  1. Jeremy, in a season where my 3 kids and I have been to 10 games, watched 2 wins and suffered through many many defeats, often downcast by 1/2 time, YOUR marking has been a highlight. But not only the many speccies, but the around the ground, your strong marking shows your ability. You can be a star and with a big 2013 pre season, you are a key to our MFC success. With more goalkicking efficiency, a 50 goal year is not beyond you. Thank you.
  2. Forget trades, free agents, father sons, draft picks and rookie sensations. This is what we need across ALL the current and future group: 1. muscle - again we get pushed aside too easly. Watch the crows, eagles etc and their body shapes are superior to us. 2. fitness and injuries - our curse continues. Some clubs such as the kangas and swans have 2-3 players out with injuries. We have 10-15 out, with this year up to 9 players out "for the season". 3. positive confident footy (and ENTERTAINING). Not sideways, sideways, backwards turnover footy. Its pointless. Forward quick footy is MANDATORY 4. tackling that is elite. It is crucial. Too often the opposition gets the ball "forward'> You rarely get a holding the ball decision nowadays. 5. forget the handball handball handball turnover footy. We overpossess the footy (whn we have it). Handball, run, kick is abetter style. Watch the kangas, and crows resurgence. Their style is quick and effective. No "mucking around". 6. clearances: intensity, keep your feet, work & blok for others ... we are absent at all these. We have the grunt (Jones, Mckenzie, Magner). Its not the heart but the brain at these clearances. WE get SMASHED. Neeld get it right. 7. kick ins and kick outs: GET IT RIGHT. Overall, this "event" happens between 25-40 times a match. We are rubbish at defending kick outs, or attacking from our kick ins. Neeld MUST get it right NOW. 8. break the lines running - get Strauss, Grimes, Sylvia, Bail, Blease etc. to run run run & run. I don't care if they get caught. Just run and gun. 9. Forward crumbing ... the last man was Davey back some 5 years ago. We rarely get goal from a crumbing event. opposition often score 4-5 goals to our NIL. This has to do with fwd setup but also blokes hitting the base of packs. (watch Calinan and Petrenko today get goals and setup goals from fwd crumbing ... and Milne, Thomas, Riolo, Lewis Jetta etc etc get goals from this ). We need strategy. We are absent in any real entertaining footy. The above is needed NOW.
  3. again, he is still in our top 10 players. Do not even put "trade" and "Frawley" in the same thought.
  4. Colin Sylvia again showed today how vital he is to our future. He has the skill, pace and ability to be a key to our future. DO NOT trade away one of our very few good players with real skill. His year has been good considering a ruined pre season. His last 8 weeks has seen him behind only Howe and Jones. For those with IQ's sub 50, get real. Use your players with onfield weapons. Don't trade them.
  5. Surely Stef Martin is a keeper. He is ahead of Gawn and Spencer. I would see him being a big athletic 2nd ruckman. Strengths: good athlete, composure , big frame and kicking accuracy. Weaknesses: footy brain needs developing (not a natural footballer), injury free run needed, needs to use his frame to impose himself (get his hands dirty) Would have trade value to Pies and Saints. Saints may offer up a pick trade.
  6. Jake Spencer I was at the game vs the Crows. Jacobs and Tippett won the ruck. They brought the ball down to their advantage. Spencer took ZERO marks in a competitive or pack situation. We do not look to use him around the ground. In fact he was easily pushed aside. Even spolit in marking contests by blokes 10 inches shorter (Matthew Wright) He lacks a footy brain. Raw after 5 years in the system. His hitouts were moistly to the crows mids. He has the heart of a lion BUT is not and will not be part of a successful ruck division. Neeld must make the call and to Jake, say thanks but no thanks to 2013.
  7. James Frawley has been beaten this year on numerous occasions. I see him as a fast closing defender but can struggle to contain. I would love to see "Chip" become a fast running half back and we find another key backman (aka Tommy Mcdonald and James Sellar as CHB and FB). Chip has pace and should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS look forward. Not sideways and backwards. He has caught the turnover virus. Watch 2010 and he was used as a running defender. Wake up Neeld. This is obvious. Use "Chip" as a weapon. NOT a cork in a dam wall.
  8. Jack Trengove Strengths: Marking, tackling, skills on right and left foot. Weaknesses: aerobic ability to get from one contest to run & run to another contests; kicking depth (45metres is his limit), no acceleration. He has leadership quality and is a great young man. Will need to be over any OP, and have an intense 2013 pre season. A key to our success. If he fails to flourish, we will continue to be cellar dwellars. He MUST become elite.
