Agree with all the highlights listed! Particularly exciting goals were Dom and H. I thought as much as anything what epitomised the game was the tough attitude. Viney's tackle on Ablett, Hogan smashing the pack, Kent getting hit and coming back and Ben Newton backing into the Suns player and drawing the kick late in the final quarter.

Jack Trengove re-injures his navicular (2014) - trade deal off
Choko replied to Wiseblood's topic in Melbourne Demons
It's nice words, but they don't actually mean anything. Are you saying loyalty means you don't entertain a rival club offer? Are you saying it is disrespectful to consider our options if he is requested by another club? What if they offered pick 1? If we could get Pendlebury from the filth, I wouldn't mind his disloyalty! I agree re McDonald... But that's different. We aren't ending Trenners career in an ambush, we aren't telling him he's not wanted, we are responding to a market approach. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JEFF GARLETT

I just think this is very smart recruiting. A genuinely skilful player. If he doesn't make it, we have lost nothing. If he makes it, we have gained plenty. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BILLY STRETCH
Choko replied to e25's topic in Melbourne Demons
Well I'm not that old, although I'm feeling it today....! I think it was 2004 when I was in the demons' rooms before we played the Crows in Adelaide late in the year. We were decimated by injuries to key players and lost a low scoring game... but that's another story. Before the game, some young kid was decked out in the MFC gear ready and raring to run through the banner. Barry, one of the MFC stalwarts, told me that the eager kid was Stretcha's boy, Billy, and he was going to be a gun one day for the dees. The dees were deliberately trying to curry young Billy's love, with the encouragement of Dad! Now, he is a listed demon.... and still a kid!!! -
Worried and disgruntled about Roos' limited tenure

All of the above. Just not Roos. -

You're right. He can't coach. -
Worried and disgruntled about Roos' limited tenure

This is a ridiculous thread. You don't get to choose Roos' terms. You choose Roos for 3 or no Roos. We should be comforted that 3 years of Roos is better than 10 years of most, and then Goodwin learns from Roos and takes over seamlessly with Roos still present. This is the very least of our problems. -
Again, like with Frawley, it comes down to leadership. If Dunn had it, would we have kids as captain? No... They aren't leaders. As a result, they make poor calls and say stupid things. They also let us down time and again. Compare and contrast to the grand finalists. It is a legacy of a weak culture.

James has proven that he is not, and was never, a true leader of this football club. He is now an irrelevant ex player that hopefully delivers a gun from pick 3. Bye James. Learn how to kick.

I know I'm about 10 pages behind, but I totally agree with this. The players are too close to each other and not close enough to true leadership and devotion to the club. At Hawthorn, if you're out, you're out... History. Irrelevant. Yes, there is a place for compassion, but it was only 2 weeks ago that Clark's only personal media statement is that he wanted to play for us. I was speaking to another senior leader at our club who said exactly the same as Garland. That he understands and supports the decision. I was treated like a pariah when I suggested that from the outside it appeared a dog act. I think we have a long long way to go.

Agree. Although I don't think there was too much doubt about the third year, I think this is very good news. It says to our players that there are 2 more years of Roos, and it says to the market that we have stability. It also allows time to recruit, assess and plan for Roos' successor. In that regard, it increases the pool because instead of it having to be someone who needed substantial assistant experience, we can pick someone like a Ling if we want to and they will have 2 years under Roos, and maybe more if he sticks around in a different capacity as he has flagged doing. Great news. Go dees!

Maybe the Melbourne Yankees?!

That's exactly right. Eddie is the best headline grabber in Australia, but this has nothing to do with equalisation. This is because Collingwood got hit by a bad drawing fixture time. Rarely happens, so he's sooking. Well cry me a river. Collingwood only got 50K to their final against Port last year from memory. We would have had more. I think they should be compensated for that too.... in the name of equalisation, of course.

Incredibly inept officialdom in the AFL members area
Choko replied to joeboy's topic in Melbourne Demons
I can vouch for this. The reserved sticker was up to the previous row, and a nice attendant had a print out of the unreserved and literally read it to me. Joeboy, we obviously had the same toss bag official being just a general a**hole and not letting kid sit in empties. But more broadly, when I went back to the nice chick to ask her what was going on, they said that they sold them just before the game. For the sake of a couple of dollars, that it treating keen fans with utter contempt. -
Its the grand old flag, with Melbourne in it.

