.
-
I can almost justify the Trengove deal IF it helps net us an A grade player. I can't see the wisdom at all in moving on Watts. He is the sort of class player that teams in the premiership window bring in eg Burgoyne, Dal Santo, etc. Sure, if we think we'll be rubbish forever, then move on Watts and anyone else with top end talent, and we'll have a team of good honest battlers. But if we expect to be playing finals in a few years, players such as Watts will be critifcal in that.
-
Yep, where does all the love come from? He mixes one or two excellent acts a week with a dozen that are utterly mediocre. He's got some ability for sure, but he's a long way from being a decent AFL footballer at present.
-
Imagine how giddy some people will be when we actually win more than 4 games in a season.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - SAM FROST
poita replied to Gipsy Danger's topic in Melbourne Demons
If the Whiley/Jaksch deal goes through as it currently stands, surely that would make Frost worth pick 60+ at best. Lumumba's value is in the 30-40 range and he has greater currency than Frost. Whiley roughly equals Frost, and Whiley is merely the steak knives in the Jaksch deal. But, I would happily pay more to package a decent midfielder into the deal (or Giles for that matter). -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JEFF GARLETT
poita replied to Demon3's topic in Melbourne Demons
Presumably we weren't looking at having a live pick at 61, so nothing lost. I'd rather have a live pre season draft pick than a fourth round national draft pick, so this is a good result. Hopefully he has sorted his issues out and gets back to the player he was a few years ago. Welcome Jeff and good luck. -
I don't understand why we are not all over this. We desperately need midfielders and here is one who was one vote off being B&F in a top 4 side. We need to stop wasting time chasing forward pockets and half back flankers, and find some players who will make a real difference.

I'm not sure why people are surprised that Hawthorn are active players this year. They lost close to a million dollars out of their salary payments last year, plus whatever Sewell was on this year. If anything they are probably in danger of not meeting their minimum spend without players like Frawley on board. Expect them to go hard again next year, particularly if they can nudge one or two experienced players out the door. I've got no doubt whatsoever that their best players could command 25% - 50% more at any other club than they would get at Hawthorn. They have done a great job at keeping their core group together and making personal sacrifices (money) for the greater good (premierships). They are everything we should be aspiring to be.

Agree. Pick 23 is massively over the odds, unless they want to package a second player or pick in the deal. -

So much for Roos being the master list builder. To date he has lost our number 1 forward and number 1 defender, and the best he might be able to do in return is Lumumba and Garlett, both unwanted by their current clubs. Perhaps he should cancel his holiday and work on bringing some established midfielders to the club. The two win season we are heading for next year will be fun to watch. -
The Greenwood to Collingwood deal will be very interesting. I firmly expect Collingwood to offer up a mid 2nd round for pick for Greenwood, at the time same they try to argue Lumumba is worth pick 23. The reality is Greenwood should be in the pick 15-20 range, Lumumba somewhere around pick 40 given that his current club doesn't want him.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JEFF GARLETT
poita replied to Demon3's topic in Melbourne Demons
There's no point in having crumbers in your forward line if there are no big blokes there to contest. Perhaps we'll actually play Dawes (and hopefully Hogan) forward of centre next year, instead of letting him run around like a headless chook. Garlett would be okay if he costs us nothing, but I certainly wouldn't be giving up anything of value for him. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BILLY STRETCH
poita replied to e25's topic in Melbourne Demons
Nice to have a small win with Stretch, but Heeney for pick 17 or whatever is a joke. The system is broken and the AFL don't care. If Heeney was going to the Bulldogs, they would have had to use pick 5 to get him. How is that fair? -
I can't believe this bloke is still on our list. I'm sure he looks wonderful in training drills when there is little or no pressure around, but his much vaunted skills disappear as soon as there is the faintest hint of pressure in a game, mainly because his decision making is so poor. I don't think he has improved one iota from the day he was drafted.
