Hey @WheeloRatings , thanks again for providing all these stats over the journey. Much appreciated.

I am wondering if it would be possible to get some stats on the players delivering the ball the most i50 and the result of their delivery. I read last week Trac has kicked the ball i50 this season 45 times and only one of those kicks has been marked. That's not my memory. I would be really interested to see which players kicks it most i50 in the team and what the mark/retention rate is for them. Thanks IT

Edited by Its Time for Another

What is noticeable is that our players that are better by foot have a higher ratio of kicks to handpasses as compared to those who have previously been prone to bombing it long (or rushing their kicks forward)

So Oliver, Petracca, Sparrow, Langdon, Rivers, Viney & Gawn are all handpassing the ball a lot more along with using the short pass a lot more

Kicks/Handpass ratio for those players who have excellent kicking skills (against the Lions)

Overall Kicks/Handpasses 228/142 (Total for the team)

  • Kozzie 14/7

  • Melk 11/0

  • Salem 17/3

  • Lindsay 14/5

  • Langford 11/8

  • T-Mac 12/4

  • May 14/1

  • McVee 11/2

  • Petty 8/2

  • Fritsch 5/2

  • Windsor 6/0

  • Chandler 7/4

Those in and around the midfield are sharing the ball a lot more either by hand or by short passes

  • Oliver 8/15

  • Petracca 13/18

  • Gawn 12/10

  • Langdon 10/15

  • Rivers 14/10

  • Sparrow 9/7

  • Bowey 12/10

The buy-in to playing short ball (or small ball) as opposed to rushing kicks forward (or long bombs) by our midfielders is at last starting to happen

For those who were looking for the new game plan, it's starting to evolve

But whether we can consistently adhere to sharing the ball more remains to be seen (even against the Eagles we had 70 turnovers often caused by errant kicks forward)

That one extra handpass can often diminish the chances of the need to rush kicks forward (or the long bomb) ... to do that requires all the players to do that extra bit of running at pace (to provide the option)

Player & Team Rating
Form Guide - Rnds 1 to 5 vs Rnds 6 to 10

Our team Rating over the last 5 weeks indicates we are now performing roughly on par with our 2022 & 2023 rating and almost 3% up on 2021.

It also does not include Lever who would more than likely improve the rating somewhat.

image.png

This comparison includes players that have played two matches or more (in total) in both blocks of games in 2025.

Tracc would appear to be back! In the last five rounds he is roughly 1% up vs his 2024 rating. A big turnaround from his first five rounds where he was approx 28% off 2024.

An amazing lift from the skipper as well!

image.png

< Subbed out > Subbed in

In his last three matches, Viney improved 78% on his poor early season form. Jumping 11 places from 15th to 4th. More impressively, up 22% on his 2024 rating. A change of role and time played up forward? His average tackle count inside 50 has increased by 4 tackles per match in his last three matches. His average tackles also up by nearly 8 per game over this period. He was also averaging just under a goal per match in those three matches vs zero goals in the first five rounds.

Thanks DD that is a huge team improvement, we are fighting our way back towards our 21-23 team performances lead by our superstars but strongly backed up by our younger brigade and newbies, that is so satisfying.👍😁

Judging from he Brizzie game the new game plan May suit Fritta better, faster more accurate kicking game, he was really good and strong when he came on on Sunday.😁👍

Agreed DZ.

The most involved, committed and sharp i've seen Fritta in some time barring the odd small patch of quality here and there over the last few seasons.

I'd like to see the FD leave him as sub from here, match ups and injuries allowing.

I picked a great weekend to come over to Melbourne (from Tasmania) - fantastic performance. I had to leave a few minutes early though to go next door to Rod Laver Arena to see Les Misérables to cap off a brilliant day.

The 42 shots today was the most for Melbourne since Round 8 2018 v Gold Coast. Also @Its Time for Another I am still hoping to get those stats for you - I just haven't been able to while on holiday.

  • xWin %: win probability based on expected scores.

  • Swing: difference between expected margin and actual margin.

  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.

  • +/-: total score above or below expected score.

  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.

  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Love the 82 points from turnovers. That is the right scoring avenue.

I cant believe we were still above our expected score with all the sitters we were missing.

Amazing stats. We absolutely dominated and finally put the score on the board. Yes post clearance contested footy was huge. Points from turnovers. Must be one of our highest ever in recent times.

Harry Sharp 8.3 player rating in one quarter. He definitely made a contribution.

@binman I know Aiden Johnson had a negative game by the ratings but I thought he again brought the contest, the bump and bullocking work and valuable 2nd ruck contests. His tap ons and intercept pressure brought us 3 goals.