Incredibly inept officialdom in the AFL members area
Choko replied to joeboy's topic in Melbourne Demons
Exactly the same happened to me. Row K, bay Q19. I arrived at 115 because my daughter was ding the guard of honour and 5 minutes before the game, same thing happened. Worse still, they said it was reserved and 10 out of 15 seats weren't taken but they wouldn't let us sit there so our group was split. I understand they decided to sell the seats at the last minute. It's an absolute disgrace. -
I have no real issue with the vision. As said by others, my issue is do we really want the vision of a late to life Melbourne supporting top end lawyer to speak for us? Really, Glen's experience is highly atypical. Who chooses a club for the first time in his 40s and how many base it on the 1800s? His experience is not most people's reality or motivation. It's great to want the club to be synonymous with the city. But to say you're comfortable talking because we've turned the corner (premature) and to talk about Collins St connection is alarming. The other thing is, we didn't have 5 ties at the same time. But even if we did, that's not the sort of analogy that inspires confidence that the President is on the level of the type of members we need.

I'm not a gambler, but I play small fry with an account. I put $50 in 6 years ago and I have taken out a humble $350 from the account over the years without putting another cent in. I have more than the original $50 in there now. I feel I need to say that because the second you defend odds and gambling, people just assume you are a gambler, which is clearly overly simplistic. You are somewhat incorrect that there is only irresponsible gambling, and also in your statement that the odds are always stacked against you. For starters, with footy betting, your odds are not formed by the bookies, they are framed by the markets. Then, I grant you, the odds are "watered down" for the bookies' margin. But there is no question that the market does sometimes deliver odds that are attractive. For example, if you know statistically that games are likely to be won by less in the wet, and the market hasn't taken that into account (or for example the market can respond late to a late withdrawal), then there are good odds to be had. Also, Collingwood is always shorter than they should be because more people put more money into them, so if you think North is a good shot against Collingwood, you're likely to be getting better odds than you ought (if you know what I mean!). Footy betting is absolutely gambling, and over time more people lose. No doubt. But it's not the same as throwing your dosh into a pokie.

I'm on it! Same margin paying $2 on iasbet, which is where I choose to lose money! Oh, and I should have read your last line before clicking!! GO DEES!
-
Totally agree. For some reason, the whole article had the stench of another administration just not getting it.
-
Can we win? Absolutely. And that's progress. Will we win? Well, with Dawes I would have given us some small chance. Without him I don't think much chance, but certainly not no chance! I took us under the line (36.5) and in fairly confident of that!
-
Agree with most of the posts here and quite impressed by the class and sensitivity of posters.... knowing that deep down we are all thinking it sucks like a Hoover.
-
A top night, and congrats to the organisers. Is there any red wine left in Melbourne? I reckon you will find Dawes comes straight back into the 1's in 2 weeks' time, unless any further dramas. We will definitely throw our team around this weekend, but I know we knew that already. Only other comment is that the club is finally being run by a footy department of adults. I'm indifferent about our President at this stage, but finally the club is professional.

It's getting harder and harder to see a way out for us. You look at the way Port turned it around and try to take hope from that, because it's the closest thing we have to an analogy. You look at Richmond and their stability at management/football department level, and think that if things continue to be managed well by Jackson, Roos and Bartlett, we can turn the ship. But unlike Port, Richmond and even GC, GWS and the dogs, we clearly have a list of scarred, reclusive, mentally shot players. i.e. we have so little to work with. If there was some clear hope on the horizon, we could maybe be some prospect of picking up some marquee players for overs, but even that is unlikely. I don't think Roos could have done more to bolster our midfield over the off season. However, even with him and even taking account our injuries, it is extremely difficult to see, or sell, hope. I think we supporters need to hear from CEO or President about why we should keep coming to games. I am mad keen, and I'm very close to done. I took both kids for the first time yesterday. It was depressing.
