  1. Solid post and agree with most of that BZ. Except the last part....partially. Why do i say partially? The game style can and does work for parts of a match/season when you have most of your best 26 to 28 on the list fit and firing on all cylinders. Unfortuantely, as you have expressed very succinctly, playing that particular style for most of a match/matches/season oft leads to extensive fatigue/injuries and an eating into the depth of one's list. Which then impacts on the ability and success of the team / club as a whole to maintain a winning run of games/seasons in the medium to long term. Especially when the fatigue/injuries see you tapping into players post your best 28 (ish). Unfortunately once you delve beyond your best 28 or so, as a minnow AFL club (ie; not an AFL favoured top 4 Vic, interstate or start up), you then drop away significantly from your best and your ability to produce a level of intensity in a chaos game that will get the chocolates other than against very ordinary bottom feeders (who are also struggling badly). Among other fixes in the next few pre-seasons/trades/drafts, Goody needs to recognise the above and adjust accordingly, injecting a slower possession tempo option into the mix for significant parts of a game more often if we are to become a serious (regular) finals contender and take a shot at a flag or two. My eye is on this for 2020. Start seeing it and it will be clear that Goody is on the money. Then we just need the cattle / success at the draft/trade table. Much of that depends on an AFL system (fixed) though. And we are not GWS, GC, the Hawks or the Pies etc so i wont be holding my breath on succeeding on this part. At this point we remain one of the bottom feeders in the eyes of Gill and likely to continue receiving the chaff instead of the wheat.
  2. Thank LN. I believe second effort tackles that don't quite stick, and the like, are caught in the 'pressure acts' stat by Champion. Clarry has this well covered in all aspects. I have purposely watched for these 2nd effort acts and follow ups and there are very few in the league that match Clarry's ability to win or at worst neutralise a loose ground ball contest. This bloke is in a different league and has been for 2 solid seasons now. Dermy is way off on Clarry, aside from his disposal coming inside 50 (among others) he is not far away from 'Champion' territory. As i've said previously this season, Clarry, Big M and to a lessor extent Harmes and Salem are the type you can build a premiership team around. Viney at his best (with major clean up of disposal by foot) along with a few others starting to find their feet such as Tracc, May, Frosty, Hore and Melksham. In theory Gus should be in the group with Harmes and Salem IMO but this year has just seen a massive fall from his 2018 2nd half. His confidence and ability to just gather a loose ground ball with one touch (or even a few) seems to have deserted him. When that happens you no longer have that little bit of extra time and space you did previously which must put your whole game under extra pressure at the highest level. In some ways this is where a very good coach comes in. Form management (see belief/confidence in self/game) is a key component of man management. A short well constructed and managed stint at Casey overseen by performance or line coach with specific goals to work on may have been just the tonic for Gus earlier in the season when it was clear he was on a downward form spiral. Maybe he came in to the season carrying an issue LN? Maybe he's been getting some closer checking from the opp this season also? Was it the return of Viney to the middle and him getting pushed out again similar to first part of 2018 and he just doesn't have the silk/burst speed to impact as well (offensively/defensively on quicker opponent)? Interesting times with Gus. Let's hope he/we can turn it around in 2020. Maybe more time in the middle is needed. We seemed to win more often when he played more time through there in 2018. Unfortunately not so well this season given this year's ordinary disposal.
  3. Nah. I usually respect a fair amount of what the Derm brings but IMHO he is off on this as far as Clarry is concerned. Clarry is our number 1 tackler so far this season (tackle average 6.31) and No.1 last year (6.77). Ranked No.1 for us in pressure acts averages (24). Ranked in the top 10 in the AFL this season for tackle averages (10th overall) and 13th in pressure acts!!! If he has issues in this area then i'm Uncle Bitter's uncle! Inside 50 Clarry is ranked 9th (1.19) and ranked 4th overall last year (1.09). Pretty good results given the amount of ground this bloke covers and the amount of contests he impacts. To put that in some perspective Tracc has spent a stack more time inside 50 and his results from 2019? ..... ranked 8th (1.25) and 2018? .... 21st! (0.48). Ok, Gus sitting @ 10th (3.44) has dropped off a little, having finished 6th for us in 2018 (4.68). Ranked 153rd in the AFL. Maybe an under done tank this season and/or lack of leg speed (bit of both)....just can't quite get to opponents often enough to lay a bloody tackle. So yes, plenty of room for improvement and Derm might have this one correct but did Gus come into 2019 with any niggles? Can't recall someone might remind me? Dunkley presently our 2nd best for tackle averages inside 50 (2.00), albeit off a small sample. Just behind Jeffy at No.1 (2.29)! Jeffy is No.1 in the AFL also this season and Dunkley No.4! Doubt he'll be dropped this week just on that strength alone ? As an aside Tim Smith sits at 14th in the AFL and 3rd for us (1.67), more than likely part of the reason the coach & FD will be bringing him back this week aside from the fact we presently don't have a genuine key tall forward running around.
