Your stat is padded by the smackings we gave North and West Coast.

If this is referring to me, you’re helping me out. We’ve quietly enough put 85 on GC, 90 on St Kilda (who love to stifle their opponent) and 99 on the Dogs (bad defence but a much better side than us overall). Plus everyone gets to play the bad sides (and whilst we got North twice, we got smacked by them the first time).

My point really is that I doubt many on here would think of our 2025 as being high scoring to the point of being 10th overall.

I think jnr was responding to my post that we have averaged 92 points in our 7 games since the bye

But your point remains valid, everyone gets to play the bottom sides. And besides our high scores in the game against the roos and Eagles was a function of our method and being attacking.

Is also note that that strech of games included our game against the blues which was played in wet and windy conditions.

I5s interesting that we are 10th for total scores but are also 18th for accuracy.

That inaccuracy could well have been the final nail in Goody's coffin.

Transition stats measure how often chains result in a score or an inside 50. Chains include all kick-in chains, all clearances, and intercepts with at least one disposal in the chain.

  • Chain To Score %: proportion of all chains that resulted in a score.

  • Defensive 50 To Forward 50 %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive 50 that resulted in an inside 50.

  • Defensive 50 To Score %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive 50 that resulted in a score.

  • Defensive Half To Forward 50 %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive half that resulted in an inside 50.

  • Defensive Half To Score %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive half that resulted in a score.

  • xWin %: win probability based on expected scores.

  • Swing: difference between expected margin and actual margin.

  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.

  • +/-: total score above or below expected score.

  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.

  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

There it is, in all its glory.

59 points from turnover, 51 points from chains starting in defensive half.

These would have to be season highs Wheelo?

It's our equal highest points from defensive half after we also had 51 points against West Coast last week. It's our fifth highest points from turnover:

  • 12.10.82 v Syd, R11

  • 11.5.71 v WC, R21

  • 10.4.64 v NM, R18

  • 9.8.62 v Bris, R10

The problem for us, as always is we gave up 67 points on turnover.

That's the game right there

(Funnily enough they scored 49 point from their defensive half, 2 points less than us. Taken together- ie scores from turnover and scores from defensive half - you get 6 points, which was the margin).

Geez the Dogs are good at clearance. I know we were terrible, but 85% of their first possessions resulting in a clearance is crazy good.

Thanks DD some really good signs starting to emerge up from 2024 numbers, Max is still improving, Claz and Salo having better years, Tracc still below his best but better than I expected. Bowey Pickett, Chandler, Rivers, Disco, Langford, Lindsay all on the rise and what about Culley’s first two games.!!!

It's too early to go the crow DZ but yeh those first two matches from JC are a beauty.

We might have found one here but keeping a lid on it ... for now 😁

There is an issue with the AFL website with player ratings and a bunch of other stats not currently available for games this round. If it gets resolved, I will update the website and re-post here.

Wow. Killed from stoppage. Very rare that's the difference in the game. -41 points.

Didnt feel like it, but does speak to how bad we set up today.

Edited by Jjrogan

Can't recall the last time we lost as badly as we did today and it wasn't almost entirely due to scores from turnover.

Also how about that third quarter. 64% in forward half, 20 inside 50s to 7, yet outscored 3.3 to 2.0. Classic.

The issue with the AFL website has been resolved so here is the full stats file post.

In response to this post from @Little Goffy on the gameday thread:

Max Gawn has a curious pattern of gathering a large number of hitouts in the first quarter, particularly in the first 20 minutes or so, and then it tapers to a more reasonable pace for the rest of the game.

I suspect that if his first quarters were his overall rate, he'd be averaging close to 60 hitouts per game.

What strikes me about that is that it is clearly not a matter of fatigue as his other stats tend to pick up the pace later in the game - the around the ground intercepts, marks, and general involvement all push hard.

So here's a challenge for the detailed stats experts - is this a genuine pattern or just a coincidence of a few games I noticed it in? And how does it play out on things like his @WheeloRatings figures? Does Gawn in hitout-mode outrank Gawn in around-the-ground mode?

Here is Max Gawn's quarter-by-quarter breakdown for a few key stats this season:

His hitouts only drop off marginally but his intercept marks are clearly highest in the fourth quarter and his contested possessions are higher in the second half.

In terms of comparing "hitout-mode" to "around-the-ground" mode, I have looked at his disposal and hitout numbers in each quarter of games this season. From this rudimentary analysis, his best quarters are when he wins a lot of the ball.
