Ahhh the joy of having all the games being played at the same time. The Premier League do it for the last round and I think it is a great way to build excitement. I was behind the northern goals with my brother and dear departed mother. When we won we all started leaping around like idiots. My poor mum went over on her ankle and managed to fracture it. The Western Oval is not a great place to try to get an over excited 57 year old out of with a broken ankle. As a footnote (no pun intended) I was married a month later and the sight of her hobbling into the service on crutches still brings a smile to my face. Purely from the perspective of knowing how it had happened. Go Deess

I just want to share my experience; we have been going to the footy together since he was 18months old but this year my 8 year old has really latched onto footy and through indoctrination has become died in the wool Demon. At 3/4 time I asked him if he wanted to head off home (I don't want to totally put him off the game). His immediate response was "no Dad, we have to stay and support our team" Naturally I took quite a deal of comfort from this. Hopefully we won't have that quandry too often in the future. He did admit to me later that the day we played the Eagles and got flogged by 100 points he felt a bit embarrased to support the team. It is tough supporting our club at any age. Go Dees!

But Old Dee, isn't buying a membership a discretionary donation. If anything these donations are better value for the club because they give nothing in return except a meal at Crown. As a business they must rely on a multitude of revenue sources: Memberships, Sponsorships Gate takings Merchandise to name but a few. The fact that the club has started tapping into this previously untapped resource i.e. supporters who choose to give a little bit more is nothing but another stream of revenue and darn good business.

Is it too simplistic to say that $750k reflects an extra 3000 memberships at $250 each?

I remember Bate's first game - kicked a goal with his first touch IIRC. He seemed like an inspired draft selection with a ready made footy body. It is amazing how when you strip away the relative class that was around him that day - Neitz, Robbo, Yze et al how ordinary he starts to look. I think this is the sad comment on the way the club has recruited over the past decade - there are no game changers around good ordinary players like Bate to help them to look more at home at this level. Look at Cheney - complete spud in Red and Blue but seems OK at the Dawks. Depth of playing list makes such a difference to players of his ability. Most of the league is made up of Matthew Bate type players but unfortunately he has the misfortune of finding himself playing in an extremely ordinary side that only exaggeratesd his short comings more. A really sad state of affairs and the blame goes way back!

I just don't get the connection between a player trying to "shop himself around" and not trying on the footy field; it is a bit like not tidying your house on the day of the auction - . Surely if he is trying to secure himself a higher contract at another club he should be playing out of his skin to impress other club's recruiters. He is not exactly hot property at the moment.

I learnt a valuable lesson about time keeping from a strict boss a long time ago; hopefully Sam will learn it too. That is all...no perfection here; just ask my wife!

Not at all but when I started my apprenticeship 33 years ago my boss explained very clearly to me that if I was a minute late he would dock me an hour. It made an impression then which I have carried through life. The boss was an A-hole but he taught me a valuable lesson about what was expected. I was never late after that. Go Dees
