Here we go, round 9!

Saturday 1.05PM at Casey Fields

(likely our last game at Casey this season).

Fremantle's Casey win-loss record: 1-2
Melbourne's win-loss record against Fremantle: 5-2 (Melbourne last played Fremantle, in R6 2022B, a 30-point win)
Fremantle's 2023 formline: Fremantle's 4 wins have come against teams 10th and below, with 4 losses to teams 8th and above.

Both teams have played West Coast (Melb +70; Freo +8), Collingwood (Melb +42; Freo -21), Hawthorn (Melb +59; Freo +13), North (Melb +23; Freo -45) and Geelong (Melb +49; Freo -24). Fremantle are coming off a 24-point win against 10th-placed St Kilda. A player of theirs to watch for is Aine Tighe, a super athletic genuine matchwinner.

An article on Paxy and her name change (which is a name change only, not pronouns, as it turns out).

Plus the infamous dog incident, which could have been much worse:

Also, if selected (!), it will be Shelley Heath's 50th game. We really went a week early with out appreciation of her in the last matchday thread but why not go again! In checking that this was indeed 50 games for Heater, I came across an article describing her drafting at pick 44 in 2018 as a shock. It seems that Melbourne was the only club that showed interest (she'd only been playing footy since age 15). Wasn't even watching the draft when her name was called!

From the beginning we've lauded her tackling ability - hard but typically fair and controlled, in a way that is increasingly valuable. She's also probably the most noted tagger of the league to this point, with some seriously big-name scalps. The addition of more attacking attributes has now sent her to another level, still aged just 23.

"That's basically how it unfolded – as simple as filling out a form."

Paxy actually has also updated her pronouns to 'Champion'. If you don't call her that in formal addresses, you get stacked-and-whacked.

As for Shelley Health, she causes her own controversy because biologically she is 'the adorable cousin/niece', but in football she identifies as 'the person who is about to ruin your day'.

I’m on my way to banner-making right now. It’s usually on Thursdays but some of the girls are coming to help us make it and they have training on Thursdays so it’s tonight for this week. Will be funny if Heater turns up to make her own milestone banner. 🤭

PS the Club didn’t organise this. The girls requested it because… well, the girls. 🥰

Another Aine in the oppo, @WalkingCivilWar!

Get 'em to the Dees, I say!

We Áines are everywhere! It’s only a matter of time before we land one at the Dees. ❤️💙

Fremantle 'player to watch' in the MFC site preview is Mim Strom

We had a kid called Campbell at school. Nickname, 'Soups'.

Mim would be close to candidacy for the same...

Freo will be game but we have way more class

12 of the girls attended banner tonight and we had THE. MOST. FUN. EVER. So much laughter and mucking around but I tell ya what… when it came to the actual cutting out of the letters and the taping etc. they were machines. They don’t do half measures, absolute perfectionists. Jordy at one point cut part of a letter about two millimetres outside the line. She was really annoyed with herself. I said “It’s all good. You see it because you’re looking at it up close. On the day, no one will know.” She said, “But I’ll know!” I reckon that pretty much sums up the standards they set for themselves.

The girls, having completed Heater’s milestone banner…

Tayla is so bloody fierce on the field but off-field she’s super sweet and gentle and softly-spoken. And quite cheeky…

Tay’s tape shenanigans

One would think they make banners every week…

Banner-making with the Dees

Banno making use of her long limbs…

I asked Jordan about her injury and the progress. She said just as the plantar fascia had healed another (way less serious) foot issue arose. She’s confident she’ll be available by the time finals start.

🤞🏼

Last night half the team were at banner making.  Both Gabby Colvin and Tayla Harris told me they're not playing.  Gabby mentioned she's close with her archilles but it's just been frustrating.  Tayla is being patient, doesn't want to risk her form for finals, and was pretty upbeat, she's close.

I want to joke that Tahlia is actually wearing long pants, but with her long legs, they come across as shorts :)

Shelley is so cute, her fierce tenacity on the football ground defies her appearance.

Shelleyyyy Heathyyyy!

@Dees_In_October - the club has lent into adding the y to Heath rather than going with Heater.

Controversy in the nickname space!

Every week I find something new to be impressed and deelighted by this team.

What a wonderful team.

Ebony Antonio is also a massive out.  She's out for the rest of the season, having just had surgery for PCL

Late change: Georgia Gall to debut tomorrow. I don’t know who’s out.

I totally jinxed her by naming her a player to watch! Will make things easier but I kinda wanted to see Gillard go against her.

I reckon Heathy off the field, Heater on the field, seems apt for her on- vs. off-field vibe haha.

Gall's a defender I think? Exciting to have a debut but I don't like mystery outs!

She is a defender. 183cm. It’ll be interesting to see who she’s replacing. Excited for her!

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
