These aren’t knowns. It’s speculation.

Whatever happened to “best available”? Being Victorian didn’t stop them from selecting Chesser.

Are we sure? I’m not convinced.

The 2023 Draft and Trade Targets Thread
Mach5 replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think we have that A grade culture largely because of the people we choose to bring into the club. And that culture still wasn’t able to help Harley Bennell change his spots. -
He might be a handy player, but GC won’t want to absorb any of that salary. The coin puts an end to any discussion IMO.

I think you might find clubs like Hawthorn would also be pushing this agenda, as their Dingley project included a healthy NGA component as reasoning for the development. It is to have around 6 ovals and they have pushed hard to relocate the state’s largest junior league (SMJFL) to have free use of their first class facility once completed... so they can pick the eyes out of the 8 year olds. The same league whose GM sought meetings with Pert to build a relationship while NGAs were still in play, but was fobbed off. We could be handing out junior welcome packs full of merch branded with MFC and paid for wholly by sponsors to every kid in the league, but we (he) didn’t see any benefit in it. This is how a club like Richmond grew their brand & membership base - carpet bombing the whole of the Cardinia region & beyond, and even encroaching heavily on ours while we chose to neglect it & give them a free pass. One of my black marks against his name.

GC currently hold: 4, 28, 31, 42, 47, 56, 60, 65, 69. Assuming GC’s 3 early academy picks get bid on at the relatively conservative: Pick 2 = 2517 = 2014 with discount Pick 6 = 1751 = 1401 with discount Pick 13 = 1212 = 970 with discount In total they’d need 4385 points. Currently their pick haul is worth 4507. However I’m unsure if Walter going at pick 2 then bumps each pick out a spot, devaluing it. So 4 & 28 would be eaten up, but then 31 would become 32 & so forth. Then Reid would absorb 32, 43, 48 & 57. Unsure what the change would be from Walter, but we’re looking at a shortfall if they want Rogers too. Anyway I think they’ll want to capitalise on pick 4, converting it to sufficient points to cover all 3, and then future picks if possible. Subject to trades swapping picks, I’d be worried about competition from Sydney, Adelaide, St Kilda & Bulldogs, if they have the appetite for pick 4. No one else would come very close in matching points totals in trade. And I doubt they have the desire we do.

Not to mention longterm setting a precedent with trading out the likes of Peter Wright and Will Brodie for pocket fluff.
-
You can thank Mark Neeld for that. They’d also project a late first rounder next year. I have Crom finishing top 4. Still, they may not want to burn their picks this year for a single early choice, like we clearly do.

Can’t quite claim it then!

Or alternatively, one of my posts this morning reads as if I’d already seen the article. When was it published?!

JJ as a FA will leave for no return, but will provide a vacant list spot.

The way I see it, based on current ladder position we have 15, 24 & 34 which we have no intention of using and is the points equivalent of pick 3. Plus whatever comes back in return for Grundy, Harmes, et al. I can’t see another club bidding more than that. If need be we could throw in next year’s first or second. With 4&5, that’s a strong hand to trade for pick 1. For parity, we should really be receiving pick 20 in return with 1. I think it’s more likely we get back West Coast’s 35, 38 or 54, or that it’s a 3 way trade and some of those go to GC, maybe even letting us keep say 24 (wishful thinking).
-
I think it was practically 8 & 12 last year for pick 2 which became Sheezel... and Reid would appear to be a level above. Would definitely cost more.
-
All our 2nd round picks & late first rounder to GC, as they need points to match academy bids & their pick 4 would be absorbed into matching for Walter at pick 2.

ACL may have hindered him? (I think he did an ACL?)

Melksham replacement?
-
Hold on - 10 weeks ago your first paragraph described Flanders.
-
Rivers will make people stand up and take notice. He has increasingly been slicing through traffic at top speed coming out of D50 and it’ll stand out. Viney for his pure will to win. I think his sublime GF performance gets overlooked, but he was integral. Also McVee to get plaudits for doing a job on some big name players.
-
I’m all for it depending on what comes with pick 1. 4&5 is a lot to give up. Harley would want to be even better than I already I think he is.
-
I was concerned about this also, and I think it may be Tmac who fills the Melksham shaped void. He has always seemed to me to be a very frustrating player to play against because he doesn’t seem to be that good, but if you don’t respect his abilities he’ll bob up with 2-3 goals that you shouldn’t really let him kick.

This thread has devolved into a series of carp jokes.

But... but he didn’t?
-
Pretty sure he had 3 years anyway? Unless there was a trigger.

In all honesty, I can’t stop thinking that a version of the following will eventuate... I steadfastly believe we are in the box seat for the flag. Even if we only come close to a flag, as the trade period approaches the questions will be asked by some predictable media bozos like Robbo (ignoring the mechanics of how it came about) of “how is it that the premier (or close to it) can possibly end up with the number 1 pick? What happened to equalisation? It’s not working” Following this, the AFL will made a private edict to North Melb that they may have access to assistance only on the proviso that any early pick be traded to Westcoast for pick 1, enabling: - the number 1 pick to go to a team seen by the general footy public as “deserving”; - North to get the assistance they desperately crave and improve considerably; - Westcoast to get paid over the odds for pick 1, providing an engineered result where they are able to rebuild quicker than normal with multiple early picks they have not “earned”, somewhat avoiding a situation where the turgid performances roll on with no end in sight; - (Momentarily) rid the AFL of ghastly teams that turn out putrid performances on repeat & create effectively a number of bye rounds; - the right look and feel, as far as the AFL are concerned; and - ultimately probably the best outcome for MFC, saving us from ourselves and we end up using goldcoasts pick to snare us a combo like Duursma & O’Sullivan.
