  1. Demonland was quiet over the past few weeks, drafting Sellar was obviously a ploy by the club to boost activity here.

  2. C'mon Barry P. and co, get on the blower to the managers of these top 10 GWS picks - nearly all of whom were from Victoria - and let them know we're interested in all of them. Might be hot air, might not be. At the very least it'll sow some seeds of doubt in the minds of these kids and get them thinking that there are better prospects for them elsewhere at the end of their first contract. Who knows who we might shake from the tree after the disenchantment of two years worth of thrashings. GW$ is now fair game on every front.

  3. Leaving aside Scully's comments which are reflective of his lack of maturity and his naievity, Demetriou's statement is a complete disgrace and unbecoming of a CEO of what should be the most prestigious organisation in Australian sport. Truly appalling.

  4. Redleg is our man on the spot at training and no doubt he and others will report in later but he phoned this report. The players were using the footballs and the drills look to be very organised and intense with lots of instruction and the players are working hard. A few of the boys are well muscled - Beamer and Jones are positively rippling. Cale Morton looks stronger in the body but not necessarily in the arms. Max Gawn is a man mountatin - Tom McDonald looks strong and Matty Bate looks amazingly fit. Redleg says that he thinks he might well start in the midfield. The players have dropped into five or six groups are doing new drills in the separate groups involving different coaches. The drills look well prepared and the players know the routine and order as each change of drills happens. Mitch Clark, Michael Evans and Jack Trengove were behind the goals doing drills, they're now running laps. Jack Grimes, Neville Jetta, Kelvin Lawrence, Ricky Petterd, James Strauss and Luke Tapscott are also in rehab and doing laps and Liam Jurrah is doing laps with a trainer pushing him along at the end. He looks a bit bigger and stronger. Tom Couch has a strong upper body and is training well. Absent as far as Redleg could see were Clint Bartram, Aaron Davey, Jake Spencer and Coin Sylvia and, understandably, there was no appearance from any of last night's draftees.

  5. Neeld said he CAN, not WILL, step right into the team. Get your facts right.

  6. My theory is that the plan for most teams to combat the so called press game, that is the current trend; is to kick the ball long. This will often result in kicks being taken quickly and under pressure. Obviously this will result in inaccurate kicks to (hopefully) contest situations. Therefore, the bigger, taller players will be used to bring the ball down from contests, to the teams advantage. Or obviously to mark when possible. If you have more players that can play this role, as well as being versatile enough to play other roles, then the better off you will be. I hope that that makes sense. And remember, as stupid as it may sound to you, it is just an opinion.

  10. Next year's draft is so much better in terms of depth and with GWS having a lot less picks. Plus, having a full year under the new coach will give our recruiting team a better understanding of what we need. No doubt we did the right thing by holding onto our compo picks for another year. It gives us two first round picks on top of Jack Viney, and if we draft well, it really could extend the length of our window by 2-3 seasons.

  12. Not to 'nitpick' but every pick past 40 is speculative, not risky. Risk implies high investment in the speculative pick but 54 is hardly that. From Pick 30ish to the end of the Rookie Draft - it's a lottery.

  13. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Nathan Jones will one day be the captain of the Melbourne Football Club. He has everything you look for in a captain: a great work ethic, plays every game, he's a consistent performer, loves the club and he's a great role model for the younger players. I have no idea why MFC supporters constantly criticize him. I think he is going to thrive under Neeld and become one of our best players.

  14. A selection that tells us something about where the new coach perceives we are at and the direction he wants us to take. No more skinny immature bodies with a four or five year wait for it all to come to fruition. I suspect that the idea is that whenever a Melbourne team runs out next year it will be a confronting unit. No excuses any more. That said, it will be interesting to see how many games Sellar plays.

  15. I have been trying to remember his games and I now recall that I thought he was pathetic when he played. He looked clumsy and was often out of position. Obviously others thought the same and he was delisted early for a high pick and a big bloke. Craig has obviously seen something and has influenced us taking him, even though he rarely played him when Coach at the Crows. I also wonder if with the amount of ruckmen we now have, we may be looking to trade a less agile, but in form, often injured, former Adelaide born ruckman back home at the end of next season, before he loses value. PS. We have become a very tall list in the last couple of years.

  16. There are a few things to note about Sellar: 1. He will be one of the most infuriating players on the list. He is only a 50/50 proposition when he has the ball in his hands, so will make a few mistakes that some supporters will hate. 2. For a key forward, he is a massive unit. Tall KPP like Clark, makes him very hard to outmark in a contest. 3. He's very quick. He can present up to the ball well because he has good speed. 4. He's a strong mark. He can often monster his opponent, but also good when he presents up at the ball. Certainly when he pushes towards the ball carrier, with his size and athleticism, he is very rarely outmarked by his man. With him and Clark, we now have two players up forward that can provide contests and bring the ball to ground against multiple defenders. His selection certainly makes the style of game we are playing clearer. And Watts, Jurrah and Howe are going to love it!

  17. I don't know much about him, but from the description I am happy. He's a great size at 188cm as a midfielder. They appear to have backed themselves to turn Taggert's talent into production. Sounds like a big bodied, contested ball winning player that uses the ball well, that they are going to try to move into the midfield. I was looking through the potential draftees before the draft and was disappointed that there didn't seem to be many decent big midfielders in our pick range, so it's great to see that they found one. At 36 in a shallow draft I'm happy that they are taking the talented player with a good attitude and backing themselves to turn him into a top line footballer in an AFL program. But time will tell.

  18. Twelve months ago, Tom Hawkins was going nowhere. Two months ago he won the Cats a grand final. The big fellas take time. Hopefully we can get something good out of him!

  19. I'm quite happy with the club taking a shot on Sellar. Obviously NC will have been able to give a thorough assessment of, not only his capabilitie and deficiencies, but also the reason he didn't crack it at Adelaide and his attitude to the game and training. To add to that, as others have mentioned, pick 54 in a lean draft isn't the top priority in a recruiters life, so can't hurt to take a considered punt really, can it? I must say that I do like the sound of 22 yrs, 196cm and 95 kegs. Welcome to the Dees James.

  20. At pick 54 in a poor draft, we're lucky to have found someone who will possibly play a handful of games. That's more than I expected us to. At least he's somewhat of a known commodity and comes with a ready-made body. (And if nothing else, he has made our list at least 30% more appealing to females)

  21. Getting out of Adelaide would be a priority for anyone that lived there I would expect. On a more serious note we have always looked like a small team and I have talked about this with my son forever; we always look smaller than the opposition and it seems like boys playing men most of the time.

  22. Has Tom made a freudian slip here? It appears he is trying to say 'he was unaware his father had been offered the job at GWS until he officially joined the club (in Sep 2011). This flies in the face of the evidence Phil was offered the contract in Nov 2010. However he then states 'It was after I was signed to the Giants that he was offered a deal'. If this is true then Tom signed with GWS sometime before Nov 2010. All I can say is 'i believe in Tom'.

  23. You don't pick Captains for their suitability in the media. I cannot stress that enough. You are not running a campaign or selling a product, you are trying to lead and instill confidence in a group of players.

  25. I can think of no more unco player I have seen than Lewis Roberts-Thompson. Manages to do some amazing things on occasion, but manages to amaze with his unco-ness even more often. I go to Swans games in Sydney with a mate, and usually spend half the time laughing at the balls ups from LRT.
