My 3 word player analysis V Collinghood
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to joeboy's topic in Melbourne Demons
I am a big fan of Grimes but he was on Didak for large parts of todays game and was taught a lesson. Joeboy has it on the money. -

Thanks Freak. Can you confirm where Petterd played?
-
I agree Jaded. A couple of aggressive/courageous acts of play each week seem to make people blind to his overall game. He was disappointing again tonight.
-
Jaded you didn't comment on Robertson being dropped because he is your lovechild. Robertson was dropped for not following team rules/lack of endeavour/selfishness..... How you draw a comparison with Bruce is farcical. Give me a player who plays for the team and has iffy disposal over a player who doesn't play for the team any day. Who should they have replaced Robertson with Newton? I think your thoughts on him are pretty clear. The message of dropping Robbo was much more important than the potential short term difference he could have made tonight. Martin was played deep along side Bate in the first half with minimal success. Green on the lead out of square is what I believe we tried last qtr but its hard to tell when we butcher the ball like we do. The endeavour was fantastic, the polish will hopefully come.
-
No longer a need. All players have confirmed they are capable of kicking goals lying on their back. In fact they are better at it than he is
-
I thought I would have a look at Jones compared to Black and after looking at his stats agree I am being too harsh on Jones. His disposal rate and effectiveness of disposal the 3 weeks prior were all good. His kick to handball ratio was well up against the Hawks which I believe is his issue. He should be given the opportunity to prove last week was just a bad week and play to his strengths of handballing to a first option.
-
RPFC, you have misunderstood my point. Age should not be considered when reviewing a players individual performance on a given day. Age is an imperative along with many other factors when comparing players for team selection. This really comes to the question as to where will Jones best develop/improve on his deficiencies, that being disposal and decision making. I do not believe that he is best placed to improve this against the best pressuring side in the competition. I can understand how other may disagree.
-
What is the point of winning the ball if you give it straight back?I am judging him on his output the last few games. I unlike alot of posters do not consider a players age, previous playing history or draft position when reviewing their performance. I think Jones has shown improvement this year and for him to develop further he needs to go back to the VFL to work on his deficiencies and then be promoted when he is ready to apply them at AFL level.
-
Agree that they have their own deficiencies but I would play Bell or Bartram ahead of him this weekend. Noted that Bell has awareness issues but has been performing well in the middle and offers something different to Jones/Moloney/Mclean. Bartram wil be required this weekend I think to play on DalSanto/Hayes/Ball.... I dont think that Jones ia lost cause but just needs to go back and concentrate on working on his decisions and precision. I think that would be better at VFL level than against the rampaging Saints.
-
After some improved disposal and decision making early in the season he has really fallen back into old ways the last 3 weeks. 56% disposal efficiency last weekend is diabolical any way you look at it, even if you assume like Freak that an inside player will have low effectiveness by virtue of where and when they win the ball. Personally I would be dropping him this week purely to work on these deficiencies.

Mr Germans critique of young Jacks game Jack Watts – Although his preparation has been a little bit behind the rest of the group, he was very good. We pushed him up into the midfield and he showed poise, steadiness and composure in tight situations. He's still developing and the next phase for him is to take marks and kick some goals up forward. Other than that, he's coming along very well. Kicks 15, Handballs 7, Marks 7, Tackles 2, Assists 5

If trying to kick a goal whilst laying on your back is not lairising I dont know what is. The selfishness is not related to that act but the numerous acts where he put his own self importance ahead of the team. Examples: Having a shot from 55m out when he saw Sylvia 35 metres in the clear from anyone inside the forward 50. Doing the hard work in close in the third qtr but then rather than handing it off to two players around trying to break two tackles and swing a snap through the goals. Trying to mark running with the flight of the ball at the city end when he should have shepherded the ball through (I will accept he may not have known it was going through). And any of the numerous times he chose to hang inside 50 metres behind the play rather than lay defensive pressure. I agree he wont change and that is why the sooner he is gone the better before he injects such behaviour into the younger players.
-
Fitness or "getting back up to speed" does not affect ones choice to lairise or play selfish football. He needs to play for the team or go back to Casey and finish his career there.
-
IN: Bell, Jamar, Out: Jones, Petterd These are my realistic changes. Would love to drop Robbo but it wont happen. Jamar to come in and share ruck duties meaning Martin to play permanent forward. Bell has been in the bests playing as an inside mid 2 weeks in a row and deserves the chance to see if his form translates to AFL level. Jones is falling into old habits the last couple of weeks and not taking the first option and turning it over too often. Petterd needs to go back to Casey and try and become a midfielder as he does not work forward and there are too many options ahead of him down back.

Strong ins. Good to see Bailey stuck to his word and played Valenti for 2-3 weeks to see what he's got. Should never make those types of comments in a press conference particularly with knowledge of the players to come back in. Bench should be: Maric, Jones, Bennell, Bartram
-
Geary from StKilda got the nomination
-
Only realised this morning that he played three years of VFL. He must have looked like an infant in his first VFL year as he only looks about 12 years old now Grimes should be a shoo in if that is the case.
-
Nahas 5 goals will get the nod ahead of Grimes I would think.
-
I agree but Green and Rivers are definite in's and Bennell was only rested. He will not come back through Casey and I cannot see the other options.
