The system is flawed. The nominations don't allow for a good player to be awarded if he is not nominated. History shows that if you are not nominated before round 8 you have buckley's of winning (only 3 have won outside that). Getting nominated in rd 22 is almost impossible to win. It USED (original concept) to be an award that awarded a player who was going to be a bona fide star. Now it is simply a 'best first year player' award with number of games and consistency etc being the major factors. Its a crap award and I am happy if no melbourne player get nominated. Our history of it isn't great (Gysberts nominated twice, Morton etc etc) It simply means their contract value goes up, they think they have made it as a football player potentially and other clubs start sniffing around to get them. No benefit whatsoever to the club.

He is a very ordinary bloke, And personally I think he is an ordinary coach. Coached a WA state side to two flags in 92 and 94, Was at the Pies for 12yrs before getting lucky in a very open year. Let's not get carried away. Yesterday was a good win and in the context of where we had been it was a tremendous, even team performance. It was very pleasing for Demon fans that we beat a team that we have only beaten once in 10 previous games. However the effort was first rate and we beat the dogs one on one all over the ground. We out tackled them, beat them in contested possessions and played for four quarters despite the dogs surging back. This was absent against the Hawks and our effort was really poor. If it was a one off then great. Time will tell. Last week we employed no different tactics against one of the more powerful teams in the comp than we had in the rpevious two weeks against the Swans and Freo. This was my original criticsim in the OP. We allowed the Dorks to dictate terms and got pummelled. Now if the narrative is that we effectively conceded that game to get players focused on the bigger picture - and this turns out to be the case - then that will likely be seen as a masterstroke. But until we win two in a row and we see consistent efforts from players then I won't be celebrating too hard. If they bring the effort against teh dogs to our next three games then yes we can get excited that we may finally have turned a corner. I hope so.

I would say that your comments are exactly why he was never successful. Lots of people telling him he was talented as a junior. Never being brought into line etc etc. Col was drinking his own bathwater for way too long. Maybe ppl are frustrated because they wish they had as much talent as Col had in his big toe. Had a great opportunity at Freo and because of his pizz poor attitude was turfed by a club that wont suffer fools or poor workers. Its our fault we tolerated such a poor football club for a long time but I still have lots of angst against Col because he is one of the reasons we are a failure over the past 10 yrs. You say we should celebrate his achievements? What exactly would they be? Celebrate the fact he was lucky enough to land at Melbourne where they were stupid enough to keep him on the list for 10 years. Yeah, well done Col. Its not his fault he played for 10yrs but its his fault he never finished inside the top 5 in the B&F - a real measure of worth at a footy club. Should have been a club champion.

The reality is that we cannot make big trades for players.Particularly the numbers you are talking about there. Aside from the fact very few want to come here, there are very few available in any given year. You can't trade your way out of this mess in 1 year.

Clubs will try to start hiding players and refusing to let them play in state teams etc in order to get their 'cost' down. Or create media stories a la Jack Darling. The smart clubs will be all over this and ususally takes the also-rans 5yrs to catch up on the smart tactics.

The other thing is that because this trial is de novo or starting again they will be looking at AOD9604 and all the other substances wont they? The ASADA trial was only ever about TB4. This could well be their undoing depending on the players statements etc.

Actually you have this wrong. They conceded the ruck and stuck their talls in the fwd line and sent a player back loose in defence. It was a great strategy that nearly won the game against the best team in the comp at the moment.
