The Andy Moir Club

shane woewodin (post 2000)--very contreversial i know but he was great at receiving the ball and getting paid

if the award was to be given to somebody this year i would give it to none other than the great man BYRON!!

Might be something in that - having an award for the player who fell short of expectations the most - particularly compared to their share of the salary cap.

Nominees to come to mind lately include Pickett, Woey, Johnstone and (please don't let this turn into another thread about) Yze.

DD...please dont mention yze again lol...we are letting him prove himself this year

Can we add Darren Kowal to that list?

For years as a kid I watched him get the ball and every time without fail he'd run like wind until he realised he didn't know what to do with the ball and promptly sh!t himself.

When i was a kid he was always a source of both shame and fear in a tight situation, and then comic relief when we were getting soundly beaten.

I remember reading in the newspaper years ago about a bunch of Dee supporters who meet annually and award the “The Andy Moir Medal” for the worst performed player.

Does anyone know of them or if they still exist?

Check this out for a laugh.

I think it's time for me to bring out my little blue book and do the Andy Moir Story.

ANDREW MOIR

Andrew Moir from Mentone Grammar ...

Are you sure he came from Mentone Grammar, Jack?  I thought he was from Camberwell Grammar. No doubt you're quoting from a reliable source, though.

Dragged up from the vaults due to him being Hunt's Uncle...?

Taken from my little blue book in which I recorded weekly Melbourne results from my school days right through to the early 80s when I decided enough was enough.

I can't guarantee that he went to Mentone Grammar but it sounds more likely than Camberwell, only because Mentone was then in the club's recruiting zone.

Now that he has family in the senior team, someone who knows might give us the correct answer.

Rough call on Eishold. Yeah he choked it shooting for goal in the 1987 PF but had effectively stopped Healy and co the previous week at the MCG and in a final. Hell there have been far worse.

Extremely harsh on Prymke. MFC had alot of poor players but Prymke was not one of them by a long stretch.

For mine Chris Woodman and Damian Gaspar were the MFC players who I had absolutely no confidence in when they played and went near the ball. They never let my judgement down when they did.

Prymke was a class centre half back before his back injury.

For some reason I always associate Andrew Moir with Roger Ellingworth who ended up at Hawthorn. Maybe they started together.

Chris Heffernan is one of my least favourite Dees. never wanted to leave the Bombers and was insipid at the Dees.

It was too much fun growing up in Camberwell in the 70s and 80s as a Dees fan!

Can't imagine many Camberwell Grammar students living in the Dees then metro zones.

And Googling..   Demonwiki says he was recruited from Beaumaris/ Mentone Grammar...

Based on how old the original thread is, I'm surprised it's not on stone tablets!

I thought he was Harmes uncle?

Yes he had a prodigious leap for a small guy and when he actually took the speccy (probably one out of every six times he flew) the crowd went wild. But the other five times the ball would spill over the back and his opponent would most likely clear it up and rebound.

I think most coaches would have knocked that selfishness out of him. But he snagged a good goal occasionally.

Andy Moirs career wasstuffed because he played in poor sides and was forced to play in positions that didnt suit his 183cm height and frame.I firmly believe he would be a very good player today.

I follow Melbourne and coached Andy when he returned to his boyhood club Beaumaris where he starred. He is a man of integrity and I believe the people that started this award probably never played the game, aee cowards and should lower their heads in shame.

That's about as decisive a rebuke as it gets, in as few words as possible without just swearing insults.

I'm glad most of the posts in the thread are affirmations of Andy Moir being a decent hardworking footballer. And I'm glad my only contribution was to suggest a more appropriate 'relative to pay packet / hype' award.

And Mick, I'm also pretty sure I'm glad that I never stuffed up a game of football through laziness or selfishness with you as coach! (As much as it might have been a learning experience)
