Development is king - in some cases. Not here. OMac has some traits that allowed him to have six seasons with us. Not a bad intercept marker, a good kick for his size. A good kid with his head screwed on by all reports. But his lack of strength in the contest has always been a problem. His biggest deficiency by a mile though is his lack of pace. I've lost count the amount of times he would lumber in behind his opponent who'd take an easy chest mark, not to mention the amount of times the ball would sail/dribble past him for a goal when a faster player, heck any player, would have been able to get a hand on it. No development coach in the world can fix that. I'm not suggesting he goes out there and doesn't try his best, but he doesn't have the intensity required for AFL footy. That game he played in Cairns was almost Tom Gillies like in its badness and thankfully Goody finally saw the light. I wish OMac all the best, but let's face it. In the past decade only one MFC player has actually gone to a new club and flourished (Jeremy Howe). We overrate our players big time, in most cases anyway.

Doesn't surprise me. Was always an iffy decision at best to come here and now Jackson's arrival has put the final nail in the coffin. Slightly off topic but Jackson would have pushed Top 5 in the B&F if you apply his votes per game across a full season. Incredible for a first year ruckman. The club has a serious hard on for him so hopefully he can be locked away well past 2021.

I love Max Gawn. I think he's an absolutely brilliant ruckman and a terrific ambassador for the club. But he shouldn't have been in the squad for this season, let alone the final 22. He really needs to "do a Luke Beveridge" and donate that jacket to Steven May.

Nice to see Trac win, May rewarded with 3 trophies, and Langdon finish Top 5. It's a much better reflection of individual seasons then the absolute atrocity that is AA selection. Surprised that Viney got third, but he always polls well and his speech was classy AF. You sometimes forget how hard hub life must have been for certain players until you hear stuff like that. Pure class to start off with Wagners and Dunkley acknowledgement too. I'm not a Goody basher like some others on here, but he really is not a good public speaker.

Just goes to show much of a farce this team is and how it's picked on reputation and hype more than anything. I don't know who's on the panel but they clearly weren't watching many Melbourne games. Max Gawn - Injured for 3 games, well beaten in 2 (Port and West Coast), hurt and ineffective in another (Adelaide). That's over a third of the season he hasn't impacted. Has a high reputation. Clayton Oliver - some really good games and overall a decent season, but nowhere AA squad worthy. Plenty of games where he couldn't hit a target. Has a high reputation. Christian Petracca - no surprises there. Well done Trac. No May genuinely makes me angry. Not only does he miss playing finals yet again, but he can't get acknowledged for the Goliath year he had.

I thought I read Saad's main driving factor for moving on from Essendon is pursuit of success? Hasn't played a single final yet. Unless he wants to personally experience what it feels like to finish 9th next year after blowing a game to the Gold Coast Suns in Round 23, then I don't think we should be his club of choice.

So the Fremantle vs Bulldogs game is in... Cairns. On one hand I think that favours Freo. They are based there in the hub and know the conditions well. On the other hand... Cairns. [censored] that place. Seriously. [censored] [censored] that place.

Eddie McGuire has to be the worst commentator of all time. His job is to call the play. Instead we get a combination of cheering for the underdog, umpire bashing, expert analysis, lame Collingwood references, and snide remarks to an entire supporter base. Every time he's on. He can [censored] right off.

That was textbook Melbourne Football Club, except that we escaped with the 4 points. I'm just glad Trent Rivers hasn't read the manual.

Sam Weideman handballing to Jayden Hunt for the certain goal is one of the best things I've seen in recent weeks. Weed hasn't kicked a goal in a long time and didn't need to give it. Much respect.

Just about my all-time favourite Demon, and I rarely care much for defenders. An absolute Goliath on defense, who can also intercept, drive and kick like an elite midfielder. The best part is he has been here 5 minutes but plays as if he's personally experienced all the awful moments us fans have over the years. By all reports a massive leader off the field too. Pick 6 was unders!

