There's no rule saying you have to stay inside a certain box, I'd be disappointed if they weren't thinking this way.

Me too. Ultimately I want the best , most motivated, coach available. I don’t just want a public, respected figure like Buckley unless he IS also the best coach.

Hehe I ended up watching the first two episodes on YouTube last night. Minder was more something my parents watched. But it was kinda good - better than the 25 footy shows on Monday night :)

Interesting looking back at when Collingwood were in a similar position back in 2021. President gone, Coach gone, List Manager gone, CEO wrapping up, board at war with the future president.

Bunch of coaches names being thrown up in the air (Don't think McCrae even gets brought up) and Caroline Wilson of course very concerned about the situation at board level.

Also hilarious watching Eddie go on a massive rant immediately after saying he'd stay right out of it. Can you imagine the reactions on here if Roffey went on TV this week and started talking about what a mess the club was?

Just like to say that Fagan succeeded isn't an indication Daly might/will.

Daly could turn out to be like his predecessor in the Lions GM FD who then became a senior coach, David Noble.

Should be a secondary consideration, a long way behind who is the most likely candidate to have this team playing a "brand" of football that gives us a chance to win another flag. Call me old school, but I reckon winning games attracts and retains talent, not appointing big names of yesteryear.

Given the way the best sides play game has shifted considerably since Buckley left the AFL, that his last team underperformed and played a dated style, and no second time coach (besides, ironically, Malthouse) has had any success this century, this is hardly the safe option many fans on here seemingly believe.

My concern exactly. We don't have the supports in place for an untried assistant, who has job hopped between clubs and only recently expressed a desire to be a full time senior coach. Has been a forwards coach, GM of Footy, Head of Footy Department...I don't want some experimental plan to see if a bloke can coach full time. We have seen it fail and it has the potential to set us back a decade.

Very true.

It's just another realm to be looking into I guess. Hopefully we can still provide a better environment than what North was back then.

I also would like to think we can provide a better environment and I think we are much better positioned than North. But unfortunately I see some off-field similarities that may hinder an inexperienced, or even an experienced coach.

But hopefully, an experienced coach would have the time and a good chance of 'managing upwards'.

Haha, if you think we don't have a greater chance of keeping senior players that may be weighing up their options by naming someone like Buckley because of his standing in the game, the fact he made multiple finals appearances and was within an inch of a flag, ie (aura), then you well and truly do have your head in the sand.

Yeah, that's all good and well, but I see him on the tele and hear him on the radio!

He has a "good footy brain" - one which an untried assistant couldn't possibly match.

The side he took over in 2011 was completely turned over by 2018.

I agree Buckley got the top job too early and made mistakes, but after that he effectively rebuilt the side and improved as a coach drastically.

He shouldn't be the only candidate but I certainly wouldn't rule him out.

Shame, I was just strapping in for a fun little back and forth.

As you appear to be his most vocal backer on this site, I was eager to hear the compelling reasons (that I'm obviously missing) why he should be the favourite for the job.

Some of the people giving pot-shots to Buckley based on the 2018 Grand Final result, also lauded what Longmire would do for the Club. By those metrics, I wouldn't be particularly enamoured by a 20% W/L record in Grand Finals (1 - 4), including losing margins of 81, 63 and 60 points respectively.

If Buckley is the best choice for the job, then we take him. I DGAF where he's from or what his AFL history is.
