Has anyone else noticed during the Daniher crisis tht the club sems to be reverting back to the bad old days when everything happening at the club was accurately predicted and reported in the media before it happened?

I noticed.... not pretty... Caro who had it almost spot on yesterday now predicts that after todays meeting Daniher will get a farewell match and then a caretaker coach will be appointed.

Lets see what happens

What has been speculated in the media is not unreasonable and a plausible outcome from the events that have occurred recently.

Some of the journalism especially from Caro Wilson has been good.

Agreed. I think that the media loves finding a reason to give a club in this situation a good old bake. They can't, so they are simply telling the story as they see it. The club, Danners very much included, is handling it about as well as it can in the circumstances. All should be applauded.

No, this happens every time in these circumstances. Doesn't matter which club it is. 30 odd people working at the club? >30 players and then all their friends/relatives. None of this information (so far) would be considered confidential.

I agree the journalism has been good and not the normal cries that the club is in shambles. I was just suggesting that it also has been extremely accurate. The Age (including Caro) are on the money the day before official announcements.

If this has been a controlled leak to our CEOs old paper then this is not ideal but in my book its ok, or if it is coincidence then that is some damn good reporting... however if this is people telling tales out of class then it needs to be stopped quick smart.

Yes noted with great sadness. The MFC Admin has not handled the last week at all well and timing is disasterous!! All the old signs ot decisions on the runs and loose and unnecessary comments iin public.

Admin does not even hava a Plan A!

ND has acted with some dignity and derserves credit for that. Regardless of theeir personal differences either or both of P Gardner and S Harris should have been present at the coach's announcement that he was going..

Added pressue a tomorrow is their 3 hour slap up lunch at $198.00 per head and ND and Sheedy supposed to discuss tomorrow nights game etc. Now will ALL be about whether its ND's last game!

Was bad enough picking last days of the financial year for the event but now is an added disaster. No was it can go well now!

What are you talking about!

Time is disasterous, how so? Our season is finished, when would you have liked us to look at new coaches, in September while 3 other clubs are fighting for new coaches and we're staring down trade week? What could possibly be achieved by having Daniher stay until season's end?

Daniher and the club have done the right thing, they have remained honest and dignified and I would expect nothing less of both Neale and Gardner. They are true professionals.

I don't remember a better handled coach resignation in my life.

What are YOU talking about???? Unless you are less than 2 years old (no departues in that time!) to quote a famous ex tennis player and professional dummy spitter "YOUCANT BE SERIOUS!"

The off field and very public disintegration of the position of the coach with the Chariman and CEO has not been "handled" at all by the MFC Admin. It has been in free fall.

ND falling on his sword has saved all of us a more prolonged and potentially more damaging and dragged out separation but clearly it is is not an orderly and well planned ending. Sad for all.

I don't remember any well handled coach resignation in my life!

But seriously, while there have been a few stuff-ups with loose comments and some poorly managed frustration following the Richmond game (I expect more self-control and professionalism from a club president) I think the 'overall thrust' of how it's been managed has been ok. Only ok. Could have been better if the players hadn't made quite so many "we're going to make the finals and I :wub:Neale Daniher" statements to the media, too.

Let's just hope that the longer phase of adjustment is handled well, because Mark Riley is no Neil Craig and I'd be very troubled to see a St. Kilda style situation where players are seriously considering walking out on the club.

Which reminds me, at least Daniher didn't get sacked right after a dissapointing EF loss such as in 2004/05. He's only ever been under the pump when there has been a serious performance problem, namely 2003 and this year.

It'll be weird when Daniher starts coaching at another club, because he's been the Demons coach for as long as I've followed AFL.

I agree entirely... My post was in no way a criticism of the board and I am surprised at TonyMelb's diatribe.

The situation was inevitable after PGs comments on Saturday and every step from then has been handled as professionally as possible. (whether PG was right in letting it out in that interview is another question)

The media has been unable to stick the boot in to the club (despite some radio presenters doing their best) I have just been surprised at the accuracy of the predictions in the big paper. It doesn't upset me, it has been accurate and in no way inflammatory and reeks of a back door media prerelease.

I haven't commented on here for a while because frankly there hasn't been much to talk about this year but as someone who has had his disagreements with ND's decisions over the years, I think we have to agree that the man is a class act.

I reckon he is both a good bloke and a good coach and I loved the way he stepped forward to fight for the club a couple of years ago. I also think he has made some mistakes and reacts too slowly at times to things that blind Freddy could pick up.