  9. Good player but not worth $500,000 a year. Around the $350,000 a year at best for a 15-18 possession wingman. A good miss if he signs with the Crows.
  10. I love the extreme Optomism. But cannot see Goddard and Cloke coming on board. for me: a) Trade period - Koby Stevens (WCE) traded to MFC in exchange for Cale Morton - Josh Caddy (Suns) traded to MFC in echange for Pick 13 - Trade pick #3 to Giants for Jesse Hogan (mini draft) ... so we get Viney in round 2 at #25. B) Delisted by MFC: Spencer, Petterd, Bennell, Bate, Jetta, Davis, Green (retired) c) AFL national draft (Whitfield go at pick 1, Toumpas at pick 2 and Grundy pick 3) Pick 4 Sam Mayes - highly skilled midfielder Pick 25 Jack Viney - the engine, hard inside mid Pick 45 Jake Calvert - good marking fwd at 195cms and loves a goal (shhh) Pick 66 Daniel Nicholson (rookie elevation) d) Rookies Magner (2nd yr) Couch (2nd yr) Evans (3rd yr interstate rookie) L Williams (2nd yr) Sheahan (2nd yr) Kelvin Lawrence - delisted rookie Rookie draft - #3 Luke Blackwell (Claremont) or Kyle Martin (Frankston) #21 Luke Tynan (Scorpions) or a young ruckman like Sikora from Sandringham b: Nicholson Frawley Rivers hb: Grimes T Mcdonald Strauss c: Blease Caddy Mayes hf: Sylvia Watts Howe fwd: Jurrah Clark Viney rucks: Jamar Trengove Jones int: J Mckenzie Stevens Stef Martin Tapscott (Hogan on ice until 2014) emerg: Gysberts, Dunn, Bail
  11. You would need to consider what we offer to attract players. In all honesty, we got Mitch Clark based on $$'s. We cannot offer what the the Tigers, Blues, Kangas can ... the chance to play in finals and be part of a successful program, or or the top teams hawks, Magpies etc ... who offer the ultimate Premiership hope in the next few years. Maybe we can offer a chance to play regular AFL footy. Might attract Quinten Lynch if Cloke stays at Magpie land.
  12. agree ... we need mids. I would rather have Sam Mayes & Toumpas, then Jesse Hogan and Toumpas.
  13. Have a look at WAFL R14 Mark of the Day Subiaco v East Fremantle... fyi Koby Stevens. I have seen him play and he is the type to get into our team. Physically ready. Gets the footy. Good endurance. Clearances. Tackles very well. Not the quickest jet but capable.
  14. Hey guys... maybe you could assist with the Ben Kennedy thread. Yes I agree he looks very good and would fit into our future. pace, skills, loves a goal. But don't compare a draftee to a current player or you will be shot down !! Caddy at #13 with a mature body with 2 years development. But if not Kennedy or Gartlett at #13 a good investments.
  15. For those with the hairy knuckles and enjoy bananas as their sole diet, Brent Harvey at pick 47. There was plenty on this forums saying Bate was going to be better than Pavlich, and Watts better than Riewoldt. I stayed silent but apparently the protocol is to shoot down an optomism.
  16. expect Jack Martin to go to the Suns in exchange for pick 2. Giants get #1 (Whitfield) and then pick # 2 (for Brodie Grundy). Toumpas for #3 and to the Demons. Fingers crossed.
  17. Lynden Dunn has deserved another year at least. He shows he wants the footy and the past few weeks, he has been amongst our best. Joel Macdonald has the heart of the lion, competes well and can shut down an opponent. Skills and decision making are sometimes a concern but again should be retained. Morton, Bate, Bennell, Petterd, Jetta, Spencer are all delistees before Dunn and Macdonald.
  18. I was skeptical when we drafted him... this was vindicated early. But Sellar has shown at Full Back that he can shut down big power forwards, and has good skills. The occasional fwd move or ruck relief is a bonus when we are short on manpower. Hopefully this gives Frawley more freedom to be a rebounder as a backman. So far, a good move for draft #54.
