"We want to be like Collingwood"

* That WASN’T the case.

** But you didn’t attend (Chinese whispers etc.)

*** Kate NEVER said this.

**** I didn’t shut Dr Gonzo down. I simply told him I wasn’t prepared to read his post because it started with “this is incorrect.” And as I stated to him…. I know what I heard Kate say.

Edit: I don’t know why I bothered responding to you. You’re belligerent and combative, which is bad enough in and of itself but is further compounded by the fact that you’re only this way with a select very few posters. The word gutless comes to mind.

You responded to me first.. 🤣 like you constantly always do, then somehow find yourself raging over the littlest and most sensitive things ever that somehow seems to trigger

Absolute drama queen is what comes to mind with you. Every single thread is ruined by you turning small discussions into major personal hissy fits.

Not all about you champ lol

Anyway, make sure you cheer loud?

Im sorry DD, but Roffey did not say that our supporters dont cheer loud enough, it was quite the opposite.

Again your BIL must not of heard properly or heard what she said. Collingwood supporters are loud all the time, she wanted our supporters to be loud all the time because it helps lift the spirit of the team. She said there is a lot of Die Hard supporters still out there and wants everyone to get along to games to support the team.

I was there and strongly disagree with anyone that says there was frowns and groans about this, in fact there was a bit of hoo rah as soon as she said the end part ( about coming along and supporting the team) She also congratulated every supporters loyalty for growing YoY.

She also literally prefaced what she was saying about being like Collingwood and not to take her out of context.

id love our supporters to be as loud as pies supporters, albeit tame the swearing bs down lol

Spot on, Tracca. You were there, @Katrina Dee Fan was there, I was there. @Longsufferingnomore was there. We heard exactly what Kate said.

Others who were there who dispute this either weren’t listening properly or are letting their disdain for Kate misinterpret her comments.

That covers people who WERE there. As for everyone else… they heard diddly. They’re taking what was written weeks after the event by someone who also wasn’t there as the truth.

As I said WCW, I like Kate, and I was absolutely listening properly. I was on a table right in front of the lectern, the same one as her.

When chatting to her afterwards she admitted she’d chosen her words badly and wished she’d had her time again.

It’s OK to show a modicum of objectivity. You don’t need to blindly defend every single little thing the club does.

There are those on here who won’t hear a good word spoken about the club and there are those who won’t hear a bad word spoken about the club. Both groups are pathetic, and as bad as each other. Debate each topic on its merits for gods sake. See grey rather than only black and white!

I stopped reading after this.

I know what I heard Kate say.

This column approached Roffey to provide further context. And the president did exactly that.

“Collingwood members set the benchmark when it comes to achieving huge – and let’s be honest – noisy crowd attendances; and that is a benchmark we want to chase,” Roffey told this masthead.

“The crowd at a game makes a huge difference - especially a noisy crowd giving their team 100 per cent support. I’m not sure supporters realise how much difference it does make to players on the field - but it matters a lot to them. When the MCG is full and our members are making lots of noise it gives the players a massive lift out on the field.

“I will keep encouraging every Melbourne supporter to play their part by getting to games, by being louder in the stands - and getting behind their players whether the team is five goals up or five goals down - because it does matter.

I'll preface this by saying I like Kate personally and think she's done a great job as President.

But I was there and I can tell you the remark went down like an absolute lead balloon on our table and those surrounding ours. Eyebrows raised all over the show and was discussed critically at length afterwards.

And for those saying it wasn't, for some reason, it absolutely was in regard to the noise supporters make.

I found it an extraordinary misreading of the room, especially when talking to the most died-in-the-wool supporters the club has who have paid a fortune to be there, and also after the Maynard incident and Collingwood supporters' subsequent reaction.

Not that I don't believe what others present have to say but I appreciate this comment because it clearly shows that the whole room wasn't unanimous in how they took what was said.

I and many others on DL are getting tired of certain people who constantly spout the "I was in attendance at *insert event* and you weren't so I know everything and you don't know anything" routine.

Appreciate your take.

Don't listen to me, listen to Kate.

From the outset I’ve said I can’t read the article because it’s behind a paywall, therefore I can only comment on what Kate said AT THE SEASON LAUNCH. And that’s precisely what I’ve done.

From the outset I’ve said I can’t read the article because it’s behind a paywall, therefore I can only comment on what Kate said AT THE SEASON LAUNCH. And that’s precisely what I’ve done.

Here I are excerpts of the article below.

The Scoop has since learned that eyebrows were raised at the Demons’ season launch at the MCG two weeks ago when president Kate Roffey declared Melbourne wanted “to be more like Collingwood”.

This column approached Roffey to provide further context. And the president did exactly that.

“Collingwood members set the benchmark when it comes to achieving huge – and let’s be honest – noisy crowd attendances; and that is a benchmark we want to chase,” Roffey told this masthead.

“I believe Melbourne can and should be a big club on and off the field. We have seen our membership grow to record numbers over the last few years and are on our way to reaching 75-80 thousand members, and I want to see that number keep growing. We have always had a great rivalry with the Pies on the field. Let’s add the membership-number challenge to that great rivalry off the field.”

Roffey went on to explain that her remarks should be interpreted as a call to arms for Melbourne supporters. In 2023, the Demons had 70,785 members to Collingwood’s 106,470, while the two clubs’ average crowds, including finals, were 43,860 for Melbourne and 64,429 for Collingwood.

Roffey admitted, “I may well go down in history as the only Melbourne president who has ever said anything positive about Collingwood - but in the context of the conversation I was having around the size of the club and crowd attendances I don’t think there is any confusion for supporters.

As a Liverpool supporter I understand crowd noise and the “power of Anfield”. I genuinely love the Melbourne Football Club it is my number one sporting passion. I will be incredibly honest though, I don’t particularly enjoy our brand of football. I find it dull and predictable and struggle to get excited by it. I want to but I can’t. I get more enjoyment watching the brand of our AFLW team. Would love to see more attacking flair, overlap run. I want to see some positive intent with ball in hand. Will continue to be a member and turn up to games. Obviously happy when we win games but there is a difference between being happy with a win and excited by a win. Would love to feel the latter more.

Luckily for you I copied the relevant quotes from the article so you can inform yourself and stop attacking people who are commenting on the MFC's presidents quotes in the article.

Regardless of who said what when, and also apologies if this has been noted, but I can't imagine the extra 10, 20, 30,000 'members' we're trying to attract will contain many game-attending noise makers. Those types are going to come from that captured and invested early-re-joining 40,000 passionates.

And, I'd prefer attention being directed at making game attendance attractive, in ways suggested by some good posts here.

[ Step One: GET RID OF THE IMPOSED (and so often unintelligible anyway) BROADCAST NOISE!!! (... he said, noisily...) ]

I don’t want to be like them, cheer like them, go near them. I’d rather us be somewhat civil. We are also quite loud for our numbers in my opinion. Roffey and pert need to be careful. We don’t have generations of Centrelink recipients with nothing else to do but go to the football. We have supporters who have lives.

It's impossible to be like Collingwood; for starters, how does one operate with half a brain, no societal consciousness, limited reasoning and a distinctive penchant for toothlessness?
