    Round 1 Team

I was thinking the same. It's almost like the total output of Pedersen and Frost over the course of a game is equal to the output of one good KPF. Neither impose themselves over the whole game. But both have to play because one of them has to be a relief ruckman for Gawn.
  2. A lot of that's due to the high press being implemented by Goodwin. It doesn't allow the opposition backmen easy options further afield. On the flip side, the high press highlights the skill level of your backmen in one-on-one contests, zoning and when we've got the ball. In all 3 NAB cup games, Garland, O Mac and Wagner's poor skill levels and decision making have shown up badly. As an aside, apart from Sandy, the Fox commentators weren't that bad. They did mention that last year we turned the ball over deeper in defence than any other team. That should change with Goodwin's high press.
  3. I think you read too much into his answer. The journo asked him about rookie elevations and mentioned Wagner. Goodwin was non-committal about Wagner, and just said that we had a couple of weeks to decide.

    Round 1 Team

The problem is that we've got too many in the backline that cough the ball up. Lumumba will just add to the list. I've said it all preseason. Rotate Vince and Brayshaw off half back and through the middle. Both are cool heads under pressure with good disposal.

    Round 1 Team

Possibly, and as much as I'd like to see Garland replaced, it won't happen, so who does get replaced? During this NAB Cup, our backline has been our achilles heel, but I'm not sure that Lumumba addresses the problem.

    Round 1 Team

Assuming that all of the players above are fit, I'd be surprised if this wasn't our round 1 team.
  7. Though I can't see him being a prolific ball getter like Sam Gray, I think that James Harmes could be our bolter. He's got some X factor about him with his marking, and he's hard at the ball. I'd like to see him play as a wingman who can push forward and kick a goal. I rate him ahead of our new recruits Bugg and Kennedy, and also Grimes and M.Jones. Based on our last game against GWS last year and the NAB Cup to date, Harmes should be a lock for round 1.
  8. This exemplifies what a [censored] the Leadership Group is. It should be incumbant on every player to be thinking of the team things, and not left up to the LG. And why will 2016 be any different?
  9. Without knowing the exact criteria, I suspect that it led to Dawes and Lumumba being overlooked for 1 reason, and Dunn for another.
  10. And nothing has changed. The players are asked to vote based on a criteria set by Leading Teams. The criteria can be designed to achieve certain outcomes. People talk about the LG setting the standards off the field. That may have been the case 10-20 years ago when you only had a coaching department of 3. Nowadays, there would be at least a dozen including support staff. Everything is mapped out for the players. Just have a look at Luke Hodge. If he was the captain of a struggling club, he probably would have lost the captaincy. The club knows what he offers as an on-field leader, and the DD matter is quickly swept under the carpet.
  11. The players you mentioned played at clubs with outstanding on-field leaders. Every team has a leadership group, but you never hear anything about them aside from the premiership team. Clubs with top end talent will allow their leaders to drive the standards. Clubs with lesser talent will be driven by the coaches.
  12. "2 have spent the off season injured" - That doesn't disqualify you from the leadership group. "One was there before they came" - Grimes was still selected by Roos and Co. last year, and yet wasn't deemed best 22 in round 1. And Cross wasn't offered another year to play on despite his performances. That was Roos and Co.'s decision. As I said previously, with a struggling club, the title of being in the leadership group is a bit of a [censored]. Sure the captain has responsibilities off the field, but the rest will be chopped and changed every year.
  13. They just replaced 5 out of the 6 from last year. Not a good success rate.
  14. Every year most on here applaud the selection of the leadership group, and say what a good choice it was. And every year for the past 9, we've been mediocre. I really don't care what the players do behind the scenes. If they don't offer much to improve our on-field results, they're not leaders. When you are a struggling club, the coaches are the leaders, because the players would be given little free rein to make tactical decisions for themselves. They just play to the best of their ability, and hopefully inspire through their deeds.
  15. Who would you compare him to that plays with a top team and plays a similar role and took time to develop? There are heaps of small/medium forwards making a impact, and most of them made an immediate impact. I'll cut Kent some slack because injuries haven't allowed him to string games together, but I think he's overrated by many. As rjay said, he needs more than just aggression to warrant a game. For starters he needs to impact the scoreboard, because he misses a hell of a lot of sitters.
  16. I don't expect Trengove to be pushing for senior selection till mid year. He's only just started doing full training, so if you factor in all the footy he's missed, his preseason starts now.
  17. I did say that he will become a very good AFL player, just wasn't convinced that he had elite talent as a junior. His football smarts in the contest are fantastic and bordering on elite. I thought he overplayed the situation in the highlights package, but is making quick decisions at AFL level which is amazing. To answer your question, yeah I'm convinced.
  18. Morris is their best lockdown defender. Dickson kicked 40 goals last year, but he's interchangeable with one of the fringe players you've listed. Johannisen would walk into our team. Picken isn't a tagger as you mentioned. Hunter was fantastic after he broke into the side. And Suckling was a regular in the powerhouse team of the modern era, yet is interchangeable with no names. You seriously don't watch opposition teams play.
  19. You analysis is so full of holes it's not funny. Despite their age and experience, Viney, Tyson, Kent, VDB and Salem are clearly in our best 22. You may as well argue that Hogan and Brayshaw are young and inexperienced, so they're not a factor. The facts are that we were only missing Hogan, Brayshaw and potentially Petracca from our best 22. Based on last years form, Lumumba and Dawes are question marks. If the players we had on the park couldn't play cohesive football for 4 quarters against a severely undermanned Dogs team, it's of some concern coming off an attrocious 2nd half of last season.
  20. Based on our performances over the past decade, we're in no position to gauge what's left in the the tank. Passages of play on Saturday resembled some of the crap we dished up in the 2nd half of last season. It's laughable to think that we can just flick the switch, and she'll be right. That's the Saty mentality. Like I said, Saturday wasn't all doom and gloom, but it does show where we are at.
  21. The reality is that you are wrong. They were missing the top 15 from their B&F. Which players of the following aren't clearly in their best 22? Stringer, Bontempelli, Macrea, Wallis, Boyd, Murphy, Dickson, Dahlhaus, Wood, Morris, Johannisen, Picken, Stevens, Hunter, and replace Crameri with Suckling So now name the dozen players from Saturday who'd get a game ahead of the above? Apart from Libba, 1 of the ruckman (Minson or Campbell), 1 key defender (Hamling or Roughhead) and 1 key forward (Redpath or Boyd), none of the others are remotely challenging the above players for a spot in the best 22. I'm not slashing my wrists over our performance, but their second stringers moved the ball better than our senior players, which is a worry.
  22. Because those at the ground were assessing the players performance without factoring in the quality of the opposition. They wouldn't have recognised 75% of the Dogs players.
  23. Yeah, many posters did mention the weather being a factor. I'm at the stage where I prefer a win against an under strength Dogs than an honourable loss against a full strength Dogs. Consecutive games where we've come from behind to win will hopefully instill some belief in the team, regardless of whether they're NAB Cup or season proper.
  24. I actually think that Frost is a worse kick than T Mac. A good team can work around a good defender who is a poor kick (Dunkley, Dawson). The problem with T Mac is twofold. He's not surrounded by skillful ball users (Salem excluded), and in the 2nd half of last year, he was beaten too regularly by his opponent. I said last week that our backline wasn't structured with the right personnel if we intend to be a more attacking team. Dunn (good kick but little run) T Mac (run but poor kick) Garland (not sure what he offers) Jetta (there are many more creative small defenders in the AFL). On their day, they can shut down their opponents, but we need them to do more.