  4. Will need a major re-vamp clean out / injection (whatever you wish to call it) of our forward list if that is to improve significantly from here and enough to see us become a serious 'regular' finals contender IMO TU.
  5. After watching Billy pretty carefully in some of his games DP i've found he isn't willing to pull the trigger much, tends to take the easy lateral or backward short options on disposal and pretty ordinary in front of the sticks when he gets the opp also. In addition he is yet another poor exponent of overhead/contested marking IMO and we already have enough of those. Rarely if ever marks inside 50 also although maybe he doesn't go inside all that often. I would be surprised if that is the case though. A non-impact but clean (low risk) player who refuses to take the game on and utilise the bit of speed he has. Works hard to get into space for the easy receive with the leg work but that's about where it ends for mine. If we are to improve as a club and get anywhere near silverware in our life times i really don't think there's a place for the likes of a B.S. other than as a depth option who mostly playes (quite well) for Casey with the occasional call up when our stocks are very low.
  6. My best guess is you are referring to the injury conundrum BZ.
  7. All good DZ. Wish the kick rating was publicly available. One of very few reasonable stats going around IMO.
  8. Player / Team Stats Form Guide To Rnd 17, 2019 vs Season 2018 All that Red! Frostmeister, Hunt, Harmes, Salem & Big M the lone beacons in a season to forget! Maxy i'm including in there as if we were to add a "hit outs to advantage"factor i would estimate his score about 20% higher than his present score (or more), places him in about 3rd position on this scale overall.
  9. DE% is a very poor/loose indicator vs kick rating and would take the kick rating anytime but the average team DE% sits around 73% over recent seasons (last time i looked). Maybe his handballs are a fair way above average as they are included in that stat but yes....would also like to see the last month's kick ratings vs his average 2019 rating. This is his average DE% in the 3 matches to Rnd 16 vs his entire 2019 average anyway. Is 5% a reasonable improvement on this? He is close to the AFL average in this period but again that might contain a significant improvement in handball (bias) vs kicking or maybe it is kicking. Who knows!? One of the big (many) weaknesses of using / looking at DE% i guess but there it is.
  10. On averages vs last year and vs his peers, Melk hasn't done too badly. Only off approx 7% vs his 2018 averages. Lets face it guys.... with 16 players more than 10% down on their 2018 average output, including Garlett who is off approx 28%, it's no wonder we aren't connecting. Only a handfull of players have improved on their 2018 averages statistically.
  11. Fair enough Chook. I wonder why some of our players tend to panic so often and don't have the poise to just go back and take their shot or steady when the game is in the balance up the field and hit a target. It's not like we had anything to play for (lose) either. If we can't do these things in regular H&A there's slim chance of the regular offenders ever doing so in a big one, when there's something on the line. If we aren't going to teach by setting standards and coaching it out of them now.... then when?
  12. I doubt Fritschkreig for Tyson would've seen us improve by over 10 goals Chook. Fritter is also down 14% from his 2018 season average output so far this year. Not tracking well (among others!). A managed stint with some focused constructive coaching for two to three weeks might be just the tonic before a recall.
  13. Dunkley might need a spell but only his second game....needs at least one more before a "managed" spell provided he isn't overly sore. JKH /Jordan couldn't be any worse than ANB .....Jordan worth a look for one or two matches? Agree re Hannan & ANB. But need to add Fristchkrieg into this. So for mine it's.... Out: Hannan - physically Gawn/spent...put him in cotton wool till the 2020 pre-season before he does a major hammy etc ANB - great running / work rate and gets into good places....but a complete ball destroyer who has shown no sign of improving here season after season. Depth at best or delist. Fritschkreig - Endeavour and effort is solid BUT.... his decision making and willingness to hand ball to anywhere when about to be tackled or being tackled is just too costly. Catches us out far too often on the counter with players out of position and all heading Nth, all of a sudden the ball's sailing over their heads and back to goals for the easy sling shot. This isn't a one off and is happening match after match. His decision to play on today late and kick around the corner (for the miss) when he could have gone back and eaten up the clock was unforgivable and the sort of stuff a coach only dreams of in a nightmare. Imagine that in a major prelim or GF with the match on the line. Shizen. Go back and tidy things up, especially decision making / hand ball options, before returning please. In: Jordan, CWags & Baker. I know Goody and the FD won't have the gonads to manage/improve Fritsch at Casey. However, that's my take and sending him there would also set a good example for all that some things just aren't acceptable, even if the rest of your game was ok/reasonable.
