I just question whether they have any possible grounds for a reduced payout. The deal was pretty clear from the beginning that if he broke down they were still on the hook for the full amount. That's what they agreed to in return for being allowed to bypass the RFA rules. I see no reason for the AFL to negotiate.

We shall see.

When the Buddy Deal was in the works, Hawthorn initially said that they would match any offer the Swans made. The Swans sought to bypass this capability by offering Buddy the absurdly long deal he is currently on which sees him on their list until he is 36 or so. They rightly believed that the Hawks would decline to match a deal of that length. Sadly for them, nobody believed that they really intended to go through with it, with the strong suspicion that they were planning on re-negotiating a shorter deal once they had him at the club. The AFL for once got it right and blocked any such move by informing the Swans that they would let the deal stand ONLY if the swans agreed that the yearly wages listed in the contract would be subtracted from their cap each year regardless of whether Buddy was still playing. In essence, if he suffered a career-ending injury in his first game for the club, they would still be without his portion of the salary cap for the next nine years. Sydney agreed to this stipulation. Unless they have somehow managed to strongly front-end his contract I think they're up the creek on this deal. Interesting on the trade radio front that Carlton are trying to nab first round picks for everything. Delusional, or just starting the bargaining process by asking a high price and planning to come down to reality? I really don't see either Henderson or Yarran fetching a first round pick.

I have a sneaking suspicion that he won't make it to the rookie draft.
-
I'd take a punt with a rookie pick if he's available. We took a chance on vandenBerg and it worked out pretty well for us. He was playing in a much weaker competition than the WAFL.
-
We did it with Jetta and it worked out pretty well. Plenty of people on here didn't rate Nev either.

I'd make a play for Schoenmakers before Black. 25 years old, 195cm and able to play forward, back or floating along the wing. He's been on the fringes at the Hawks for a long time and never quite manage to cement a spot because they import the best talls from other sides to play ahead of him. He's now got a flag to his name, so that's no longer keeping him there. He's certainly a better player than Dawes and probably better for the mobile HHF than Watts.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB – JAKE MELKSHAM
RalphiusMaximus replied to Theo's topic in Melbourne Demons
AFL site is talking about us doing a three-way with Port and the Bombers. We give up Toumpas and get Melksham. I'd probably call that a good deal depending on the WADA outcome. -
They tell us they'll make finals next season. Do we believe them?

I was wondering about this too, especially after he appeared in the Footy Show player review for our team. You'd think if he'd been shown the door then he wouldn't be representing the club in any way right? Maybe it's the old "if nobody else offers you a spot we'll rookie you" line? As for Dawes, Didn't like us paying that much for him when he was drafted, thought he might have improved a year or so ago, but am now utterly convinced that we were shafted. Pedersen is twice the player.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN KENNEDY

AFL.com say we're into him. Not sure what I make of this, but I guess we might see. -

He had a bloody good game.

They need to do something about the top clubs using bottom clubs as feeders. Personally I think rather than preventing top clubs from recruiting FA's they should give more power to bottom sides to keep their players or attract FA's. Sad as it is, we are the classic case to support this. We've lost players to FA every season since it was introduced, and always to a top four side. We've done pretty well out of the compensation in two of those years, probably gaining well over the value of the players, but it doesn't change the fact that top sides have taken the opportunity to wreak havoc with our ability to climb the ladder by plucking away the best of the players that we've put the time and effort into developing. So the question is, what can be done to stop Free Agency warping the competition beyond redemption? Limit the clubs a potential FA can go to by ladder position? Ban top (x) clubs from bringing in Free Agents? Create three pools of six and only let FA's move within their own pool? Surely there is some way the players can have their Free Agency that doesn't completely destroy the integrity and evenness of the competition?

He's an amazing athlete, but I'm not sold on his football. He can do some freakish things, but not frequently enough to justify a game on their own.
-
You weren't watching the game?
-
Looking at his game today I'd be thrilled to have him.
-
Pretty much. It looks like you could throw a blanket over the next half dozen.
-
The 3-us part of the draft is a bit of a puzzle. I really hope we manage to snare this kid with our first pick, but if he goes and Parish drops instead I'd be happy. Highly unlikely, but stranger things have happened. Who else is there in that range? Balic and Francis?
-
Offer enough and they have to give it some pretty serious thought. It's a case of what we're willing to sacrifice to get a player of that calibre to the club. That's why people were willing to believe the Dangerfield rumour. The club could afford to pony up that sort of cash, and if we did make an offer like that I don't think there's a player in the league who wouldn't stop and think about it.

2015 Player Review - # 36 Jeff Garlett
RalphiusMaximus replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think that would be four out of the last five seasons that he's kicked 40+ goals? That's a great return for a small forward. Carlton were insane to let him go. Even better is that he could easily have had more. His set shots weren't great this year and he dropped a lot of easy marks. If he gets those aspects sorted out he's going to be even more damaging. -
2015 Player Review - # 37 Aaron vandenBerg (R)
RalphiusMaximus replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
If he has low DE it's because he get's so much ball in contested situations and has to bullock his way out. He's an absolute beast, good size and pace and once he has a real pre-season I think he'll surprise us again with how good he is. -
2015 Player Review - # 41 Mitch White (R)

I have to comment on his build too. How many first year players look that strong already? He's obviously put in a huge amount of work in getting his body ready to go. -
We're in with a chance until he signs with someone else.
-
He's a pretty decent runner and not a bad kick. Could easily be turned into a rotating HHF/oversized Mid. He's also been plugged in at both ends of the ground over his career and done well. Roos loves the tall versatile players, so it's not beyond belief that we might go for him.
