It's time to accept that Van Rooyen won't be a star. I don't read replies or reactions.

Thats really incredibly arrogant.

"This is my statement, but don't dare comment on it, because I won't listen to anyone and my fingers are in my ears."

Perhaps consider whether it's best to post on forums buddy! If you aren't going to listen or put your words out there for scrutiny, why post in the first place?

For what it's worth and keeping to the conversation, I think Van Rooyen will be ok, he might not be an A grade player. He just seems completely off with timing, and his hands are currently concrete. His kicking isn't terrible, and he's competitive in the ruck. Improvement is not always linear. As a comparison, I don't think Jye Amiss is progressing anywhere near as well as he looked like he would be last year either.

Happy to hear your thoughts ? 😁

Tbh .. the only part I think would/should have been different is Kozzies goal.

We weren't winning that game.

IMO
We didn't get anything going our way (or take the simple opportunities) that allowed us to get momentum flowing. Kozzie's goal, the free that Jiath got when one of our players went for the mark, and we got done for a tunnel or push I think, but the replay showed no contact on him except his leg connecting with someones head and him tumbling.... We should have been 3-5 goals up at 3/4 time, but we were wasteful and the umps missed some clear decisions.

Not saying that would have changed the way the final quarter played out btw, but not taking opportunities as they come hurt us badly.

Have we picked up a couple of tall fwds yet to fix a problem that I'd say 99 % of supporters agree on.

That our fwd line has been lacking a big bodied , uninjured, experienced tall player that can compete for the Coleman.

Perhaps we are missing a decent full forward and chf.

In any case our fwd line has cost us possibly two flags and has been a problem very much unprofessionally ignored by the club for three years in a row.

Have the powers to be woken up and done anything about it in the last four months?

Try the last 32 years! We have only had 2 decent key position forwards since then (Neitz and Hogan).

And even now when it is patently obvious that we still don't have a good KPF, the club refuses to look at recruiting one in the mid season draft. Maybe we are gun shy after all the failed attempts at recruiting and developing one

2 questions

A. Do we have a mid season draft pick?

B. Are there any even half decent KPF talls available?

C. (third of two questions) Kenterfield, according to some Casey watchers, seems to be developing quicker than one may have thought, especially given his off season illness - is he built like a KPF, even though he has been playing in defence this year? He was recruited as a hopeful KPF as I recall. I appreciate he will be well underdone atm as I don’t think he has had even one AFL preseason.

I do hope your right about Jvr.

I mean he's shown more than patches of very good form in the past and been a great set shot.

Maybe he toned down his agro due to suspensions and that has had an influence.

I don't know what's happened to him. It has been hard trying to establish oneself as a fwd and then being dragged into the ruck.

A lot of hope for him to be another David S but it's a pretty high bar. And Roo isn't as big.

So much pressure on some young kids that it's easy to lose confidence.

He seems very down . Even his accuracy has gone awry.

He's not a stand and deliver pack park . He's more a mark from lead fwd and I think we never have enough room or delivery is often too slow.

I just hope he becomes at least a decent serviceable player at this point in time.

But expectations have definitely been tempered.

A. Not currently - can change
B. A few worth looking at in the VFL (McMahon, Garoni, Mason) and in the WAFL (Clarke, Hunter, May)
C. Unknown quantity with uninspiring previous goalkicking stats in the WAFL

How about our forwards start leading to the ball carrier or to space

Our forward line is pure amateur hour and wouldn't be tolerated at suburban level. Pathetic

On top of that we hoof it forward to compound the problem

4 years of absolute dross ... it's as if we are trying to sabotage our chances of winning

Got a text during the game yesterday from a pal who supports Hawthorn

"Any danger of Melbourne kicking it properly into the forward line"

Must not have watched us much since 2022.

Our approach to goal is totally unprofessional

Goodwin made an example of JVR & Fritsch but it's time he did the same with a couple of mids

We've got nothing to lose as finals are out of the question anyway

Edited by Macca

It's interesting that the player who is incapable of kicking long bombs into the forward is also our best exponent at kicking the ball into the forward line

30 metre low trajectory kicks is his go

Our mids could learn a lot on how Spargo goes about it ... so we need to get the ball to Spargo more (when he's fit to go again) Perhaps as the last link going forward?

The same thing was said about Watts years ago when he was playing as a high half forward

I wouldn't mind a clone of #4 on the list.

Our scoreboards might look a lot better.

Watts is much maligned.

Right now I'd take a Watts in a heart beat. Selfless, knows forward craft , runs all day , leaves nothing out there. Knows where the sticks are.

Who's on our list that's a better forward..at the moment ??

This is the type of player we need to look around other clubs and lure.

Would like to see May play forward , never going to happen. What about trying Howes up front we have nothing to lose.

Wow that’s some serious revisionist history

Dropped by every afl coach he ever had, be they permanent or caretaker

He was not ever interested in being a professional afl player right until the end, and then the end of his career was curtailed by the first - only? - significant injury of his career

He wasn't perfect... far from it.

But who do we have today ??

Going swimmingly huh.

Watts might have made it if we were able to use him as an outside player (old fashioned receiver) ... a bit like how the Pies use Nick Daicos

But alas, we had a myriad of issues just putting a competitive team together in Jack's time with us

But those kicking skills were sublime

But back to Spargo and his F50 entries ... I always feel comfortable when he kicks it forward but either he needs to get the ball a lot more or we somehow get it to him more (as part of the chain)

i'll take these three who lined up for on monday:

  • fritsch - 161 games with 55% winning ratio, and 266 goals

  • van rooyen - 48 games with 52% winning ratio, and 62 goals

  • melksham - 238 games (124 games for the mfc) with 52% winning ratio, with 199 goals (127 for the mfc)

across the course of his career, jack watts finished with 174 games with 33% winning ratio, 161 goals

watts was a patchy footballer who never worked hard because he wasn't made to work hard; he got by on natural talent and very little application

Milkshake... a gem. But hesnot a kpf.

Fritta... turns up when he likes. To my minds eye doesn't quite get it. Play like 21 gf .. marvellous. He's playing off his own coattails imho. Can't be relied upon.

Jvr .. two trick pony.. a better ruck than forward.

Hardly a safer pair of hands kicking for goal than Jack Watts... for all his faults.. still put him or a clone in our fwd line in a heartbeat ..

watts - 161 goals from 250 scoring shots; 64.4%

fritsch - 266 from 427 shots; 62.2%

still know who i'd take...

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
