Three important things to note from the Australian articles -

1. MFC financial restraints will be a factor in who is next MFC coach & so the selection panel's first preference wont necessarily get the job due to $$,

2. The AFL has concerns about MFC Admin (this is merely confirmation the relationship is not that good); and

3. If may be AFL who decides who MFC's next coach will be (or at very least will have to approve the selaction).

I note that there has been a high turnover of staff at MFC under Steve Harris BUT this is not a new issue. This has been a problem for at least past 3 administrations & impacts of both the organisation and us supporters. In my view this is as big a problem as MFC lack of on field success.

I have sense of deja vu about the Sheedy option foir new coach.. Smells a lot like the RDB push in early 80's -- that appoiontment of the super coach would "solve" all of MFC's woes. Truth is it covers alot of the other problems up in short term.

I am more concerned that because ot the increased indebtedness of MFC and Kangas to AFL that the AFL's agenda may be the deciding factor. If AFL think Sheedy will help get MFC off the critical list and help extract the huge latent support for MFC and therefore potential $$ for both MFC and AFL then they will help MFC get Sheedy to Melb. Promise of position after MFC stint in AFL for example (like commission job after period away from EFC - to make it appear not straight EFC nominee to replace Ron Evans who was EFC nominee - Mike Fitz did this). I think Dick Seddon was MFC's last nominee??

However, if AFL wants KS to be the face of the push to Gold Coast with Kangas I would think they would seek to push and nudge KS in that direction (would be subtley with no hands in the bak of course!). AFL might oppose KS to Melb in that case.

Fact that 150 of both MFC and the game is next year I think will favour KS for the MFC job compared with a first time senior coach as a lot of top end of town events etc. This will be an extra burden on whoever next MFC senior coach is & make the selection of the head assistant coach equally vital. Problem is that MFC in paying top dollar for head coach may well need to restrict itself re assistant. (Assume Rock went to Saints for more $$). Next year the new coaches priority needs to be on developing the young players and a sensible playing side rather than corporate events BUT looking impossible in view of 150th!

All the more reason selection process at MFC needs to keep moving quickly!!

Dont assume Kev will base his decision solely on money. Thats not the challenge that he seeks. Not to say he's going to go anywhere for love...lol

Such reports almost guaantee Pickett wont be there next year. we save 300,000 !! etc.

There are good coteries at Melb, as with many clubs. do you not think that if it was the difference between gettign Sheeds or not that a 'special letter' might not be put around !! esp in the 150th year !!

Its just another hurdle, not insurmountable. Lets see how things pan out huh!! ::

Where does Greg Denham actually say that we've cut our coaching budget, apart from in the heading? He says dollars will determine who our next coach is, which has been fairly obvious all along, but have we actually reduced our coaching budget i.e. over what we used to pay Neale?

as a p.s. i appeciate Byrone , if retained, wouldnt command the same as this year. just making the point that there are some savings here and there..lol keep in mind I cant imagine Danners was on Tuppence halpenny either !!

2. The AFL has regular meetings with the MFC adminstration and all other Club administrations to whom they provide additional funding. This does not imply anything about the relationship.

3. No. the MFC board will decide who is going to be coach. The level of AFL funding to MFC and its financial situation will be factor of consderation by a prospective coach.

The Sheedy situation is nothing like the RDB situation at all. There is a short term frenzy about Sheedy in the media following his termination at Essendon. Outside the wayward comments on this site there is no suggestion like there was with RDB that Sheedy will be the "silver bullet" to our problems.

Your comments about the Kangas and AFL agenda are pure speculation in search of a plausible fact. Sheedy does not need to Coach a financially stressed Club like MFC to become an AFL Commissioner. If he wanted it I have no doubt he would ultimately be appointed.

While the AFL has a lucrative TV contract requiring 16 clubs playing 8 games a week then MFC will continue to receive financial support while the Administration is operationally and commercially responsible. I have seen nothing to suggest that the Administration have been otherwise during an horrendous period on the field coupled with staff turnover off it.

In all seriousness we are talking about big boys here. They all know the drill. It would surprise me if before Sheeds walked into that room he didnt know almost as much about Mebourne as they do !! lol. Keep in mind Sheeds atacks things with a scholars zest.

Though money is an element, whther Sheedy decides on Melb ( and vice vera ) it will be about FIT, not money so much !!

Rhino, dont misinterpret my comments. They are not based on the Australian article.

My comparing the desire for KS with RDB situation is based on my direct observations of the Administration. This is also not unique to MFC (e.g. Blight going to Saints).

Clearly the scenario I outlined in regard to a possible AFL agenda relating to Sheedy is purely speculation BUT is is not in search of a plausible fact. Facts (1) AFL clearly has its own agenda re Qld push and willing to push hard (apporach to buy the NthMelb shares) and (2) clubs like NMFC and MFC are now more financially reliant on AFL than ever before, (3) AFL has to approve major changes (under funding deal and is in the club's constitution (which I reviewed as part of the MFC Board's review headed by Peter D.

Does not mean we need to be pessimistic about the outcome of the selection process only that we should recognise limiting factors.

Dont see Blues to be without some limitations as their financial plight is well known ( although Dick P has deeper pockets and more willing hands perhaps than others) & so no competitive disadvantage there. Bummers have $$ and structural advantage & whilst Freo have plenty of $$ the location is one factor which helps us.
