Is it my imagination, or was Neeld given the flick seven long years ago? And not last week?

Channel 9 are about to sign a record deal for NRL TV rights. That leaves one bidder for the AFL TV rights. The AFL won't have so much leverage and are probably nervous and wanting to show Channel 7 the value they will get, ie eyeballs & ad revenue.

"Let's show up Schwab. Let's really stick it to him. We'll put in a coach-killing performance so shameful it will never be forgotten in football history. That'll show the world we mean .... something ... ? Come on boys! Who's with me?!"

What did they know? Everyone was numb after the calamity of 186. That was not the performance of an AFL standard club. Everyone's heads were spinning and they barely knew what day it was, let alone what was a good or bad decision for a footy club. Getting in Malthouse's right hand man seemed a master stroke. Except he was the wrong man at the wrong time. If Neeld had gone to a club like Hawks or Swans, with a good list & good culture, who knows what might have happened. Some of his instincts were spot on. It was the way he acted on them that backfired. But at the shell shocked Demons, all he managed was to inflict more trauma and nearly finished the club completely.

Social media is social poison. Twitter is an outrage machine and facebook has been shown to cause depression. Not in a few instances. People who use facebook feel worse afterwards. It's because the people in charge want to dodge their responsibility to society at every turn. "All power and no responsibility" was made to describe them.

Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory
Mazer Rackham replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
There was a game at the G when we were giving Essendon a hiding, and then they kicked something like 9 goals to nothing in the last to scrape home. And there I was sitting wedged between two EFC mates who were strangely silent for the first 3 quarters, but kindly proceeded to inform me of MFC's every last fault and failing during the 4th. Good times. -
It was the coaches who wanted the sub in the first place. An injured player meant only 3 interchange compared to 4 ... unfair! Then when they got their sub, they didn't like it coz they couldn't interchange as much. The coaches don't know what they want, except to win games at any cost. As has been shown time and again, the coaches are the last people who should be influencing the direction of the game.

"The SANFL has decided to award a free kick against the team that kicks or handballs a ball out of bounds without being touched in a bid to lower the number of throw-ins and total stoppages. "Players won't be penalised if they spoil or carry the ball over the line unless the umpire deems the action to be deliberate." https://www.afl.com.au/news/92454/sanfl-introduces-new-out-of-bounds-rule-and-50-rotations-per-game

1. SANFL have a good rule for this. Last touch unless it's a disputed ball, in which case, throw in. 2. or we could get umpires who know how far 15m is. When kicking, they think it's really short. When running with the ball, they think it's really long. They must get trained by fishermen. 4. let's try this one first and see if anything else is needed ... 3. ... such as backwards kicking. Man up if you don't like it.

Former Dees Assistant Jennings Wants To Scrap VFL
Mazer Rackham replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Well, why not. After grass roots & country footy, why not go on with the knife and end VFL? Next, ammos and suburban leagues. We all know there's only one league that counts, so why not have only that one? -
No 1 is Dean Martin or maybe Shane McGowan

Your wish has come true! Follow the link and read between the lines ... And a succinct summary of the whole debacle:

Old territory, but the nub of it was not that the the players didn't want to go on the camp, but that they went behind the club leadership in trying to get out of it. The camp sounds like faux tough-guy wanna-be stuff with little connection to football. Hopefully it was nothing like the mad psycho-drama that the Adelaide players found themselves in. I think it's right that the players didn't want to do it. In hindsite, the issue should be, why didn't they spend the time on actual football skills like kicking?
-
More recent that that ... Ricko .. Richo ... Richards ... something like that
-
The coaches say "improve your forward 50 entries!" and the players say "okay, got it!" Then they run another set of 100m sprints. And if you score with the ball ricocheting off two walls, everyone takes a drink I heard a rumour that we did get an experienced AFL coach, well regarded in the industry in spite of not having tangible results on the scoreboard, who was expected to help with all kinds of coaching issues. An extra set of eyes and ears, if you will. Whatever happened to him?

And for those of a theatrical bent: plays about football (one made into a TV series, the other into a movie) AND THE BIG MEN FLY by Alan Hopgood THE CLUB by David Williamson The GREAT MCCARTHY (mentioned above) was also made into a movie or TV special if memory serves.

This is a good point. Eddie has a stellar reputation in this area, but if you'd spent 20 years in an Amazonian jungle and came back to civilization 5 years ago, you'd wonder what it's based on. Adam Goodes "King Kong", Caro Wilson "drowning", his most recent wooden stint at hosting the last incarnation of the Footy Show, now this Tony Jones thing where Jones of all people appeared more composed and on point. He just doesn't seem to have the magic in front of a camera or mic any more.
-
I'm no fan of either Jones or Eddie, but Eddie was quite correct in what he said. What really got my attention was Eddie looking and sounding like he's had 6 coffees too many.

2019, another year goes by for the players on our list 2020, another year goes by for the players on our list 2021 ....... ??? We have our most talented list in a generation and if the game plan doesn't smarten up quick bloody smart, it will be wasted. Are their careers going to be tossed away by a stubborn coach who thinks the most important thing in football is to be "hard at it"? It's one thing to have fit, committed players who are hard at the ball. What happens when they encounter another team who is fit, committed, hard at at, and have some idea of what they are doing?

Rugby was in a bit of strife before this. AFL, NRL, other big comps will survive (in what form TBD), but a national comp with no FTA and declining junior participation is in heaps.

The leopard doesn't change its spots. When he was with us, away from his bad WA influences, he often showed disinterest and went sooking to the umps. That's what we'll get if he comes back. Huge talent, likely to be unfulfilled no matter the club. Maybe AFL-level football isn't for him.

Yeah, okay, but with social distancing I'm limited in what I can do right now.
