it’s a 2week con. I don’t understand your stance on Andrews. He was an excellent Politician, but I wouldn’t want want to do business with him personally.. but he did bring Melbourne into the 21st Century

i wanna go back to the 20th century ... wahwah, sob,sob

to when it was beautiful melbourne

Well, that's a matter for the rugby codes and soccer. I'm a footy and cricket man 😀

But given a boutique (approx 20K) rectangular stadium isn't needed for the Games, I'd say its lower on the priority queue.

In the end, footy and cricket will be the biggest beneficiaries of the Games due to the new Gabba.

Yeh understandable just curious about a Brisbanite POV and the mention of legacy benefit. Lots of politicians jumped on the Matildas with the Women's World Cup for photo opportunities and what not but now that train has left the station it's all very quiet. Brisbane could definitely do with one though

Why stop there? Go back another century when it was Marvellous Melbourne and had the highest living standards in the world.

When the Population was under 3 million…

The boutique stadium for the Lions/Heat at RNA also makes sense as the RNA will be used for the Equestrian at the Games. It'll be used every year for the annual EKKA event as well as adds more capacity around the inner city for sports event, festivals and concerts. I do think the State Government should be chipping in more for it though given the displacement of the Lions/Heat from the Gabba.

But re: the comments about using Metricon, both the Lions and Heat themselves flat out refused that option. And Springfield isn't even in Brisbane and would need a tonne of works to upgrade it also.

All in all, both the Gabba rebuild and RNA stadium are needed and will provide legacy benefits well after the Games. The actual dollars are a lot I know, but so is everything these days. Definitely reckon the pros outweigh the cons.

If you needed a 20k stadium for a show you'd probably have one by now. Sounds to me like they'll dismantle the temporary components and otherwise struggle to fill it.

The sports really should just be using Metricon, but I understand the transport issues make it so unpalatable. If we weren't so lazy/cheap/stupid for most of the last 100 years we'd have express rail between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and you could zip down in half and hour and it wouldn't be an issue.

Same issue for the Gabba. Expanding it to such a size that was never suited to its location then being surprised it doesn't work out. Then building a new train station so they don't want to move it. Now they're locking in building it right up in its current spot so it cost an absolute fortune. They better hope they get it done right and with some of future proofing given the cost.

Just maybe if they do get it right it will be great. But I'd be tempted to start from scratch somewhere with more room and margin for error.

They could find 8k just by getting rid of the deck chair area behind one end of the ground and the big LED screen on the wing behind the benches that shows neds betting ads on repeat.

That’s the reason why the max crowd in recent years has been mid 30’s rather than 40’s.

But I believe the Lions have found that the extra corporate seats and screens make more money than regular paying patrons.

I wouldn't doubt it, but it looks a bit odd having deck chairs in a football ground. That said there's a big pirate ship in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stadium.

Yes. When we threw everything into the incinerator on a Sunday afternoon, just to see what colour the Flames would become. :)

Yep. All valid points. And here we are dealing with those decisions of last 100 years.

Originally Albion was slated for a new stadium on the site of the old greyhound/harness racing track. I thought that made sense given it would have been a large greenfield site with good transport links.

But understand the Gabba and Lang Park people kicked up a fuss about having a competitor, and as you say, the Gabba decision is likely about justifying Cross River Rail too.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
