MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Sellar was one of 3-4 players who beat their direct opponent last week. How you can count at least 10 who were better is beyond me. -
Thank god someone sees it. Sellar clearly won his dual with Lynch one of very few that beat their opponent. I love how people judge Sellar's game before he plays and refuse to look at his role and how his opponent performed. In: Jamar, Watts, Jetta, Magner, Blease Out: Spencer, Bail, Nicholson, Sylvia, Kent
-
He gives his all and sticks tackles. That will do me for now.

INTO DARKNESS: THE BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
We basically played three down on field today as our mid sized forwards in Byrnes, Bail, Tapscott, Kent and Davey had no impact. I struggle to understand those that have bagged Terlich and Sellar today both beat their man under strong offensive pressure. -
Neeld Post Match - Platitudes and other nonsense talk
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Soidee's topic in Melbourne Demons
I can't believe he brought up our inexperience this week. I can't believe he mentioned we were weak around the contest after not bringing in Magner. He deflected answers for 10 minutes then Jones gave a clear account of what happened in 2. -

INTO DARKNESS: THE BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Nearly everything you have said comes down to effort and football basics. I have stuck with Neeld to this point and said I would review after the GC but his position just became untenable. The players either don't want to play for him, he can't communicate what he wants to them properly or he is and he purely can't coach. There was no excuses for today. He needs to be gone by tomorrow. Viney installed with basic man on man gamestyle with every player measured on effort and run and nothing else. -
Wonder what PAUL ROOS is up to these days???
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Pata's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think they quoted last night that Sydney have won 2 of their last 16 games at the MCG. Would Paul Roos really be the right person to coach a team who play majority of their games at a ground proven his game style doesn't suit? -
The first thing for a ruckman is to get first hand to the ball. The second is if you can't don't let them get a clean one. No disrespect to Pencil or Gawn but look at the hit out count and hit out to advantage for Carlton last week and then try and justify that Jamar is not clearly our number one ruck. Jamar has his faults and Gawn in particular shows fine promise but the two boys should still develop as our number 2.
-
EA my comment wasn't specific to you but anyway How many marks did Hampson take forward last week? Would have been nice to have a big tall bloke who could run well in straight lines. Do you think GC won't push their ruck forward this week? Maybe this means Sellar can play true key giving us he flexibility of moving Frawley ono a smaller type and offer some drive if we want to. Sellar is a good backman but people seem to not notice the difference when he moves from one end of the ground to the other.

Confidence breeds more confidence. They know where to run and do because they back their man to get the ball and to dispose it properly. They have more options to dispose to as their players run to space with confidence because of point 1. They have some great kids but their development is built by being nurtured by a quality core group of mature players. Its not the number of kids they play its that the kids have Bartel, Johnson, Selwood, Kelly, Enright et al to support them week in week out and they come in and play the supporting role. We dont have that luxury due to poor recruiting and culture that spans back more than 5 years. This is our major issue not the recent drafting. I can see we are trying to right this but as we can see it takes time and will have its ups and more so downs in the now. NB: Stevie J in full flight is probably my favourite player to watch.

I love how people bag Sellar who has actually played well every game he has played back. I would play him currently ahead of McDonald based on output.

Sorry just saw that in the presser. Agree a ridiculous decision.
-
Its not big news to elevate someone from the rookie for an LTI. I will not be surprised to see Mags as an in tonight regardless of no announcement of his promotion.
-
I don't need one more game to confirm his skills are not and will not reach an AFL standard.
-
Can someone explain to me what I am missing with Tapscott?
-
Assuming Magner not promoted In Dawes, Fitzpatrick, Jetta, Toumpas Out Grimes, Spencer, Nicholson, McKenzie
-
No thanks. The risk with this body is not worth the cost to get him.
-
But there was also a time when not many thought Thompson could coach, Bartel was a high pick that was too much of a plodder to be any good and Stevie J was an unfulfilled talent who didn't take football seriously enough. Lucky they persisted hey I get your point success breeds success but we need to breed it in the first place.
-
I also admire the Geelong way but do you think the below might have anything to do with their kids development? Geelong starting 22 players with greater than 100 games: Bartel (200+), Johnson(200+), Enright (200+), Kelly(200+), Selwood, Corey (200+), Mackie, Taylor, Stokes, Chapman (200+),Hawkins Melbourne starting 22 players with greater than 100 games: Jones, Sylvia, Frawley,Jamar, Dunn (debatable), Byrnes (debatable).

I dont think anyone is happy that we are getting flogged. The question comes down to are we getting flogged because of the coach and will a new coach make a difference. Will a new coach stop us getting flogged short term but not set us up with the best medium to long term opportunity to be a consistent finals performer and have the best shot at a flag.

I thought we were due about 8 wins this year to be on a true improve. I expected we would still gets pantsed by mature sides but be in those games a bit longer before we caved. At this stage of the season I had us at 2 wins and expected we would beat the rookie sides in GWS and GC and overtake Port (wrong there), StKilda and the Bulldogs. Based on what I have seen I am still confident that we will beat the Saints and Western and subject to having Dawes and Clark second half of the year a few more as they are surrounded with players that form the basis of what he is trying to achieve. I am willing to back Neeld in this year and wait it out because as frustrating as it is I can see the signs. Granted it is not translating into game end scores or possession counts but I can see the willingness to compete and run from the new players and those who will make up our team going forward. I can also see the wreck he was left with poor recruiting and lazy senior players resting on their laurels who he was willing to turf. I support the recruitment of mature players who aside from Dawes (quality player worth the gamble) and Pederson (we overpaid for a second tier player) cost us nothing. I can see the type of competitive beasts we have drafted in Viney, Hogan, Kent, Terlich and Jones and saw enough of Toumpas last year to know he will prove a quality pick. People who want Neeld gone believe that a new coach is the magic answer but seem to ignore the sh1te he was left with. To my knowledge he told those that hired him that this was no easy task and would take time. He should be given at least until the end of this year for a proper evaluation of where we are.

Elevate Jones to Co-Captain: Robert Walls
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Pates's topic in Melbourne Demons
How about everyone stops worrying about who runs out first and tosses the coin and the leadership group just all do their bit. This is what should be happening anyway. -
A bit of both. Our effort and run is much improved from first rounds. We cant sustain it but we're trying. Our disposal and decision making is appalling which ruins the effort made to get the ball in the first place.
-
Our effort was good today, our spread when they had the ball was much improved hence why they had to criss cross so often. Our issue is we dont get the ball enough and when we do we turn it over too easily with bad disposal or poor decision making and at no stage did we have a forward target that looked half dangerous.
