Anyway, I was really enjoying this until the "supporter" was asked it he was a member...pregnant pause... "actually, no, I travel a lot with work, can't get to many games, etc"

This made my blood boil. This is not about you mate, this is about the club. Forget about what your membership buys YOU and think about what it might to for the survival of the CLUB. It's not about YOU remember!!

It's the same issue with many MCC members - "I don't need a membership beacuse I'm already an MCC member" - yeah, we all know that (I am too by the way). That's just it, we don't care what it does for you, it's what it does for the club that really matters.

FFS, when will people start putting the club first. We don't have a hope otherwise.

i agree wholeheartedly. the funny thing is, i know quite a few mfc/mcc members, but i don't reckon i know a single mcc member who also has signed up to collingwood...and i know quite a few collingwood supporting mcc members...

First and foremost, I am a member. But I don't get irate with people who are not members. What has the club done both off-field and on-field to warrant new members signing up?

Off-field - Where has the marketing been for our 150th year anniversary? Where has the promotion been of our new coach and new football department?

On-field - How did the membership and corporate sales department feel about us tanking the NAB Cup game? And how did they feel about our abysmal form in the preseason games?

The same posters that bemoan our poor membership and attendances, are the same ones who state that NAB Cup preseason games mean nothing. These games mean EVERYTHING to a club like Melbourne.

I don't get irate with people who don't sign up either. It's everyone's choice, and not everyone should have to buy the right to support/follow/barrack for a footy side if they don't want to. The whole appeal about footy is that it's a relatively cheap passtime (though these days it's not that cheap) and it's easy to get passionate about. I absolutely despise the attitude of many around here that if you're not a member you're not a supporter. It's pure rubbish.

Having said that, I do believe that if you are not a member then you forgo the right to have your voice heard by the club. I'm sure that by courtesy they will listen to any supporter, member or not, but they're not obliged to. If you're not doing anything for the club, then it's unreasonable to expect them to do anything for you.

Mate, I said the exact same thing to my Dad - who is pretty much the sort of supporter that you describe. It's probably the one sore point me and my Dad share, because I give him hell for it whenever the football season rolls around. I try to reason with him - explain to him that the Dees won't exist if people like him won't re-join. Its not about the money for him, he can afford it no problem. Its about what he gets in return - and its bulldust. I will join every year, regardless of my financial situation or the clubs peril.

Over the decades Melbourne Football Club has been "White anted" by the leaches who joined the MCC

for the social status they supposedly get, even though they didn't barrack for Melbourne.

I think Melbourne footy club is owed big time by the MCC they have entertained those tossers for ever and a day and put many bums on seats for the major part of the last century.

And what do we get, well we get to share the ground we helped to build with a bunch of other teams and we get bugger all.

I think the club is doing an ok promoting the 150th anniversary. It is mentioned in every single article, mind you the articles are usually negative. The Age liftout was good and the Queens Birthday weekend is going to be the highlight.

Did people know it is Richmond's 100th year in the VFL/AFL? Probably not because they are not promoting it as well as Melbourne!

If you want to check the facts MFC pulled away from the MCC thirty years ago. The MCC is and has been a broader interest group than just MFC. For the record, the MCC contribute approx. $1m directly to MFC that they do not do so for other clubs. Your comments are just tears of bitterness. Get over it.

Rhino I don't know about your comment that we are the only club that get 1 mil from the MCC, what is Collingwoods ground deal with the MCC. Is that 1 mil you mention on top of our ground deal.

I am tired of hearing "If all MCC Melbourne supporters join up we would have 40,000 members" guess what they don't so we have to find members outside the MCC. Even if they did it would be at a serverely reduced membership last season was $40 I'm not sure about this season. We need 30,000 full MFC members outside our MCC supporter base, if we can pick up on top of that 3-4,000 MCC members with the reduce package it is a bonus. It is a cop out toalways bring our MCC supporters. Plain and simple we need to stop kidding ourselves that the by the MCC members taking a MFC package is enough we need new full members adults/family's/corporate/children

Get ready for some pain we have to re-build the club both off and on Field. It could be a tough 2-3 years but IMO we are heading in the right direction and seem to be getting the right people but only time will tell, I bloody hope so. If we don't get it right soon I will find it hard to get to every home game if we are playing in West Sydney, I don't think the Mrs will move to Bankstown she would be happy if we become the Melbourne Roo's though.

I grew up in southwest Sydney, and the last place place i would want the Demons to end up is in Blacktown, the place is a shithole. And, it is Rugby League heartland.

I'm an avid footy supporter and I don't barrack for the Demons................I'm still here, haven't been struck by lightning or anything else since I said that. I go to my team's AFL matches every week, and I have also joined my local VFL club - the Casey Scorpions and go to the Scorps matches each week.

While I will never renounce my AFL club loyalty, I will certainly take out a membership of the Demons if they move to Casey Fields and become Casey's AFL team. So will many people in the south-east. The sense of identity is greater in the outer suburbs which are more self-contained than the inner/middle suburbs which have great public transport, are close to each other and activities which are undertaken are spread across numerous suburbs.

The sense of identity, and the support this would bring to a local AFL club, should not be underestimated. There are many posters on this forum that I have noticed are strongly supportive of the Casey Fields option. Keep up the support - it is MFC's lifeline to the future.

Thank you sir or madam. Your voice sounds a little different to some of the Sandy supporters we have seen around here. I must say I support the option to move our summers to Casey. We have to think out of left field here, the traditional way of doing things has not worked for us one reason or the other.

We need to do 3 things:

Understand our current supporter base

Find a way we can attract a new supporter base not in our traditional "heartland" (where ever the fark that is)

Find out what WE can do for the club

1) Our current supporters - who are they and how can we attract them back to our games on w eekly basis even if we are loosing

2) New supporters - Is Casey a viable opption for us, will we get a Return on Invesment from a supporter point of view and to a lesser extent $$ point of veiw

3) What can we offer to the club to help them out, obviously the club has FTE's (full time employees) but can we assist them in any way, be it through ideas generation, through offering volunteer support, through corporate opportunites, sponsorship, whatever it is, lets us get a ground swell of Melbourne people to start offering our help to the club instead of pissing and moaning about our plight. Lets see if we can be part of the solutions.