It's funny you say that SONS. I just posted this in another thread:

You can't underestimate the importance of the key forwards bringing the ball to ground (well, ot would appear some can).

Its really their most important metric - which by the by points to a weakness in the Champion Data player ratings system, ie it doesn't factor in things such as adherence to role and importance to structure.

Petty and AJ were both much more influential than their ratings suggests.

+23 from post-clearance possession and in particular +12 from post clearance loose-ball get is quite astounding as the Swans are typically excellent in this area.

Score from turnover is an amazing result, as is 40 points from defensive half considering the season average is 26.4.

But the one that I loved was scores from stoppage, 43 from all stoppages and 15 from centre. +9.6 and +1.8 on the season averages respectively. With all things clicking into gear with the gameplan, this area would be the thing that sends things into turbo mode. If we lift the average by 10 points a game then I feel we could outplay a lot of teams on the back 9 of the season. I could be thinking too simplistic but this would be like maintaining good pressure.

Anyone have the for and against points ranking for the last 5 rounds across the comp? we'd be close to top 4 on the for side, but suggest we are mid table for points against.

Round 11, 2025 MCG - Demons vs Swans

Holy Swan feathers folks. Our best Team Rating in over two seasons. That being Round 7, 2023 vs the Roos with a 78.9

A great day for all loyal Demon minions i'm sure.

The only down side, the overly loud doof duff in the breaks. No doubt showing my age but kill off that rubbish and bring back cash at the G and we got ourselves a fab day out.

Interesting to see that Bowey's having such a good season he copped a bit of a defensive tag from JJ. Big compliment from the oppo coach & panel.

Clarry's second best day out of the year behind his fabulous 6.4 vs the Kangas in Rnd 2.

His companion in crime, CP5, having a decent day out also coming in 7th and managing to keep his return to 2024 form on track with a very decent hit out on his milestone.

Kozzy continuing on with his best season so far in the red & blue.

Maysie's form of late a bit of a worry. Dropped away a fair bit. Maybe worth managing this week with T-Mac available?

Salem coming in at No.1 and deservedly so. Not too often you see a HBer / part-time mid top the ratings...

22 effectives @ 71% efficiency, 1 contested mark, 1 mark inside 50, 1 one percenter, 6 clearances, 1 rebound, 4 inside 50s, 4 tackles, 12 score involvements (only pipped by Kozzy with 13), 4 intercepts, 402 meters gained, 3 turnovers and a goal.

On to the Aints at the red centre!

I’m surprised Kossi is 9th for pressure points on the team. It feels like he creates so much more pressure.

Kossi is like if you’re in the surf and you notice a shark fin 100 metres away, you feel the pressure. 🏊‍♂️🦈

Kossi should have +50% bonus points as he’s that preying shark that can eat you somewhere in the vicinity

Brilliant wheelo - just in time for the pod (and now I feel complete)

Our +19 for contested differential inside 50 was an all time team record for the club.

Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 11, 2025 vs H&A Season 2024

After our best performance in over two seasons, our Team Rating has jumped a little from last week (to 69.88) which continues to see us on track to play finals in 2025* and presently ahead of our Team Rating in Seasons 2021, 2022 & on par with 2023. No need to mention 2024.

image.png

* Subject to the successful return of Viney along with reasonably minor impact from injuries for the remainder of the season (roughly no more than about two players presently inside our top 22).

The rocketeers this season so far...

  1. Turner up 19 places from his season 2024 ranking

  2. Bowey up 10 places

  3. Kozzy up 9 places

image.png

* Played less than two full matches

Thanks DD love these player ranking stats, how gratifying to see Max, Clayton, Tracc and Ed all upping the ante and seeing Bowsa and Kozzie rocketing up the charts, Salo, Riv, McVee back to their best as well as Lindsay, Langford and Windsor consolidating themselves in our top 18.

Daniel Hoyne mentioned that Disco Turner's performance for the last 6 rounds has him in the Top 50 players in the competition 💪

  • NON-MFC: Round 12

Round 12 kicks off with the Brisbane hosting Essendon at the Gabba as the Lions aim to solidify their top-two position against an injury-hit Bombers side seeking to maintain momentum after a win over Richmond. On Friday night it's a blockbuster at the G as the Magpies look to extend their top of the table winning streak while the Hawks strive to bounce back from a couple of recent defeats and stay in contention for the Top 4. On Saturday the Suns, buoyed by 3 wins on the trot, face the Dockers in a clash crucial for both teams' aspirations this season. The Suns want to solidify their Top 4 standing whilst the Dockers will be desperate to break into the 8.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.
