If you consider our current position, which other team would be performing well without: First pick FF (Hogan) First pick CHF (Dawes) First pick ruck (Jamar) First and second picks ruck/forward (Clark, Gawn) Equal first KP defender (garland) That would be roughy, hale, McEvoy, Gibson + from the Hawks, for example. How do you think other teams would go? Do we lack depth, or is this just too much for any team to cover? I know we are 'spineless' ATM....but this is ridiculous...

  4. And there is the point. Until leadership is defined, it remains an elusive motherhood statement. Are we talking about good leadership or effective? The interesting question for me will be how the Dees define what leadership means to them. The one they follow the easiest or the one who helps the group achieve their super ordinate goal? Will say a lot about their potential for success.
  5. The other part of this is Charisma- take a look at leadership exchange theory. Also look at group/ team psychology, in particular social identity theory and salience of prototypical members. Those kiddies in the playground demonstrate it all perfectly. The most 'attractive' to the group may not be the best leader....

Even skewed meta-analysis shows limited support (and highly inconsistent ) for personality as leader theory. There are many others. Each personality type has low correlation. To leadership performance. Leadership is one of those motherhood statements we want people to have. The problem is in its definition, developing the skills, and then the implementation. Unfortunately there are too many people teaching leadership poorly and leaving people scarred by the experience. I do a lot of work in the field, and when you boil it down leadership CAN be taught. Some people have more baseline skills and preferences which are interpreted as leadership 'talent', and there are others that start a long way back. Leadership will not be found in a Donald Trump (insert celebrity boss name of your choice) autobiography, where the wannabes hang out...
  7. The first part of being a great leader is about self awareness. If you don't allow yourself to evaluate your true strengths and weaknesses and 'lead' yourself, how can you lead others? The self awareness bit is often the hardest, and when people assume that they are not the problem or don't need this mambo jumbo BS, then they really will be stuck. Some will get it more than others, and some more quickly than others. The club has to make culture and leadership a fundamental plank of what they are doing, so even the recalcitrants see that if they want to be in, this is part of the deal. For me, the trip to Sorrento will not end the process, but will start it. I would be structuring up the days to build inclusion, sort out competence and competition issues and then start driving enhanced self-disclosure. Only then can these programs work to lead to high performance.
  8. LT is one approach- one that Paul Roos has used before, and obviously likes. Contrary to popular opinion, leadership is a set of skills. It is not a 'personality' (in fact, the correlation between personality type and leadership is less than 0.2, or put simply less than 10% of leadership is personality.) Leadership and culture go hand in hand. I am looking for the Dees to demonstrate clear standards as well as skills of leadership in this new era. If LT can help them, then great. Otherwise we will be cellar dwellers again. The difference to mobs like colon-wood is that even though they may talk the talk, with fig jam running the show, there is only one leader, and the rest is just window dressing. Let's hope Roos and LT create a list of leaders at MFC.
  9. This 'drafted mates' idea: you have a group of kids who have gone through the system together, playing u18's, TAC, or whatever. You then select from that pool some players for your list. Likelihood some of them will be 'mates''. I imagine that we are not going to look at some of their mates who don't play footy, just to keep a tethered goat at the stables so the thoroughbred hangs around. If we want to keep a top pick, it's because it's a great club, where they get paid a heap and have the chance to win. Most of these guys would sell their mums to get drafted. If we make a selection because of teenage bromance (and it isn't a coincidence of being together in the same system), then we truly are screwed up. Imagine your mate being drafted to 'encourage' you to stay. We would be better off drafting some kids with personality who can make friends with our list.