Jesse Hogan on the way out at Freo?
Bang Bang Bang replied to Bizzell Blitz's topic in Melbourne Demons
Was textbook Hogan really. Beating up on the weak sides. I'd still take him back though. -
Win lose or draw, wasn't it nice watching a proper game of footy again? No stupid breeze, no torrential rain at inopportune times, just two teams going at it. I know Freo and Sydney were playing in the same conditions as us so can't be excused for the two losses, but AFL footy should never be played in Cairns again. Not up to standard.

Steven May is just about the best player I've ever seen in red and blue. There I said it.

I hate to criticise first year players, especially those that are clearly great kids and crack in like Kosi. But if you’re incapable of kicking those goals, you won’t have a very long career. Hope he can iron out that very clear deficiency in the summer.
-
I reckon the poster in question has a lower strike rate than a Bailey Fritsch set shot.

7 changes normally rings alarm bells but off a 4 day break I reckon it’s not a bad call. Not sure the Gawn-Preuss combo is a good idea. We tried that a few times in 2019, and it didn’t work outside of one quarter against Sydney. I think Bennell’s career is on thin ice. You can make all the excuses you want, but the fact he’s not one of the 7 ins and not even an emergency speaks volumes. Hope he gets 1 more year, but I am expecting that he won’t. Glad OMac is out. I’m sure he’s a nice guy and tries his best out there, but his performance against Sydney was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Maybe the worst since Gillies against Essendon in 2013. Never again please.

When finals are on the line... 2016 - lose to lowly Carlton with Dylan Buckley kicking 3 goals. 2017 - lose to lowly Collingwood. 2020 - lose to lowly Sydney with Justin [censored] McInerney (WHO?!??!?!) tearing us a new one. We are an embarrassment of a football club.

I rarely venture onto the GAMEDAY threads during the live action but how can I not with that [censored] [censored]? Nathan Jones, go have a shower son. You’re done. Forever. Oscar McDonald, you are a joke. Finals gone on the back of being towelled up by 16th placed side and Justin McInerny, FFS you can’t write this [censored]. Wait we can. 2016 and Dylan Buckley. My goodness. What a club.

The Darwin games last week were rubbish to watch because of all the sweat dripping onto the ball. Likely to be the same in Cairns? I’ll take 4 points in any conditions, but hoping we at least get a dry ball game.
-
Would be great if he was a few years younger, but I reckon his type can play on well into their 30s. I think we have at least 3 more good years coming from him. Anyway, after being introduced as “All Australian full back Steven May” on the Sunday Footy Show, he has now been included in SEN’s rolling AA side at CHB. Playing his best game for the season in a prime time match everyone was watching has done his chances a world of good. Like I said earlier in the thread, the media hype plays a huge role in the selection of this team. He deserves to be there in any case.

BRB, searching for Steven May highlights on Pornhub.

I’m glad someone in the media has FINALLY brought his name up, albeit an ex MFC player. The AA team is meant to be based on performance but media hype plays a huge role in it too. People are still talking about Max Gawn being in the mix despite him missing 3 games and playing two average games before that. Love Max but he shouldn’t be in discussions any more. Petracca is locked in and May should be the other Melbourne player in discussions. Perhaps Oliver if he finishes strongly.

Incredibly disappointing. I think at one stage in the third quarter they’d had 7 I50’s for 6 goals. Game over. I hope Melksham is made an example of in the review. He gave away one ridiculous 50m penalty, blatantly refused to put his body on the line in another marking contest, and allowed a shot at goal from 25m out to be touched by a Dogs midget. Simply not good enough from an experienced player and apparent leader. May is absolutely incredible and yet it looks like another season for him where he won’t get to play in a final. He deserves better frankly. We are wasting his talent, just like the Suns did. I mean, we could yet make it, but that would mean only losing one game from here. I have serious doubts. Looking forward to olisik, poita et al emerging after a few weeks in the wilderness. Yep olisik is already here on page 1. Almost as predictable as that performance...

I gave Langdon a bake on here after the Crows game and was widely panned. OK, I thought, I’m going to watch him more closely from now on. And now I realise I was an absolute [censored] for baking him. He’s an absolute gun! Winners on every line tonight. As good a performance as I’ve seen under Goody. The lid’s off!
