  1. Wright played 3 times against us for 3 losses, including the 1964 GF - good result! Amazing photo from the time of him standing hands on hips watching the play 80 metres away while Somerville is flat out on the ground next to him. One of the Filth players goes over to near where Somerville was lying and mouths the words along the lines of “You so-and-so…”, but not aimed at the victim.
  2. Yep. This is what worries me. We are comparatively a boutique club, but still should be able to make the best of that by being more proactive about fan engagement.
  3. Troy Davis?
  4. Reckon he might have put on a bit of weight since the 91kg was measured, and looks to be moving with a bit more assurance at training as he starts to readjust to a code he hasn’t played for some years prior to last year.

My memory is that Walls hit the post from an easy set shot, giving a draw and Footscray held their spot and we missed out.
  6. Kenny to Towna’s right, between Dicko and Bluey I’d say.
  7. Laurie: AFL-level attributes displayed
  8. The potential sub provides some familial possibilities around the CHF choice - our own Tony Campbell under the father/son rule or Glen Swan to join his brother?
  9. The first book that I read! (At least I’ve read more books than I’ve written, unlike some sporting heroes.)
  10. Fwiw, someone told me today that Peter Adams is a Dee tragic. Second-hand info, so don’t know directly.
  11. On my way to game, and realise from The Red Fox that it’s the ground we were at for the weekend after Norm was sacked - the only time Melbourne played at North’s then home ground. Ominously it was round 13, and we were well beaten in front of 8,312 hardy fans. We did at least salvage a League record out of the rubble of that round, and one unlikely to be beaten: temporary coach Checker Hughes was the oldest person then to have coached an AFL team, and remains so at 71 years, 148 days. Dunno whether that qualifies for the “embarrassing records” thread or not, but it is what it is.
  12. Yes, although appointment of Hardwick may also have the effect of players wanting to stay under the “master coach”.
  13. I thought he did well.
  14. The mob that installed Peter Jackson to steer us from rock bottom to premiers? ”Apart from that, what else has the AFL done for us…?”
  15. Col Sylvia also has an asterisk on his place in that team, as I recall that it took him till his second game before he had that first kick - that’s gotta be a rare achievement!
  16. Cheers ‘Stone, it’s long been my goal to win one of your brain teasers!
  17. We are the current league record-holders of the lowest percentage at the end of the season since 1966 (leaving aside the disintegrating shell of Fitzroy and the start of the GWS and GC franchises), with 54.1 in our reverse-stellar year of 2013. I note that the Eagles currently are at 51.4 and will have the job in front of them to not take this particular unwanted crown from us.
  18. Harmes, JJ avoiding scrutiny, Joeboy? (Admittedly JJ little game time)
  19. This made me chuckle. As a matching pair I think we handed out his biggest loss as a Swans coach as well - the “Jamie Bennell puts the jets on for a goal” game at the MCG.
  20. Does anyone know the lightly built guy with the early Bjorn Borg hair stylings and wearing #36? And no, it wasn’t Kozzie.
  21. Norm Smith could go in as captain/coach! Looking at Gaspar/Ottens reminds me that while we have had the better brother at times, we’ve probably been on the wrong side of the ledger over the decades in terms of having the better/best brother, unless we had both (eg, the Flowers). Brayden Maynard the current standard-bearer. An interesting category!
  22. DS, would I be right in thinking that if you dropped out S Febey for someone like Ron Baggott or a D Cockatoo-Collins it would be a team that had a brother who played at the level for a club other than Melbourne?
  23. Cue ground announcer: “Number 23…JAAAAMES JORDON!”
  24. He was out doing running with the others from the later game as twilight set in, so probably cramp.
