Mark Basics [edit: resurrected from 2013]
Adam The God replied to Straight Sets Simon's topic in Melbourne Demons
Matt Jones is one of the biggest offenders, IMO. What he'll do though is run back quite quickly, but he'll be facing the wrong way. By the time he's turned around, the opposition have set up. It's dumb football and it's really something that is drilled into footballers from a very early age. Never run with your back to the play. -
Bergman is genius and Polanski's done some beautiful work. Don't rate Fellini though. Prefer Bunuel. It's more the DIYness of those hands in the wall. I went to Deakin, then did a couple of years as a production assistant, now I produce my own films - mostly docs. Had no idea about the bluescreenness of TSOM. One of my favourites as a child. I would watch it religiously. Some of the greats have been fans. Tarantino, Truffaut etc. You don't have to attend film school to know anything. Watching heaps of movies is education enough. They'll be those around the traps that can help with the technical aspects.

Ah, that's a bugger. Totally get you though. I probably won't be going along to much at MIFF, unless I get free tickets. It's a short film I produced earlier in the year. Quite female skewed, I suspect. I'll be interested to see how it goes. Yeah, I guess for the '60s it's okay, but I always had a problem with the groping hands. It reminded me of being in film school again. Shall certainly let you know about that drink. I haven't even looked at which hotel they've booked us into yet. My old man lived in Sydney for a few years in the early 2000s. Haven't been back since, so I'm intrigued and vaguely looking forward to it.

And I've been holding off on Fargo to see whether it got renewed or not before I try and invest myself in it. I don't want another Rubicon situation. I might chance it given your strong praise, DA. I'd heard negative vibes, but glad to hear that might not necessarily be the case.

Is anyone up with The Fall? Not sure of it's been discussed, but wonderfully plotted, beautifully shot and well acted. Gillian Anderson is the lead. The second series comes out later this year. Then, I presume everyone is up to date with Hannibal, True Detective, Mad Men and Game of Thrones? All amazing.

I've been meaning to see Images, but have been busy with Hannibal (s2), True Detective (s1), Mad Men (s7) and Game of Thrones (s4). I have a film playing at Sydney Film Fest, so the director and I get awesomely flown up there and put up in a hotel (for three days - fly back in time for the Melbourne v Essendon game ), so I'm planning on checking out the Altman retrospective while I'm up there. I take it you'll be going to something, HT? I never really got Repulsion. The story is fine enough I guess, but I just thought it was really clumsily and cheaply executed. The special effects are amateurish and I even remember a couple of out of focus shots. I much prefer Knife In The Water. That's wonderful.

Nice. How did the short go? I never saw The Raid, but they've released the sequel now, haven't they?
-
Exactly. The school has nothing to do with talent or application of the individual. A lot of the private school footballers are on scholarships anyway and want to make it at AFL level.

The official I love Dom Tyson thread

Interesting. I'd heard (but not seen) that Tyson picked up the three votes in the Herald Sun. Can anyone confirm or deny this? If true, pretty good effort in a losing side. -

Yeah, you can see Edmund using this now to rub his hands of all responsibility. I think he made it up too, but even if he didn't, he should take some responsibility. It would an argument he mounted, 'backed' by his 'un-named recruiter'. He's never going to take responsibility and admit that he was wrong. -
The last great film I saw was Altman's 3 Women. I'd highly recommend it if you like weird, but psychologically complex narratives.
-
I've been meaning to. I was in Berlin for the European Film Market in 2013 and Screen Australia had it up everywhere. Really glad it did well critically. I'm not sure its distribution strategy was that tops though. I take it you've seen it, D?
-
I know you're being facetious, but why would you want to merge? We are the Melbourne Demons.
-
Given he trained with us for a bit, I would hope Roosy and the boys got a bit of a look at him. If we go with him, we go with him, but I think we're well positioned to get a feeling for him.
-
I read this somewhere else on DL the other day, but I no longer care about draft position, because I have faith in our recruiting team that they'll get our early picks right.

Where's Freak when you need him?

The beauty is, he has a great foil in Nathan Jones. Who do you tag? Jones or Tyson? You can't tag both. Very excited by our young brigade, but Tyson just oozes class. -

That's it. He's a dingbat. -

It's exciting really, isn't it? If Tyson, Viney, Salem and JKH keep improving, the thought of Trengove and Toumpas playing under Roos has me salivating TBH. Add Jones and Vince for the next fourish years and Cross in the short term and you have a very exciting group. I hope Roos signs long term. Fingers crossed. -

Well, they're very different players, IMO. I think the Watson comparison is apt though. Both lack leg speed, but just keep finding the footy. Black is the other apt comparison. He really is a fantastic compliment to Viney and Jones. You've also got a bloke like Cross who can go into the middle for patches too. It's actually a very tough midfield. It's very Sydneyesque. After another pre season, you'll see more gut running from these boys and that's when we should be expecting 8 to 10 wins. -
I'd be going KPF on our first pick and mid on our second pick (wherever the latter falls).
-
That could be a Port Adelaide 2013 situation. Just getting some of these guys on the park and getting full pre seasons under their belts. Throw in a fit Hogan and Dawes, a top new KPF from the draft, another top mid from the draft and hopefully Chip re-signing, and all of a sudden we can build some momentum.
-
You can spell it either way, but the original spelling is always better - ie. the British spelling. So "judgement".
-
I agree, goodoil. I think if we were to get a mid with 2 or 3 years under their belt with pace and elite kicking, we'd be stupid not to think about trading a first round pick. I think Roos has shown us he's quite happy to trade first round picks. However, I think it might sway things towards a KPF, if we don't get Dawes or Hogan back for at least half the season and Clark retires. This being the case, we'd then really have to invest a pick at the pointy end on a KPF. That's where the KPF stars are found. We've said it many times before, but I think given George Stone and Roos, we can be confident that we might be able to develop some mids that aren't necessarily first rounders. Say your Sewell's, Mitchell's, even Cross's. Compliment Vince, Jones, Tyson and Viney with an A grader and all of a sudden that midfield isn't third world anymore.
-
I know this is extremely early and I apologise if this has been mentioned, but I'd like to pose you all a question. Given our bad luck with KPFs, if you were Jason Taylor, would you go for a KPF or a midfielder or would you look to trade our first round pick, ala Dom Tyson?
