I thought I our defensive structures held up really well all game and our intercept game was in full effect with 12 marks for May and 11 for Lever. There was really no other way for Richmond to score other than hope for a turnover when we were sucked up the ground. We simply just didn't execute in that first half but you can really just put the memory of that in the bin. We know that's not a reflection of this team's skill level and I think you and I know this team a little better.

May and Lever outstanding, Rivers and T-Mac did their job. Howes continues to go unnoticed, no news is good news in the role he plays.

To see Trac heavily tagged and try hard to work through it rather than crack it was very encouraging and he did come into it in that second half. Clarry looked better but maybe still not quite 100%.

Here's an interesting stat:

Inside 50 count was dead even at 50 each, we had 26 shots 52% and they had 16 32%. I just wanted to show that while we've got our issues going into 50 and makikg the most of chances, this is a reasonable return. 

How much better is this side with Kozzie in it?

Thought Max deserved the BOG, a lot more hitouts to advantage this week and great around the ground stuff. Ed Langdon was great, maybe one of his better games for the year.

I think we're a work in progress at the moment. It's very much to the finished product but you can see what they're trying to achieve with the way they are moving the footy. The measuring stick will be right there next week but I do think we can go up a gear. Coach Eddie will be satisfied.

    124.6% or 6.1%

    I'm sorry but this is such a nuff nuff argument. We weren't playing Geelong. We were playing an injury depleted low rung opposition and we knew that. Not to mention, you don't think Yze is a smart enough coach to bring the game down a few notches to make it an arm wrestle?

    Yes, play like the first half against Geelong and we won't score much and will probably concede more, but next week is a totally different game.

    The field umpire was right there. He saw the hit and instead of issuing a 50 to Fritta who had the ball 45m out, he just watched the players go after MP. Pathetic umpiring.

    Today I learned that Ralph Smith from Richmond doesn't get the Bobby Hill full-name treatment but is actually a bloke named Hugo. I'm still not sure about the umpire Mattstevic though.

    I reckon we look back and pin point this as the turning point in our forward line structure. Turner can play, he leads up, finds separation, has sticky hands and is faster than JVR or Petty (or so it appears).   Real prospect.

    But then there are opposition players in the hole in our forward 50. Much better to let them advance up the ground and then have space to go back into. IMO anyway.

    It's a speculative decision Jeremy, but I'm sure the club is stoked that he chose to stay in Melbourne, and I don't reckon he'd be on big bucks for the duration of this contract. He's an above average second ruck when needed, and when he gets his timing right I reckon he'll be a very dangerous option in the forward fifty going forward.

    Our percentage is now 126.1.

    Some would have been thrilled if we won that game with a score of 113 to 70.

    Because if we played like that against (insert some supposedly unbeatable team here) and all that.

    But we win 85 to 42 (kicking 10 in the second half mind you) and despite gaining 1.5% more it's somwhow a fail.

    Like you get a percentage boost or an extra point for style.

    We missed finals by 0.2% in 2017.

    I understand the logic to a point. We're generally looking to make the opposition turn the ball over in the middle and on the wings where there is space to rebound and hopefully kick to a more open forward line, sure. But I don't think any forward whose in the vicinity of an opposition player disposing of the ball should just 'let them advance up the ground'. I'm sure you didn't mean this in that way. I'd just like to see better intensity when there's opportunity to force the opposition the hack the ball out of defence as apposed to clean chains of ball movement which is happening too often.

    No matter how good our team defence is further up the ground. More strings to our bow! We need to score in multiple ways and if we can cause opposition mistakes deep in forward 50 we should still be trying to turn them into scores.

    I think the new game plan is great with trying to create more spaces in forward 50 but its just not realistic that we will be able to do this consistently in every game. We will need to play the forward half pressure game still at times depending on matchups, weather, fatigue etc.

    Just quietly: a player like Pickett you can't measure on available stats, but he's on the way to another 40-plus season (Cyril achieved that twice in his career). Fritta will also likely be in the top six or so for the Coleman by the end of the round. And Petracca is on track to once again claim the goal assists title.

    I thought we found two forwards tonight.

    Turner goes with out saying , but Bills two main attributes are tackling and foot skills which make him a perfect small forward

    Disgusting first half everything went wrong. To the boys credit they stuck to their guns and had a really good win. Gawn deserved the Hughes medal absolute champion. Great games from Turner, Lever and May also. Massive game against Geelong that will really show where were at.

    Less, because the ratio will be smaller.  When I do the subtracting and the adding, our percentage would be 124.6 instead of 126.1

    Heh.  Binman's had a pile on of replies.  Sorry!  Ah well.  The dee-lights of living 17 hours behind the times.

    Anyway, I'm glad to bank the four points and the percentage boost.  Better than a loss.

    Saying that gives no credit to the tigers. They came to win and negated guys like Petracca in the first half. But in the end it is difficult to keep good players  out for four quarters.

      The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.     • PREVIEW: Brisbane

      And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

    • REPORT: Hawthorn

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

    • CASEY: Footscray

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