  19. #3 Jimmy Toumpas ... lock him in #4 Mayes / Wines #13 Gartlett / Kennedy #25 Jack Viney
  20. Spot on. If he was 5 years younger, definitely. He need his type, but not Lenny Hayes as such.
  21. Yes yes and yes. Showed plenty in the last few weeks. Would be grabbed by 17 other teams if we delisted.
  22. IQ of a sub-primate. Again stating the obvious and nothing concrete "once again" here. Name names if you dare. Put yourself on the line. This post adds NIL value. "We need mids who can win a ball and play both ways". Oh, and we need forwards who will mark the ball and kick goals. Oh , and ruckman that will tap the ball down to their teams advantage. Oh, and backs that defend and rebound the ball outsude 50. Get over yourself.
  23. saw Travis Colyer running a round for the Bendigo team today. Small forward ?? not sure (behind Jetta and Alwyn Davey at EFC) also heard Demons interested in midfielder from the Crows ... Chris Knights. Would be welcome.
  24. MFC 2000 Pick 16 Scott Thompson (went home to S.A) ... was a class act and ashame he went home. MFC 2001 Pick 9 Luke Molan ... we went with the biggest & toughest under 18 footballers (injury cruelled him) MFC 2002 Pick 14 & 15 Daniel Bell and Nicholas Smith MFC 2003 Pick 3 Sylvia Pick 5 B McLean ... two very very good u18's performers tough and hard MFC 2004 Pick 13 Matthew Bate Pick 15 Lynden Dunn (Pick 15 was from Crows for Thompson) ... I had Matt Rosa in my top 10, and Brent Prismall is top 20. Was amazed both were passed up by the dees. MFC 2005 Pick 12 Nathan Jones ... was a great get. MFC 2006 Pick 12 James Frawley ... it was betweem Jack Riewoldt and Frawley for this pick. All good. Petterd at 30 and Garland at 46 were ok, albeit I thought Colwas going to be a fwd. MFC 2007 Pick 4 Cale Morton Pick 14 Jack Grimes 21 Addam Maric Morton lacked work ethic in under age footy (nothing changed)- I had Brad Ebert or Rhys Palmer at pick 4, Grimes was a great catch (when he fell outside the top 10). Maric was lazy in under 18's and big mistake MFC 2008 Pick 1 Jack Watts 17 Sam Blease 19 James Strauss ... we really wanted Ryan Scoenmakers. Got lucky with Blease who has rated 8-12 in this year. Strauss was rated 25-40. Not a great choice. Does the Dan Hannebery ring a bell. I had him at 12-15 so again thought we struggled. MFC 2009 Pick 1 Scully Pick 2 Trengove Pick 11 Gysberts Pick 18 Tapscott Ryan Bastinac at pick 11 was a lock-in. (?? Gysberts ... rated 20-25 region) MFC 2010 Pick 12 Lucas Cook ... sorry I had Shaun Atley at pick 5-8. Still in shock that we missed him . Prendergast lost me here. Keiran Harper, Ben Jacobs, Jack Darling and Lewis Jetta were better by a mile than Cook. I had Cook at mid 20's at best. MFC 2011 Pick 11 Traded for Mitch Clark. Good move. I had us looking at Devon Smith , Clay Smith or Taylor Adams. Looking fwd... 2012 draft ... 3# Toumpas ... pace, smart, leadership #4 Wines (skills, tough, Hayes like) or Mayes (elite skills) #13 O'Rourke (attracts the footy, Beams like without tatts) ,Kennedy (think aleft footed boomer harvey but better) or Gartlett (Cyril Riloi like) #25 Viney (tough, inside mid, loves MFC) OR 2012 draft (if GWS/Suns nominate Viney) #3 Viney #4 Toumpas #13 O'Rourke, Kennedy or Gartlett #25 Pongracic (tough tough tough midfielder)
  25. Here is a phantom draft from Big Footy. Good reading IMO. I think GWS will swap Jack Martin to Suns for pick 2, so Whitfield #1 and Grundy #2 to GWS. Stringer in my opinion will go between #9-12 pick. He has huge potential. Just wish he didn't have the broken leg and we got to see his best in this years under 18s champs. 1st Round 1. Greater Western Sydney - Brodie Grundy (Ruck) Height: 202cm Weight: 100kg Club: Sturt Range: 1-6 Description: Grundy would be one of the best ruckman available in quite some time. He is probably the only true rival to Whitfield for that no.1 selection especially with Sheedy's comments about talls. Excellent tap ruckman who can really bring his midfielders into the game. Already has a big body and with his mobility and ability below his knees I think he will be able to come in and play as a 2nd ruck from day one. Could probably be the no.1 ruck on ability but he'd just get banged up. Reasonable contested mark, good tank on him already and his kicking skills are improving very quickly. 2. Gold Coast - Lachlan Whitfield (Midfielder) Height: 184cm Weight: 74kg Club: Dandenong Stingrays Range: 1-2 Description: Whitfield is the best junior in this years crop on current performances. To go along with his elite skills he has the endurance to just go and go all day at good speed. I have a feeling I read he clocked a 17 in the beep test which is incredible for a 17/18 year old. At this stage is more an outside midfielder who can go forward and kick goals which in modern footy is a more than handy attribute with the sub rule. With the Giants' array of inside mids Whitfield will be the outside class that they need to add to complete their midfield. 