  11. Not to forget that rotations will be capped next year. There may be a premium on midfielders that can rest forward, either assuming the role of crumbed and goal sneak, or defensive blocker on the opposition back link up option. The role of the pure small goal sneak forward may evolve with the new rules. Let's see. Btw- Fitzy is not the small forward option. Imagine him as a link up half forward flanker, pinch hitting in the ruck, galloping around the park and pumping it inside 50 - and occasionally kicking a few on the way through. Hard match-up.
  12. Welcome, Crossy! A great addition to the club one year deal with conditions is smart management. The demons midfield is no walk-up start any more. Have to earn your place with the 'flying V' (Viv, Vince and Viney), Michie, Jones, Cross and friends. What is Barrett thinking? Anyway, watch him gush about how he know how he knew how we were going to be great as we improve. Then it will be time to roll out a retweet. Twits on twitter, who'd a thunk?
  13. I was running a very similar projection this morning. IF ( and it is a big if) that these changes drive improvement, I see us moving from Band 3 (aints, Brissie, wet toast, GwS, Adelaide) into band 2 (North, GC, Richmond, Ess, port, coll) but no chance to move up to band 1 (the rest). Our position will depend upon performances against this group and our draw. May see some sliders (my tip: Coll and maybe Sydney), and some other improvers (bullies, GC?). We should end up somewhere between 7th and 13th. Richmond to finish 9th. Top 8 possible, but things would need to go really well for us in 14. Crazier things have happened, and we should have a good draw.
  14. It will be interesting to see how the cap on interchanges affects selections. FP may be the new 'bench' so we may see resting ruck/forward in one, and mid in the other. The specialist small forward may be a thing of the past. Jamar may struggle as he would need to do a lot more around the ground.
  15. I suspect we have ticked off our wish list. Interesting to see what happens in the last week. Can we improve our picks? Do we move someone out? Do we facilitate a deal for others? Very happy with where we are at. Excited by what may be possible!
  16. Happy with this. Forgetting 'dad's army' , we have added Viney(father son STEAL), Toumpas, Hogan, Michie, Tyson (and Barry) in the last 2 drafts/trades. If we nail pick 9, get a swap for Vince with the compo pick for silver-tail and upgrade Clisby, that's pretty good, I'd reckon. The dad's army were there to take some load off and teach the young'uns about training and playing. And we could still add Cross....or pull something out of left field.....
  17. Not pre-season, but guys getting on with some training anyway in their holiday, using the facilities. The better they come back, the better the preseason will be. Great to see Clark up and running, for sure!
  18. We should not pay overs. If so, we walk away and draft a gun at #2! We pick up cross and one other with a later pick. We drive development out of the young guns we have and support them with a few older, able types. We swing a few interesting changes like Watts to the midfield. Why pay overs?? It is Adelaide and Essendon that have to 'buy' their way back to the table. If we pay overs we are way too stupid to deserve to be in this competition.
  19. Ling has taken an advisor role at Norf, I understand. Dew locked in at the Swans. We should employ 3 great assistants and have Roos select his man in 18 months.
  20. Just because we are shopping it around doesn't mean we are giving it away. We have a BATNA (best alternative to negotiated agreement) of 2nd pick, who is likely to be a gun. If we trade for less, then we truly are mugs. I agree, this is the first step in a bigger game. Good luck to the team in getting some quality outcomes....

  23. Yep, that was a typo. 2014. Preseason in about 10 weeks. We just can't do it like we have done it. The red and blue has to mean more than a paycheque to the players.
  24. We have put a rabble out onto the park this year. The lack of intensity, the lack of team cohesion, the lack of 'culture' have all been identified. Not the least the lack of talent applied in the games. So imagine the start of 2014. First pre-season training session. What would you do? Here's an idea based on group and psychology: I would invite all the people then on the list to assemble, and give them all a Casey scorpions jumper. I would hang 22 Melbourne jumpers on a fence, and make each member of the squad EARN the right to wear the jumper. If you havent earned the jumper, don't expect to get selected for a game. I would then establish a really intense set of criteria that need to be achieved to earn the jumper. Once you get one, you are on 'probation' to keep it. At certain points, those who have earned the jumper oversee the efforts of the others to earn the jumper that theythemselves have earned. Once you earn the jumper, then have bonding sessions only with those that have earned the right. Have competitions then to see who makes it into the leadership group from the Melbourne boys. Have the 'Melbourne boys' decide on the standards and punishments for breaching them, including demotion to the 'Casey Squad'. Just because you are on the list does not mean you have earned the right to wear the jumper. Use cognitive dissonance, group norms, FIRO theory and a few other theories to create a real sense of achievement in wearing the red and blue. Make it mean something. What would you do?
