2019 Player Reviews: #26 Sam Weideman
Still young, but ultimately it was a disappointing year after a day fantastic final five games of 2018. Will be interesting to see what Burgess and the club have in mind for him over the preseason. Does he bulk up to be that pack-breaking power forward, or do they build the tank for the repeat efforts/leads. There’s a player there... fingers crossed he come out to play.

Brodie Kemp (drafted by Carlton)
Butcher was a lock for pick 2, twelve months out from the draft. Top 3 going into the U18 season were Scully, Butcher and Lucas... Things can change very quickly with these kids.

Recruiting a 3rd tall forward to find another 50 goals?
Does such a player exist full-stop..? 50 goals from a third tall seems like a lot. What are the 1 and 2 kicking??? (6 teams in the league had 1 player kick over 50 this year. No teams had more than 1)

And that's his choice - but just like any draftee, he goes to whichever club selects him. If he wants to behave like a free agent, he needs to earn that right through another contract with GCS. If he wants to enter the draft he can: a) Go to the club that selects him. b) Play a couple of years in the local leagues, then try again. I'm not just saying this as a Melbourne supporter - it is akin to draft tampering to attempt to scare away other clubs. The integrity of the draft depends upon honest engagement with the process.- Brodie Kemp (drafted by Carlton)
Because you draft a player who will hopefully play for the next 15 years, not someone who will step in and peak from year one (palmer, Rich, Lewis Taylor). Losing most/all of your first year is not the end of the world. Cripps managed just 3 games due to injury, Max King was drafted with pick 4 following a knee reco and Hogan and Petracca played no games due to back and knee injuries. Draft for the long term. There's also nothing to suggest that he won't be back to his best when recovered. If it were a broken leg, I'd have big reservations, but there are plenty of examples to draw on where players have returned from knee injuries to have exceptional careers. If he's there at pick 8, I say we grab him with both hands.- Jack Martin
Having a player of Martin’s talent fall into our lap is nothing short of a miracle. We have to take advantage of this. The memory is still fresh of Collingwood bullying Luke Ball through to pick 30 in the ‘09 draft. People have been calling for the club to grow a pair and take a stand... this is our opportunity.- Jack Martin
Was a complete blindside. We were going to select him in the Rookie Draft, Freo took him in the preseason draft which took place just before it.- Jack Martin
Jack Hannath. Burst into tears at training when given the news Fremantle had drafted him.- Jack Martin
If he nominates for the PSD. If he does, we should definitely take him. If he nominates for the National... not worth pick 3 or 6. Shades of Luke Ball.- Jack Martin
So now we get in Jack Martin’s ear...- Jack Martin
The 'pick points' comparison is ridiculous in any context outside of matching an academy or father-son pick. Suns would accept the actual pick 13 for Martin, not some combination of later picks that 'equals' pick 13.- Robbo’s Top 50 2019
I'm not sure I understand the angst on this one either... if he's assessing 2019 output, seem just about right.- Splitting Draft Pick 3

I’ve no interest in any of GWS’s picks in next year’s draft. If they want to move up to pick 3, then I’d be wanting 6 and a player. Unfortunately, I can’t see a player being traded this late in the game without being vetted.- The Dees/Roos Pick Swap Update Thread
Gonna get in early for what is going to be a very big thread... Huge win for the club! Masterstroke!- Farewell to Our First Pick in 2020
Last year we traded away a 23yo key forward for a 26yo key defender. Nothing to do with this years deal and Goodwin’s job was not under any threat at all. No panic. No trying to ‘save his job’.- Farewell to Our First Pick in 2020
So let's get snooty when it actually happens, rather than having meltdowns like in the 'Petracca requests trade to Geelong' thread..- Farewell to Our First Pick in 2020
Nothing to do with Goodwin trying to save his job - this is a long term deal. Bringing in another highly rated 17/18 year old will do little for our prospects next year. The real benefits of this, if we draft well, will be in 4 - 5 years from now. You keep going on about Goodwin being in a panic and trying to save his job, but this deal has little short-term value. If we trades these picks tomorrow for two 27 year olds, then you might have a point... but that hasn't happened yet.- Farewell to Our First Pick in 2020
Draftees aren't going to be a quick fix to anyones problems. Langdon, Tomlinson and better luck with injuries improves us immensely for 2020. This is better for the club. - Jack Martin
