How many reviews have we had or need now? seems like we have had a few.....yet we go backwards, something has to give, well multiple things.

@Macca If Yze had to "call the shots" then that doesnt speak highly of the coach does it. Also, if the players are lazy, then why does the Coach keep playing his favourites? Also, we were having a lot of the same issues with Yze and before his too.

@Dr. Gonzo Nailed it.

I know it's an unpopular opinion but I don't understand the hate for Lamb on here. The established players he has brought in since 2021 haven't been much chop - but with the gamestyle we had in 2022-2023 and the off-field issues that plagued our club since 2021, I don't think that's his fault. Players didn't / don't want to come to Melbourne.

He seems pretty shrewd when it comes to trading for picks etc.

The way he's traded for picks is just to throw any and all picks after 25 at a team that need some points, often with a future first on top as well.

It's hardly genius trading.

We're going to need to start finding some guys deeper in the draft over the next few years. Hopefully JT has a few he likes.

This.

Once we can actually connect well with our forwards, it will make things easier for our young guns like JVR and Jeffo. Then you can start dreaming about luring a KPF.

they are not young guns just not up to it

Well at the time I saw his move to the bench as a demotion but hey presto, we won the flag so it didn't seem to matter in the end

But nonetheless, Yze took over a number of the duties from upstairs as those duties can only be conducted from upstairs

By the way, if I could be bothered, there were many comments here back in 2020/2021 about the move involving Goodwin & Yze

But everyone could see the change so I don't understand the stupid denial that it didn't happen

So Dizzle accuses me of lying when in fact Dizzle is the one who is lying

I don't need to show a source as there isn't one. Not a visible one anyway

In 2020 Goodwin coached from upstairs

In 2021 Goodwin coached from the bench whilst the newly appointed Yze was calling the shots from upstairs

This is a fact. Irrefutable

So I see that as demotion or at least having certain powers taken away from the coach

That's what I said here originally and I stand by what I said. Mine was an opinion of how I believed Goodwin's role had changed (and it did change)

I never quoted any sources

If you want to believe that Goodwin's role didn't change from 2020 to 2021 you'll be ignoring the truth

So trot off and go and bother someone else

By the way, you owe me an apology as I correctly forecast that we'd end up with 2 first round picks in the 2024 draft which included snagging Essendon's first round pick

You went off your head and accused me of making stuff up. You got it wrong (as per usual)

So show some character and apologise

I think if you had changed the word "fact" to "your opinion" and then no-one would have had a problem with what you said.

A demotion would mean that Goodwin was no longer the head coach, this was more of a change of format. So it probably isn't right to say it was a relegation to the bench and you can probably see why people would say that you're making it up.

I don't have a great memory of trivial arguments from 8 months ago but apologies if it makes you feel better.

Beg to differ.

JVR is very competitive and he is one of our most accurate kicks. He may not be perfect but at the very least he should be a B+ or A grade player in a functioning system.

IT IS A FACT THAT GOODWIN COACHED FROM UPSTAIRS IN 2020 AND WAS ON THE BENCH COACHING IN 2021

AND IT IS ALSO A FACT THAT YZE WAS MAKING MOVES FROM UPSTAIRS AT THE SAME TIME

IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH FOR YOU???

And that was a pea-hearted apology. You can do better than that

I still have some hope for JVR but I reckon there's a pretty hard ceiling on his game. We can't rely on him to be the main man unfortunately. Not sure where we find a genuine key forward to fill the main role. An indictment on the FD that they haven't been able to find someone to play that role in 4 years.

What about the horrible long term contacts he has burdened the club with? Viney, Lever, Langdon are here until 2028.

But he can still be a very good Robin to our future Batman (whoever ends up coming as the true KPF).

And one thing that you can be confident about JVR, he will kick goals.

That's more like it! Those are actual facts. Stating that Goodwin was relegated to the bench as some kind of demotion is not.

Come on mate, what do you want me to kiss your shoes or something?

He's a better mark than he's shown this year (still a double grabber) and Imo looks too bulky this year as opposed to how he looked the previous two years. Still reckon he'd be a much better player in basically any other team that can actually hit a forward target.

That's a big call.

I strongly agree that our system is broken and desperately needs to be changed. I'm not sure JVR would be a B+ in any system.

I don't mind him - I don't necessarily think he's a bust - and I'd love to see what he and numerous other under 24s can do under a different regime. But I do wonder if expectations are unrealistically high.

I'm not your mate, bud

My view that Goodwin was demoted was an opinion. Not a fact, but damn close to a fact

Your football knowledge wouldn't fit on the back of a postage stamp

It's looking like we need reviews to go to the bathroom at the moment.

I'm sure the last one didn't come cheap either, would have been good to know a bit more about what it actually uncovered.

Sorry. Walked all over this post without reading it. My thoughts exactly.

I find it very disappointing Layzie, I'm no expert but you'd have to think these review would cost somewhere in the 7 figures range, we have and are going backwards and the guy is still employed as a consultant all while this is happening. Feels like its not only the coach who selects a job for the boys each week, but its happening higher up too, Jones and Green included. We arent a wealthy club so when we make these decisions, they need to count the first time. Bring Jackson back, he was respectfully ruthless.

Across the course of Goodwinโ€™s tenure Iโ€™ve watched countless pressers, interviews and behind-the-scenes clips of him. I cannot say that I have ever been impressed or inspired by his use of language or his ability to convey any kind of message beyond the realms of cliche.

Iโ€™m not suggesting our club - or any club - requires a master of eloquence instructing the players. In fact such a thing would be a quiet disaster. But a club does need a coach to convey complex thoughts with simple and effective messaging. This requires a coach who has a strong grasp of language at both ends of the spectrum.

Our players have looked bereft of inspiration for some time now. I am convinced that Goodwin, for all his absolutely well-meaning and valiant efforts does not have the skill-set required to turn this around. Itโ€™s my observation (and I acknowledge thatโ€™s all this is) that he has chosen โ€œcamaraderieโ€ as a means of psychology. All good and well when a team is young, fit and firing but not much help when a team is in the collective doldrums. In fact it creates something far more insidious- the feeling of safety.

Yes, and that is how it was perceived (by some) at the time

Which is what I've been saying. Maybe people have just forgotten but at the same time (2020) there was another thread about Goodwin (Heavy heart et al) and many were welcoming the addition of Yze upstairs with Goodwin on the bench

The supporters here wanted change and in the poll on Goodwin about 85% wanted him sacked around the Sept 20 mark. And that is the truth

So I wasn't the only one seeing Goodwin on the bench as a demotion. I just can't be bothered trying to find the appropriate threads back then

2 minutes ago, Bowserpower said:

I did, but my words have been twisted

Me saying ... "Goodwin was relegated to the bench" is not a statement of fact, it's an opinion

"Goodwin coached from the bench in 2021" is a fact

Can that brain of yours figure out what I've just said or is it too hard?

Haha.. old mate Macca changing the goal posts and narrative on the run when called out.

Funny stuff.

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturdayโ€™s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFLโ€™s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.
