What was the conditions like yesterday? Haven't watched the game.

I played yesterday at my local league level up here in Albury and I can't remember the last time I played in such atrocious and horrific conditions.

It non stopped rained 24 hours prior, then during the game it was not only showers but the wind made it feel like we were playing at Mt Buller.

I read that a country league game in Victoria had to be abandoned because of players getting hypothermia.. guaranteed we weren't far off!!

Conditions were terrible. About a 4-5 goal breeze down one end then heavy rain set in after half time and made it a contested slog. Not ideal for keys. He should have had 2 goals to his name and that would have been a great return. Regardless, the fact he could get his hands to the ball and pick up as many disposals as he did in the conditions is a credit in itself, particularly coming off covid.

Whilst not suited to the conditions what on earth did we see in Kentfield? Mind you, didn't seem to bother Bell. 3 disposals. Tracking the same as KFW. Barely seems VFL standard.  Jed Adams is better, as one would hope, but is a major concern.  4 disposals as a defender in a losing team is inexplicable.

Adams went off injured in the 3/4 I think? Didn't return. He was serviceable with his defensive work, though doesn't accumulate the footy.

Kentfield is combative and strong.  Injury interrupted wafl season and nil afl pre-season so reserving judgement for now as he's essentially a first year player and 1.5 months into an AFL environment. With Ben Brown and schache probably coming off the list at the end of the year I'm guessing we wanted to have another developing fwd option.

Looked pretty miserable early, but then in the third quarter, it really got nasty.

Had trouble seeing the players and the rain was coming in sideways. They turned on the lights, but it didn’t make a lot of difference.
I remember a game in the 80s when we had to run undercover from the golf ball size hail and lightning. Both teams and umps did it simultaneously. Self-preservation.

A little bit harsh, maybe?
I thought he was one of the only defenders that tried to defend a player. The rest were basically accumulating intercept marks. Consequently, a lot of dolphin goals were over the back.

He did run through one of their guys in the middle of the ground early in the third quarter. You don’t usually hear the sound of a hit that loud. Might have copped an injury then.

Saw something different with Kentfield yesterday. One of their enforcers tried to rough him up after he fairly tackled a player. Not sure exactly (because of the rain) but I thought I saw him flip the guy over and connect with a few left and right crosses. All of a sudden the tough guy was trying to make peace. But, as I say, I couldn’t really be sure.

Overall, I thought they played a good, tough brand of wet weather footy. Could’ve been a lot smarter with it though.

Another thought.
Perhaps it would be better for his development if Adams was put on a half back flank, or wing?
He almost won the grand final sprint last year, so he’s obviously pretty quick. And he has a decent boot.

I just think that competing with Tomlinson, Turner, Hore, Howes and Schache, probably isn’t that great for his development.

Maybe but really as a defender he is primarily competing against his opposition forward (not his team mates)

He isn’t without potential but in a team that is losing more weeks than not he really should be able to accumulate more possessions

From my observations he seems really quite timid and lacks confidence to take the game on and demand possessions when his team is moving the ball forward

Tommo runs to receive always so maybe he doesn’t feel like he can take that role - but yesterday with no Tommo or AMW he surely could have taken a more active role - but didn’t

He will need to have a big pre season and start showing more consistent output if he wants a career at AFL level imho

Fair enough but I can't recall a game that Adams has impressed.  He rarely gets much of the footy and looks slow. Kentfield is able behind a player like Bell. His chances of 'making it' are negligible.

Someone needs to explain to me why we would overlook Jack Bell who is under our nose to go out and recruit Fullarton and Kentfield? Better ruck than both and showed today he is capable of kicking goals in ordinary conditions.  At 23 year of age its got me beat!

Just asking - does Bell actually want to play full time AFL?  Not everybody does.

Seems like he enjoyed his last stint on an AFL list

Previously the number five pick in the 2019 rookie draft, Bell enjoyed one year at St Kilda before being delisted at the end of 2020. He may not have been in the fold for long, but the ruck says he learnt plenty from his time at the elite level. “It was a great experience,” Bell told Casey Media