This week, I would suggest that we have seen him at his best. Neale has taken the right course of action to ensure that there isn't a period of unnecessary destabilisation about his position at a critical time in the club's fortunes. We have to rebuild from here and Neale has bravely accepted that he is not a part of that rebuilding, accepting the responsibility for the team's performance this year ( whether or not that is justified ). These are the actions of a true leader and I wish him all the best in whatever he decides to do in the future.

Let's just remember some of the great games we played over the past 10 years, forget about the poor losses, genuinely thank Neale for his contribution and get on with the future!

You gotta be kidding Jaded. Paul Gardner's comments on Saturday were dee-plorabe. I have respect for Paul as the President, but he has gone down a few notches for that. Plus, why wasn't Paul or Steve Harris at Neale's press conference yesterday?

If you want to sack someone, sack them. Don't announce a review where they have to re-apply for their own job.

Correct. Daniher announced he would coach until the end of the season and should have been allowed to do that. Paul's comments on Saturday were a disgrace and forcing ND out after tomorrow nights game is pathetic and a slap in the face for someone who has done so much for our club. ND did the right thing by putting his hand up and allowing the club plenty of time to find a new coach. There was no need to push him out immediately.

It could be a possibility that Neal had a bit more time to think about the decision too and decided that there was little point going on. There's been a lot happening this week, so his initial decision could have been that of standing down, which then progressed to well sooner rather than later. Dunno, just a thought that it could have been two-way traffik there.

The only reason this hasn't turned into a very ugly affair is bc of Neal's decision to stand down, otherwise it would have been a [censored]-fight to the end, and that's him alone, not the board and deff not gardner.

its clear that the club has a [censored] culture of the board wanting to be seen and heard.

tell me, name the president of west coast. or sydney, or brisbane. i cant. because they shut the [censored] up, let the coach do his job and get on with it.

the club also has a [censored] culture of attempting to play football against the bottom team and losing. complacent [censored].

i think danners has acquited himself fantastically. well done rev and good luck. i just hope you dont go to essendon, win 3 flags and we all have to deal with the taunts of essendon fans.

As stated earlier, any change in coach is going to have some turmoil / fallout........espcially after the coach has been at a club for so long.

I don't think the club could have handled things any better.............and after hearing the press conference on SEN today from Gardner and Harris, I am pretty positive about the direction going forward.

Regardless of what people think about the goings on this week, we do have some very savvy, and professional people running the club at present. I'm rather "bullish" about the future!

That might have something to do with all 3 clubs having won flags over the past 5 years!

No need to fix things that aren't broken!!!!!

Daniher has had absolute autonomy to run the football dept for a long time, and to "get on with it!"

If there was a premiership in the mix, this wouldn't even be a topic!

food for thought..

invariably in situations like this had there been even the slightest scent of nastiness and / o r underhandedness th emedia would have been all over it like flies to [censored].. They would have blown it up and gone to town with it.

Anybody read anything ? Doubt it . No..the focus is on the search for a new coach, not any disharmony, split or disintegration of Melbourne

I'd say MFC has shown its quite capable, its resourceful and purposeful; hardly the floundering leaking sieve some would have it.

Given the propensity for situations like this to turn into an absolute bun fight, this has been handled extremely well.

fair point

but what about freos? adelaides? ports? bulldogs?

it just disturbs me that 3 weeks ago it was all good and roses, ha ha we beat collingwood and adelaide lost to 3 others by not much, lose a half to richmond and its goodbye coach, after they change the review criteria at no notice.

Well everyone knows Smorgan.......he was everywhere when they swapped over from Rhode to Eade.

We have just seen the Freo president Rick Hart all over Chris Connolly like a rash in the media.

Port have been successful recently, as have the Crows, but if they were floundering, I'm sure their leaders would be out in the media more, and being pursued by the media more over the status of the coach etc.

3 weeks ago, it wasn't all roses.....we were 0-9.......we got players back, and won 2 games and looked good. We come out after a break and get flogged by the bottom team.

freo's is that bloke who's had his mug in the news saying connolly will be finished if they don't make top 8 and bullies is smorgan isn't it. but really, it is irrelevant.

i don't think it's been roses, richmond just quickened the process that was invariably coming.

when it comes to presidents, i bet most people could name most of the vic teams but not the interstater. the only vic team you named was the bulldogs, and i reckon most people would get smorgan...

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
