Statistically the role of the lead-up or 3rd tall appears to have changed in 2017. In 2016, 8 players I'd consider a lead-up 3rd tall kicked 40 goals or more, and Watts kicked 38. In 2017, only 3 kicked 40 or more, being Menzel 40, Darling 43, R. Gray 47. It's arguable whether Gray is a small or lead-up forward, and whether Darling is a KPF. And Menzel is now considered expendable. The decision to move Watts on is as much about gameplan and structure, as it is about anything else.

T Mac has far superior endurance than Watts, which is imperative for a key forward, which Watts is not.
-
It doesn't work that way because clubs could rort the cap. That's why the length of the Buddy to Sydney deal raised so many eyebrows. If he retired before the 9 years, his salary is still included in the cap.
-
Definitely a slow news day. Tim Watson is a very funny man, and 90% of the stuff he says on SEN is with tongue firmly in cheek.
-
His contracted salary will still be included in our cap, so no relief on that side. But it makes perfect sense to free up a spot on our list. Even without the knee reco, he would have struggled to get a game this year, let alone next year with Lever coming in.
-
Watts roaming around Alberton a week before the trade period began, would have been a dead giveaway. You would still have the same questions being asked of the club and player.
-
Come up with a scenario on how the club should have handled it. Bear in mind that Watts had already been disciplined twice during the year for lack of professionalism. Watts was delusional to think he was shocked. There is no other way for the club to be "nice" when they are showing a player the door. If the player involved was Heretier Lumumba, there would be universal praise by the supporters. Watts being much loved by the supporters, has made it what it is.

That's weird given his brother left GC for the Saints.
-
Based on your logic, Richmond were 1 injury (Riewoldt) away from not having a forward line. BTW, Jack Watts is not a key forward. Our key forward stocks are just fine.
-
No it's not. Jack's father's comments are purely emotional based on what his son tells him.
-
Jack's old man coming out to defend his son is no different to Trent Cotchin's wife doing the same. In both cases it's cringeworthy. Like all of us, his father is not in a position to judge whether Jack trains hard or not. That is something that the FD can assess on a comparitive basis to the rest of the playing list. As Josh Mahoney said in the letter of reply, the club is bigger than the individual.

Spit roasted by BBBO and friend?
-
Watts has spent too much time reading this thread. He now believes that being a good kick is all it takes to make a good AFL footballer.
-
Jeezus, now Jack Watts is a Robbie Flower incarnate. With all that gut running you'd think he'd average more than 15 possessions a game.
-
2016 Sam Lloyd 2nd on the RFC goalkicking with 35G 13B. An even more accurate shot for goal than Watts. And won games off his own boot. 2017 Sam Lloyd played 8 games.Hardwick worked out that the benefits of having a smaller mobile forward line that applied pressure worked better than playing someone just because they are an elite kick. Getting rid of Watts is equally about how Goodwin wants us to play next year, as it is about his lack of discipline off field.
-
The difference is that we know that Stringer is on the market as opposed to the fictitious player that you are referring to.
-
Well Stephen Wells said that Watts' salary wasn't an issue for the Cats. They just couldn't give us what we want. If we have to pay part of his salary, it's neither here nor there. The FD don't want him, so if we have to pay $100k, it's immaterial.
-
Do you know this as fact?
-
Finally found some replacements for Danyle Pearce.
-
Had the same thoughts. Carlton are trying to low ball, and GWS aren't biting.
-
Not for the $600k Motlop is being offered by Adelaide.
-
Why would the Dogs want Schache when they are already top heavy up forward with Boyd, Cloke and Crameri? Even when Cloke and Crameri retire, I can't see Boyd and Schache being a good combo.

If you had of included the bolded sentence in your Goodwin critique, and detailed the flaws of the team under Roos, I wouldn't have come to the opinion that you are being excessively harsh on a 1st year coach. Roos left us with some underlying issues within the team's culture, which Goodwin is trying to address. And you are putting all the pressure on Goodwin with lines like: "We are in 'hashtag noexcuses' territory." But as you say, this debate is for another topic.
-
And yet you annointed Roos the Greatest Caretaker Coach ever. 2016 we had a full list under Roos and won 10 games. 2017 we were hit hard by injuries to key players and won 12 games. Even if we played finals, you would have given the credit to Roos.

To all the Goodwin critics, surely it's an endorsement of him, when the best out of contract player available in this trade period has chosen the MFC. Whilst money may or may not have been a factor, his future coach would definitely have been a major factor in his decision.