3. Melbourne - Jimmy Toumpas (Midfielder) Height: 183 Weight: 74 Club: Woodville West Torrens Range: 2-5 Description: Toumpas is a very highly skilled midfielder from SA.He's a player that a coach can throw anywhere on the field and he can perform. Has already been performing to a very high level at SANFL senior level as a 16 year old including a premiership with WWT. Like Whitfield is probably more of an outside type but has the ability to win a clearance and just burst out of a pack and be very damaging with his ball use once in the clear. Suns probably need inside mids Toumpas will be too hard to pass over and I believe ina few years will have no issue playing more inside. 4. Melbourne (compensation pick) - Sam Mayes (Midfielder/Forward) Height: 187cm Weight: 78kg Club: North Adelaide Range: 4-12 Description: I may be alone here but IMO Mayes will become the best player in this draft. Absolutely love the way he goes about his footy. He has one of, if not the very best kick in this draft pool. Top notch kick. Has a lot of versatility with his development beginning as a lead-up forward where he dominated at champs last year. This year has turned into a more full-time midfielder. Has copped some heavy defensive attention this year so is very highly rated. Last year playing forward he had the ability to get great separation from his defender and whilst I haven't really seen him use this burst as a midfielder as much he always seems to have an eternity. I think he compares pretty favorably to Pendlebury in this regard. 5. Western Bulldogs - Troy Menzel (Midfielder/Forward) Height: 186cm Weight: 77kg Club: Central Districts Range: 5-20 Description: If Menzel can stay fit he will probably be one of the most damaging players in the draft. Managed to kick 15 goals in 2 Champs games before succumbing to injury. Has had the LARS surgery but that was some 2 years ago. While I’ve currently got him going quite late I’m sure someone will take the punt on him early. Will probably go between 10-15 at least. Troy is a highly skilled medium forward/midfielder. He’s a great size and elite kick of the footy. As a forward he is more than capable of getting his goals from being a lead and mark player or as a crumber similar to a Stevie J. When fit is a pretty good athlete which should hold him in good stead at Draft Camp and boost his draft prospects. 6. Western Bulldogs (compensation pick) - Dayle Garlett (Midfielder/Forward) Height: 180cm Weight: 75kg Club: Swan Districts Range: 4-15 Description:Garlett is the most interesting player come draft night for mine. Will he go top 5-10 like his talent deserves or will he slide out of the first round due to his 'attitude problems.' By all accounts he still has a fair way to go to rid himself of the perception he has created but he has gone a long way to doing so. Another highly skilled outside mid going early but he has genuine line-breaking ability with his pace and deadly accurate kicking skills. He also has the ability to win his own ball but his forte will be as a goal-kicking outside midfielder. 7. Port Adelaide - Ben Kennedy (Midfielder/Forward) Height: 174cm Weight: 76kg Club: Glenelg Range: 6-25 Description: Kennedy is a lightning quick midfielder/small forward. Is very much capable of doing both to a very high level. Can rack up a huge number of possession through the midfield or kick bags of goals in the forward line. If he was bigger would be a certain top 10 IMO and is still a chance to go there. By all accounts was very close to being selected by Adelaide with the mini-draft pick last year so that gives an idea of where he is at. One thing I really like about him for a guy who has the assets he does is he has a touch of arrogance. (Maybe more than a touch) Just has that I’m going to be able to burn you off look in his eyes when he sizes his opponent up. 8. Brisbane - Lachlan Plowman (Defender/Midfielder) Height: 191cm Weight: 86kg Club: Calder Cannons Range: 4-13 Description: Plowman is a very good rebounding KPD whom the VM coach has said was sorely missed during the Champs (can't have been missed too much seems they won it ). I have him this high because a few Melbourne fans have said they believe they will take him. Just a hunch but I think his career may pan out similar to a Mundy. First few years as a rebounding HBF but then move into a midfield role. 9. Richmond - Josh Simpson (Forward/Midfielder) Height: 183cm Weight: 72kg Club: East Fremantle Range: 7-25 Description: Simpson broke his collarbone I believe earlier in the year so had a slow start and showed a few signs in the Championships. Plays midfield and forward and will probably start his career as a forward before developing into a midfielder. He still has a bit of filling out to do to be ready for AFL but he has some really great skills both football wise and athletically. Has a huge leap on him to go with some very good pace. Think long term he will develop into a Daniel Wells type. 10. Fremantle - Mason Shaw (KPF/Ruck) Height: 198cm Weight: 92kg Club: South Fremantle Range: 8-16 Description: It's a shame about the broken jaw that Shaw received earlier in the year. Kicked 8 in his return game but he hasn't really got going yet outside of that. Not completely sold on Shaw as a high pick but he's a great size at 198cm and can play as a 2nd ruck as well as FF. He's more of a stay at home forward rather that a guy who will roam up the field which is fine because he is a very good contested mark and looks like he could fill out to be a monster like Tippett. Kicked 7 in last years Grand Final so that should hold him in good stead come draft night. 11. St.Kilda - Jake Stringer (Midfielder/Forward) Height: 191cm Weight: 91kg Club: Bendigo Pioneers Range: 5-20 Description: Stringer could be the bargain of the draft or he may never get over his injury. He’s being looked at as a mid-late first rounder and with the Cats interest in him with a mini-draft pick they will be over the moon if he could last until their pick. Stringer is just a man mountain in under 18’s. I have a few question marks over his foot skills (I’ll admit I hadn’t seen him pre-broken leg so that could be the reason) and whether or not he dominates midfield because he’s just that much bigger. Having said that he’s not an awful kick and he does crack in hard so that should translate to being a dominate AFL clearance player too. I think if you are drafting him it’s as a midfielder who rests forward rather than a forward who pinch hits. 12. North Melbourne - Jonathon O'Rourke (Midfielder) Height: 183cm Weight: 75kg Club: Calder Cannons Range: 8-18 Description: O'Rourke is a skillful inside/outside mid who could possibly rise into top 10 calculations by seasons end. After an injury riddled 2011 he has remained injury free this year. Not an overly big player physically but is quite an accomplished player on the inside. Always seems to have time to pick the right option and hit his target. Fantastic composure. Is also a very good athlete with good mix of endurance and speed. Will probably play a season or two as an outside mid before moving into the guts. 13. Melbourne (compensation pick) - Oliver Wines (Midfielder) Height: 185cm Weight: 83kg Club: Bendigo Pioneers Range: 5-20 Description: Wines would challenge Viney for the title of best inside midfielder in this draft. He's a fair bit bigger than Viney and isn't afraid to crash in with his big frame. Has pretty good endurance so can run all day but isn't overly quick. He's a decent kick without being anything special and at Champs it would have been nice to see him convert a bit more of his oportunities in front of goal.He could be a viable option for GC if they really want a pure ball winner but I think they'll just go best available and pick inside mids later. 14. Carlton - Nick Vlastuin (Midfielder) Height: 187cm Weight: 83kg Club: Northern Knights Range: 5-20 Description: Vlastuin is a real hard nut inside midfielder. Someone who a GC, Richmond, Carlton would love to have. Wasn’t hugely productive in the Champs but was playing a new role off a HBF. For a big bodied inside mid he has some pretty neat kicking skills. The downside to him would be that he isn’t the most athletically gifted player going around in that he isn’t very quick, he doesn’t have a big leap and he’s already very physically developed. However, he is already a pretty high level player and has the added bonus of good leadership quality as well. 15. Sydney - Kristian Jaksch (KPF/KPD) Height: 194cm Weight: 85kg Club: Oakleigh Chargers Range: 8-30 Description: I think Jaksch will turn out to be the best of this years KPF. Not sure he is worthy of a top 10 pick at this stage but I think a team will snatch him up quite early. Is a pretty solid KPD but it's his work as a KPF that will push him up to being a pick in the top 15-20. Is a very good contested mark and I believe he is a guy you could build an attack around long term. Has very good skills for a big man and believe he will turn into a big, strong FF/CHF like a Hurley type.
