Rohan Connolly: Real story isn't tanking, it's AFL incompetence

If the AFL have cleared the kruezer cup as they apparently have, then it's all over. Move on. -

Feisty for a newbie.. -
Bate is surely gone...

I am fully expecting them to beat us. There now I won't be disappointed.

On the Couch - Brock talks about 'tanking'

He said that he played to put Melbourne in the best position. Which means experimenting with players in different positions and sending players off for surgery so they would be ready for next season. Nothing to see here move on. -
This has all been investigated before. There has previously been no case to answer. Unless McLean says "Dean Bailey told us not to win" then its case closed. There is no new evidence. Even if McLean says that he still won't be able to prove it. I would bet London to a brick that even McLean who is no rocket scientist will wilt spectacularly and say " oh it was only a vibe there were no specific instructions" I am much more relaxed about this now than I was when I first heard it.

I don't believe that is right. The comp might be financially viable on a superficial level but around 10 clubs are financially struggling/unprofitable. Certainly having 10 teams in one town makes it difficult to get clear air, friday night TV, sponsorship etc but a comp based on handouts from an omnipotent body is anything but healthy. A draft and salary cap can only go so far. $15m a year on footy department spending is the gap between top and bottom. It has to be addressed as the discrepancy in some ways makes the salary cap and draft meaningless. Carlton seem to always get the players they want as do the pies. Albeit it may be on the trade market rather than the draft. No one was ever really going to get Luke Ball but the Pies. West Coast make zillions out of stadium advertising, corporate boxes etc. The Dees make nothing at the MCG because it goes to the MCC. The money from broadcast right might be there now but a lot is being sucked out by the struggling clubs and the development clubs at an alarming rate. -
Paul Gardner was/is President of a global advertising firm. He supposedly understands media and sponsorship. I say two things: 1. the financial situation under him was deplorable and very nearly bankrupted our club. His expertise in getting us sponsors and marketing our team were essentially useless. 2. For him to come out now and make these comments publicly shows that he is out to destroy our club. He would have known the full effect of what he was saying and the forum by which he delivered it. He is either monumentally stupid OR he is seeking to damage the club in the most vicious way possible. I dont give a toss that he worked 7 yrs pro-bono. Plenty of others have done more. Its what he did and has recently done that he will be judged on and in both cases he will be judged very harshly as a failed administrator and guardian of our club. As far as I am concerned he is not welcome at our club. He is suffering from relevance deprivation syndrome and should F off.

You didn't mention the despicable stadium deals that entrench clubs into the wealthy or pauper category, Geelong get 20000 to Skilled stadium and they make $500k. We get that to the MCG and write a cheque out to the AFL. West Coast and Collingwood spend $300k A WEEK more than the Demons. That is a recipe for disaster. And what about the fact that the AFL can't force Collingwood or Ess for that matter to wear an away strip?? (I don't count Ess's grey jumper as an away strip) The grumbles are growing louder by the day. The AFL is sick. -
Major new restrictions on struggling clubs

Non story. Bate now plays in the middle. Dunn plays run with roles. We now know Paul Johnstone can't play despite trying him in many positions including as a defender on Brown. It was proven that he couldn't play when he couldnt get a game at Hawthorn. All these supposed moves have actually been proven to be subsequently useful and strategic. They were not 'one off' moves in the least. The media can F off. Focus on Carltank. 3 wooden spoons in a row, lost the last 11 games of 2007 to get Judd. If we were tanking we would have lost the Kruezer Cup to get a priority for the next year you idiots in the media. If we were tanking we wouldn't have 'won' the Richmond game at the final siren you morons. -
Dan Nicholson out for 2 to 3 weeks with a fractured jaw. FFS! And Thomas gets a 2 week penalty. I have had enough ranting re the MRP but the system is appallingly bad. They have surreptitiously brought in the issue regarding the impact on a player and yet here we have a guy out for three weeks for a malicious act by a serial stager and reportee. Yet all he gets is two weeks. trengove was ridiculously stiff early in the season and we have been stuffed again. Apprently its OK to hit Melbourne players in the head and break their jaw. Col Sylvia would be appalled as well if he gave a toss about anything.. The MRP can flock off and frankly 2012 footy season can flock off.

Good base to work from. At least he can find his own footy. Most of our team can't.
-
You must have missed the part where I said he has been here 8 yrs and consistently underperformed. Players like Col kill everybody- coaches, supporters and teamates. I bet if you had to go to war you wouldn't pick Col to go with you because it would be almost certain he would let you down. I'd take Magner before him because you know you will get 100% commitment.

Really? How do you know that and who received it before Tom?? -

And Carlton didn't Brock ????? Losing the last 11 games when they knew Judd was coming back home. Rd 22, 2007???? My God he is brainless. "I left Melbourne because they tanked" (so I could go to another club that was better at it!!!!) -

jnrmac replied to Ouch!'s topic in Melbourne Demons
they went for youth rather than seasoned players. that has put them behind the 8 ball. the afl were not expecting them to draft so young for so many And yes they didn't hit the richer clubs because they would have been told to f off. As well as the fact that they have relationships at the filth and the scum... -

Explains nothing, So you are now touting this as fact? Does repeating unsubstantiated speculation make it true? -
Yet to see it. Turnover king. Poor second efforts. Zero defensive skills. And no hardness. Simply unable to win his own ball.
-
I don't care if he's a lad if he performs. You seem to be missing the obvious connection. Lad and non-performance = syonara.

None of the payers you speak of have been at the club for 8 seasons and have anywhere near the talent of Col. Its his application and commitment that are the problem. I am staggered you can't see this. 3 possessions to half time?? I couldn't give a toss about what he can do. I care about what he does do. And what he has done for 8 seasons. Which is stuff all. Never finished inside the top 5 in the B&F shows what the club think of him.

You don't know what you are talking about. Neeld has been at pains to point out Trengove is either 1, 2 or 3 in the pressure stats, tackles and work rate. His GPS numbers are 30% higher than last year. He's not playing well but its not because of effort. I think you are looking at a comparison with Watts and green superficially.

Yeah Eugene Arrocca wasn't getting too many kicks so they binned him. Norf have really kicked on since.
