I’m hoping to get down there with my son when they resume training next year… but QANTAS are making it hard with their changes to the frequent flyer program. Even looking ahead to January or February next year, if we want to use classic rewards points, the only flights from Sydney to Melbourne require us to go via either Adelaide or Launceston!! This ends up costing us 50% more in points. Grrrrrrrrrr!!

Social Media has been a godsend, but at the same time, it’s been one of the worst things to happen to society, in living memory (and for me, that’s a very loooong time). I love that I’ve been able to reestablish friendships that had been lost for decades, I love that I have a platform on which I can promote my band and share my music and photography etc, and I love that I’ve been able to build a great network of newly established friendships, particularly in the music arena (did I mention that I have a couple of my band’s t-shirt designs that I’m selling?🤣) That’s all great, however, there is also so much to dislike about social media. I dislike that it has given a platform to all manner of hate groups, empowering and emboldening them. Due to the fact that there is little done in the way of regulation (how do you effectively regulate a global platform?), all manner of conspiracy theorists, racists, homophobes, and every other lunatic with an axe to grind, now have a place not only to gather ‘virtually’, but to then organise and ‘take it to the streets’. Facebook and even Instagram do this to a degree, but X (and previously, Twitter) is a playground for them, with seeming impunity. I also dislike the ‘look at me’ attitude that seems to have been taken to new levels with the advent of the ‘new’ social media like Tik Tok. It’s become a [censored] vanity parade, but that’s just my personal take and why I dislike it. in terms of what this topic was started for, I don’t think that social media sites, and particularly Tik Tok, have much bearing on club membership numbers. I would hazard a guess that while some individual players may have large followings, the majority of Tik Tok users are not going to part with their hard earned (or pocket money - is that still a thing?) on memberships and club paraphernalia. Other than a relative handful of popular Tik Tok personalities, popularity is a very fleeting thing on such platforms… it’s just consumerism based on whatever is trending on any given day. Facebook has become a wasteland, for the most part deserted by the younger generation and populated by us wrinklies (thanks 3DB), so any promotion there, is just preaching to the converted (and attracts the usual attention seeking keyboard warriors), and Instagram is not, for the most part, a platform that people visit for information or sales pitches… it’s mostly for sharing photographs, short videos and memes memes memes (oh how I hate memes). The best promotion for our, and any other club for that matter, is to perform on the field.

Saw him a few times with the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and he had the voice (almost identical to Bon) and the attitude and swagger (and a Scotsman to boot). One of the best front men I’ve ever seen.

Please don’t say it’s a song featuring Brian Johnson. I know I’ve probably mentioned this before, so at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I walked out on a free Canberra Day concert in the early 1970’s feeling ripped off, mid way through a performance by the band Geordie, of which he was the frontman (I won’t do him the honour of referring to him as their singer 😉). For mine, the only person who should ever have been considered as Bon’s replacement, was Alex Harvey!! (sadly, he too passed just a year after Bon).

To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed by that ‘highlights’ reel… I think if he was given responsibility for editing it, he’d probably cut out at least three occasions where, but for the oppositions poor finishing, he would have conceded three goals; the ordinary spoil right at the beginning of the reel that was collected by his direct opponent who proceeded to kick it into the post, a handball in tight under pressure (admittedly) that was intercepted on the forward flank and passed to an oppo player in the forward pocket and finally, a kick out that was easily intercepted by an opponent who proceeded to kick a behind. Apart from those efforts, I thought his kicking was good when he was in the clear, so I suppose he reads the play well enough to give his team mates a target, but a couple of his kicks did only end up with team mates because they marked well under pressure, not because he placed the kick perfectly for them. Sorry, but I couldn’t get excited about him. I’m still thinking we’ll probably take Allan, but if Tauru does slip back down the order as clubs get cold feet, I’d be more than happy for us to take a chance on him (I’m not sure we’d take him at 5).

Yes, the logo! I am wondering if Sofia will be continuing as herself, or is she likely to emerge in the role of an actual Batman super villain such as Catwoman (was she a villain?) or as the Joker’s ‘partner’ (name slips my mind). I like to think that Victor will reappear. I watched For All Mankind… first two seasons were fantastic, but I thought it flounders a bit in seasons 3&4. Wondering what to watch next… maybe Dark Matter.

I imagine they will have gone through all possible scenarios and permutations of which players they would have to decide between at pick 5 (eg. if Langford, Tauru and Smith were all available, which would they take), and possibly the same at pick 9, but that will depend heavily on who is taken at 5 (eg, if Smith, then Allen…if Langford, then Reid or best small mid available).

Some comments on here really leave me scratching my head. Based on a ‘highlights’ reel, some will say he’s the bee’s knees and others talk of his disposal being sub par. How is it that there is such a vast difference in how people see the footage? I know they don’t always work out (Weid, Toumpas, Sc..Sc..Sc..Sc..Sc..Scully, etc), but these players get the ranking they are given by the pundits, based on a bit more than just a two or three minute long highlights reel. And the pundits seem to all be in agreement on the top five (not that I’ve followed them too closely). I’m going to be content with whoever we take at pick 6(5) as I have faith in Taylor and the coaching team’s judgement…coupled with the fact that this is such an even draft when it comes to picks one to, possibly, fifteen.

Couldn’t agree more! I think it has left open the chance of the return of a character who appears to have been killed, and the very final shot provides a strong clue as to what will unfold in season two! It is a brilliant series! I also watched the entire three seasons of Ted Lasso over 3 days, and I have to say that, along with Slow Horses, that has to be one of the best scripted and acted series that I’ve seen to date. To maintain the level of consistency that they do, over three seasons, is nothing short of miraculous.

I’d be happy for us to get Tauru and then go for the best mid available at pick 11 (our pick 9).

I don’t think I’ll be complaining regardless of who ends up being our pick 5(6) pick up… Smith, Langford, Draper, Tauru; I’d be happy with any of them.
