  1. GWS has approximately 30k member of which a quarter to a third are based in Canberra. A conservative estimate is that at least a third barrack for another club, (I've also heard it might be as high as half) and have a GWS membership to get into see the footy at Manuka. Undoubtedly this bolsters the crowd attendance in Canberra. When the Swans play GWS here in Canberra the crowd is overwhelmingly Swans supporters. Of the around 20k GWS members that live in Sydney only about 6K actually go to the footy. It took Sydney about 30 years to financially break even up there - GWS are in for a long road. I can't imagine a mini-rebuild of their list in the short term will improve crowd numbers.
  2. Misdirected I feel, Sheedy and Choco are two very strong personalities, oil and water. No way Choco gets a call while Sheedy is calling the shots. Choco was the succession plan at GWS, but next minute it's Leon Cameron in the drivers seat and Choco is out on his proverbial. To channel the great Pete Townsend and put words in Choco's mouth "I won't get fooled again!" I can't find the source, but it's out there somewhere that he's no longer interested in being a head coach. edit: To illustrate my point Sportsbet have Choco at 15.00 to coach Essendon and David Teague at 12.00. So Choco is no chance. Hird is favourite at 3.75 and Lyon 4.00 (but I sense that Ross the Boss and Sheeds might not get on).
  3. He'll have his hands full with the Lizard, but he's up for it.
  4. Probably the right result. It would have served no purpose to bring up the evidence in a tribunal hearing. Having said that Zorko won't escape punishment - he'll be forever tarnished as a result of his comments and treated accordingly by all opponents that would be well aware of the comments. He'll be treated for the grub that he is. I really like Chris Fagan, and I know he has limited options, but surely Zorko cannot be captain of that club after this season with behaviour like that.
  5. They need to have an angle they are reporting on an incident that wasn't related to the Crows or the Power. The fact that it's a national game seems to have escaped their small-town myopia.
  6. One of the other things we learnt is that the rumour (nightmare) that Hird will replace Yze as an assistant coach might be over.
  7. Well I've got a couple of tips for them: 1. Don't have a drug scandal where 42 of your list and coach are banned from footy for a year. 2. Don't sack your coach (but don't tell them they're sacked) while you chase another coach. 3. Maybe have a conversation with the coach that you are chasing to see if there's any chance of him coming over after he's been courted for four weeks by another club before you telegraph it to the media. 3. Don't have Kevin Sheedy on your board. ... but by all means reappoint James Hird as your coach and maybe get Jobe Watson in as an assistant to help with communication.
  8. What's even more delicious about this is that Essendon could clearly have gotten Clarko mid-season if they hadn't gone through their sham of an internal review that said there was nothing to see here in relation to their on field performances! I'm happy that the media assumption that the big club would simply beat out the small club because of it's resources has fallen flat!
  9. The Hird rumour must be a pisstake surely. I didn't think anything could take away my passion for the MFC and football until now. If they bring him in then I'm out.
  10. 600K less over 6 years is 700K a season with triggers to reach 800K a season, which is what was rumoured to be offered by Essendon and Freo
  11. They can with AFL permission - which would be almost a foregone conclusion.
  12. The rumour with Jacko was that he would re-sign for a couple of years with us if we couldn't be satisfied in a trade with Freo. With all the talk now that he's definitely gone there's two possible alternatives. 1. People are filling in the blanks and jumping ahead of the game when in fact there's been no further progress 2. There has actually been progress and the two clubs have an 'in principle' agreement I think it's clear he wants to return to WA, but It's not clear that a deal can be done. The reality is we probably won't be any the wiser for a little while yet.
  13. Doubt we get Meek as well, but we could get a Blake Acres or a future second round draft pick to trade for someone like a Kieren Briggs or Matthew Flynn (considering the rumours of Grundy going to GWS)
  14. For the here and now he's a better ruck, a better contested mark and a better forward target. It would release Max to play more time forward (where I think he's actually our best tall forward).
  15. There's media whispers that Freo's clearing the decks to make room for Jacko is upsetting some of the natives. Longmuir thinks Lobb will be at Freo next year (though I wouldn't expect him to admit that he's a trade target, but he did seem genuine when he said it), so I do wonder if Darcy might be in the mix being a Vic boy. I'd trade Jacko for Darcy if it came to that.
  16. There was - it was called the Caracella rule after Sheedy traded Blake Caracella less than 6 months after signing a new contract. I don't think it exists any more. Of course players have always had the right to refuse a trade, just like Ryan Ferguson (not Fitzgerald) did when we tried to trade him to the Hawks for Brad Sewell. I think the only players who can't be traded now are new draftees and rookies. I think new draftees have to have been at a club for at least two years now (preventing the Nathan Buckley scenario where he left Brisbane after only one season).
  17. From what I saw of the Vic Country vs WA game yesterday I like the look of Aaron Cadman. Could be on the radar if we get an early pick.
  18. Nick Smith is still 4-6. Normal programming resumed!
  19. maybe But considering the angst on this site over the Lever and May deals I think there's a lot of unrealistic expectations of what's fair when it comes to trades. Jackson is a best 22 blue sky prospect being offered lucrative long term contract by multiple clubs. The trades will have to be commensurate with that. The footy industry is pragmatic - there's no value in trying to low ball the club because what goes around comes around in footy.
  20. Not really, but I'd be hoping one of he or Briggs/Flynn (from GWS) is brought in. We need someone that's had senior exposure and can handle themselves (all three have shown something). I know Lobb is likely to leave Freo, but he and Jacko aren't like for like. Lobb was recruited to play forward and he doesn't like playing ruck. Jacko is a ruckman/mid. Meek wouldn't be thrilled about the prospect and would have to consider his options.
  21. But we do hold some cards. He's wanted by both WA clubs to start with. He might have a preference about which one he goes to(and that is only conjecture at this stage), but if he really wants to go back to Perth and he loves our club as he has consistently said he does, then he'll be open to going to the club that can get the deal done.
  22. I hope not, Bedford's pace is important for our forward line functioning. People need to see him (1 goal from 8 disposals) in the same light as Kozzie (1 goal from 7 disposals) and Spargs (1 behind from 12 disposals), it's the pressure that he brings that's important and the repeat opportunities at goal that creates for our other forwards/mids. We aren't going to get that with Weid or Brown.
  23. He's not a free agent, so if he wants to go then he has to rely on a suitable trade being arranged. The advantage we have is that there will be interest from both WA clubs who will probably have similar offers on the table should that be his decision.
  24. Flynn or Briggs could potentially be gettable with Preuss the preferred#1 at GWS. I like both as AFL ready rucks and find it hard to split them (GWS seem to have Flynn marginally ahead) but the issue is if Dogga stays it will be really hard to attract one of them (probably Briggs) to be third banana. Preuss saw the writing on the wall when Dogga was recruited and left. If Dogga leaves then it makes us a more attractive option.