  14. This is on the Club BB. It needs to get serious. Compile a series of incidents such as this one, as well as all the holds, over the shoulders etc and take it to the AFL for a "please explain!??" Why Max is being unfairly targeted/penalised for so called "straight arm block" such as this (which was a pretty feeble extended arm & hardly a straight one anyway!) but on the flip side the frees that are clearly there "for" are mostly being ignored. He is so dominant in most matches i get the feeling the umps are actively (among some of them) umpiring his impact out of the match to the favour of the opp in order to even out matches he is involved in. It's now on the FD & Club to grow a pair and officially raise it with the AFL. We also need to raise the incident by whoever the umpire was today (Dalgleish?) who, in response to a "no prior" call from one of our boys to another who copped a holding the ball decision, said ... "it doesn't matter". Since when do the rules of the game "not matter"?? Only when it's us on the receiving end maybe for this ump??
  15. 6. Viney 5. Frostmeister 4. Big M 3. Harmes 2. May 1. Salem HMs - Petty. Worked super hard to maintain front position and it payed off. Hunt & Tracc pretty good also at times in this regard but let themselves down on other occasions. Tracc's miss at the end costly. Fritsch's missed handball and insane decision to play on towards the end of the match after marking and kicking around the corner. Instead of going back, eating up the full clock, then taking a shot, if he misses regardless he allows defenders to rest and re-set out back....both were coach/team killers at crucial stages of a match. Needs a spell at Casey with some severe constructive one on one coaching that gets this rubbish (among other poor aspects / decision making) out of his game before his next stint at senior level.
  16. Player / Team Stats - Weighted Composite Score Rnd 17, 2019 - Dogs vs Demons (Marvel) # Hit outs to advantage not accounted for Our 2nd worst team score for the season with the only match bettering this one, Rnd 6 vs the Tigers. Jetta coming in severely under done. Hannan completely out of form and more than likely a match fitness / zero tank issue, in serious need of a spell at Casey. Clarry's 2nd lowest score for the season also. His lowest against the Giants in Rnd 10. Usually easily in the top 3 to 5 every week however so no shame in having the off week, especially for such a young fella in a bog ordinary season. Will bounce back next week no doubt. Scores from the top 6 and bottom 6 (in particular) both pretty abysmal also. On a positive note this was Viney's best result / output for the season by a fair way, his previous best score 4.200 against the Saints in Rnd 5. It was also his first time at the No.1 ranking for the season.
  17. Certainly did well for the tackle but that kick from Gus sums up our whole year. Half good..half shizenhouzen. So many NQRs we are carrying (for whatever reason) week after week. Pressure has been better the last three weeks from some but too many give it up far too easily and we get burnt on the rebound. Cant string more than one win together through a series of injuries, poor form, a lack of class/finish and horrid game style/forward quality including forward method & personel. Maybe next year! Where have i heard that before. Nearly five decades of saying that now sadly.
  18. Why is Fritsch going up with May sitting there for the potential grab??? Stay down and [censored] crumb the ball instead of flying for the hero mark!
  19. Some of our players just dont think. No need to kick that Gawn just shimey and take it OOB like 99% of players would do. May have cost us any chance of winning the match right there
  20. ANB so often gets into the right place but rarely finishes off hard work.
  21. Goody seems to have shown a bias towards a "play on and kick down the line" method IMO Dimmy. Thats ok if you have regular marking beasts that can take advantage and/or you are usually winning the clearance from related stoppages. At this point we arent doing the former much at all and the latter is only about even vs the opp. The outlet kick to a pocket is 'usually' a much better option. Even if you can't link up you are at least an extra 20 meters further away from the opp's goals down the line.
  22. They threw everything at us in that quarter. 80% time in their forward half and only managed to extend the lead by 5 points. If we avoid the normal Goody chaos game and can play some decent possession footy (less turnovers) we are in with a slim chance.
