AFLW Sign, Draft and Trade Period 2023-24

Recommended Posts

Surely we get a first round pick from the Bombers with some picks back

it’s perhaps something like

Bombers get Gay and pick GCS 35 and 53

MFC get pick EFC 13 and Lily Johnson

GCS get Charlotte Wilson and pick MFC 56

Port get MFC pick 74

like MFC to have 5,13,19&26 👏👏👏

So effectively we started with:

R1 (16), R2 (35), R3 (56), R4 (74), Birch, Gay, Sherriff, West, Wilson

and ended up at:

R1 (5), R2 (12), R2 (23), R2 (40), R4 (74), Johnson

Six spots left on the list as it stands, so presumably we'll pick up a DFA or two (or three if we pass in 74)... or some left-field cross coder. Thankful at least that we didn't lose a single player on my "keep at all costs" list but not sure that we've been adequately compensated for the outgoings. AFL will be happy to have finally weakened us in this regard; even still, I reckon they'd have wanted a few more big names out.

We also farewelled Ivy, Johnson and Fowler.

So I'm seeing that as 8 players out, 1 in for 7 list spots (assuming everyone else re-signs).

We've got 4 top 40 draft picks and pick 74.

Are we looking at adding a couple of delisted free agents?

Mick Stinnear mentioned at the fan forum the other night that we have a rookie spot that we will look to Ireland to fill.

70% of applicants for the draft have nominated nationally. So it's definitely heading more towards being a true national draft, which is exciting.

Yes this is interesting.  I would assume that the highly rated girls who know they are going to be drafted would be in a position to nominate the state in which they want to play, knowing they will be selected.  But for the girls who aren't so confident of being picked up going national definitely improves their chances.  For example the Eagles and Dockers only have seven picks between them, so if you nominate WA you'd need to be in at least the top seven selections for the entire state or you're going to miss out.  There is always the Supplemental Selection Period after the draft, but I'm sure they don't want to be left hanging and hoping.

Awesome, obviously we've had a fairly good success rate and have only become more knowledgeable in spotting players whose skills translate not just to footy but our game plan. Also would have a good reputation in terms of attracting and keeping quality players.

Assuming we get an Irish rookie, that would leave one spot if we use all our picks, so at least one. Wouldn't be surprised it we pass in our last pick if there's another DFA who suits our needs.

Noticed that Hannah Bowey (sister of Jake) was de-listed by North. Not sure of her playing ability and we probably shouldn't be signing players purely on genetics!

Also Sophie Casey de-listed by the Pies - another one in the experience, know what you get category, though on the older side.

Looks like Mikayla Williamson is a potential draftee.. AFL website write up

Position: Midfielder
Height: 174cm
State: Victoria, Dandenong Stingray/Pines
Nomination: Victoria

One of the very top athletes in the draft, Williamson set a new Combine record for the 2km time trial, taking five seconds off Nina Morrison and Tarni Evans' long-standing time of 7:14. She finished second in the agility test and fourth in the standing vertical jump. Wins the footy and can clear congestion with ease.

Dees will be boosted by the addition of Jemma Rigoni.  She’s got real pace and plays like a youngster who’s grown up with footy skills built up over many years.
AFL website write up…

Position: Winger
Height: 172cm
State: Victoria, Oakleigh Chargers/Ashburton
Nomination: Victoria

Slightly older at 19, Rigoni missed out on her draft year after suffering a torn ACL in 2021. She's returned to both under-18 and VFLW level (with Casey Demons) in fine style, providing plenty of pace and neat kicking skills on the wing. Can also play off the flanks if needed.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
