we live in a world now where grievance and offence are king, so it is little wonder that a rule that requires an umpire to read the minds of players was doomed to be a disaster from the start. it ends up having the effect that umpires become even more disrespected now.
unfortunately the afl will just double down supporting the umpiring decisions come hell or high water, rather than admit they got another rule change based on interpretation and social engineering, wrong

maybe small ground, lots of congestion and ball ups
and statistician(s) couldn't keep up or get a decent view so missed a lot of stats
like i said "with a few exceptions"
when i was at school, state primary and secondary schools had sporting teams and a good inter-school comp, but it was only a few years after i finished school that it all disappeared.
a pity because it was much better playing with your mates than in some local community team where you probably didn't know the other team mates except for a few hours each week
