He's an RFA so either this year or next, the balls in our court.

Given Adelaide have a F/S at ~ 10-15, they don't need their Pick 5 so we could give them Petty, 38 and 42 (for points) in exchange for Pick 5. They could alternatively try to split #5 with GCS 8 and 9, and use one of those picks for Petts whilst holding onto a pick for points, but it requires more from Adelaide to make that work.

We are winners either way i think. Either hold onto Petts, which will be better for it in 2025 with a full pre-season or we get a top 10 pick.

Read somewhere the Crows would love to get Draper at pick 5 if he’s still there. Local lad who’s very highly rated. Not sure they will be keen to let pick 5 go if they think he will still be there.

Think we need to hold onto Petty. Not worried about the key forward stocks , worried about our key position defenders. Another year will roll around for Mcdonald (32) and May (33!) and they’re already getting on. We’ll lose Tomlinson. Disco could go back but he’s fairly light and more of an interceptor. Jed Adams a mile off it. Can understand us going after Battle, but he’ll go to Hawks. Think a lot of Dees fans have short memories, Petty was on track to be a brilliant KPD for us in 21/22, give him a full pre season down there and I’ve got no doubt he’ll be back to his best

I would expect Hamish Davis may climb into top 50, played midfield in WAFL colts on the weekend for the first time I believe 40 possessions 18 contested.

With previous proven scoreboard impact and at 191cm, huge tank I anticipate clubs to have more interest

He will be an interesting one to watch.  Showed glimpses in the championships amongst tough opponents.   Expect late draft pick or rookie in my view.

Agree. Crows in line to get Draper and he’s a future star.  Crows 1st pick would be off limits imv

anyway I think we need to keep Petty. Premiership defender.  Can play forward or back.  Reset his confidence and he’s a star.

I really hope we hold onto Petty- key position player of his quality and age are extremely difficult to come by. Should be one of the best defenders in the comp in the coming years.
But the longer we go without him signing a contract the less likely it is that he resigns.
An argument could be made that it would be foolish for him to sign now after we have lowered his wage value by playing him out of position. But given how keen he was to leave last year I’d be very nervous come trade period if he hasn’t resigned.

AFL proposes change to NGA access for this year’s draft - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1173998

Proposal is to scrap the restriction on matching bids, reverting to NGA rules when the doggies were allowed to match a bid for JUH at pick 1. Full details still to be released and could be some caveats to it.

Doesn't really affect us this year with Mentha not really being talked about as a top 40 pick. However could be good news for us next year with Tarion Ah-Mu showing significant promise this year as a bottom age ruck/fwd prospect for the stingrays.

I haven’t seen as much of the National Championships and Coates League games as I have in the past but it seems fairly clear to me that there’s one glaring difference between this year and the last.

In 2023, it was Harley Reid first and daylight next.  At the head of the following pack was Colby McKercher so North did well to snare him, although the lure of Tasmania will soon be a factor with him.

Time will tell, but I think Jason Taylor has done well to get Caleb Windsor and Koltyn Tholstrup although I felt at the time that with our draft hand, we could have tried for one more young player from the top 40 players.

By way of contrast, 2024 is far more open and there is a plethora of opinion as to who fits into the top dozen players. There are candidates from everywhere putting their hands up so having first pick in this draft won’t be as big a deal on the face of it, as last year.

For example, hard nosed midfielder Harvey Langford who appeals to me as the prototypical Jason Taylor selection and who shared the Larke Medal was ranked at only 17 by Davo-27 (see above).

The Power rankings and Phantom drafts that come out in coming months are going to be interesting.

In JT I trust then. That's exciting.

If we go for a fwd in the draft no more athletic, potential players ie weiderman

if we can snatch a low first round pick 15-17 from Carlton or Brisbane, go for Jobe shanahan, got something about him. Looks same mould as a mihocek, van rooyen , darling. They are the fwds u want in afl ( competitive beasts)

A lot of the fwds that dominate school footy and tac cup rarely translate it to afl, mainly because the guys in afl are all taller and athletic too.

Only four players in the F-S/Academy categories so perhaps not as compromised a draft as we originally thought. Query however, the non-inclusion of the SA trio of the Camporeale twins (Carlton F-S) and Welsh (Adelaide F-S).

4. Levi Ashcroft (Brisbane F-S)
7. Leonardo Lombard (Gold Coast Academy)
12. Sam Marshall (Brisbane Academy)
20. Isaac Kako (Essendon NGA)

It’s a quirky list.  Lots of strong top 30 players left out !!!! SA trio of the Camporeale twins (Carlton F-S) and Welsh (Adelaide F-S) are all genuinely top 30.

Last weeks Coates League player of the week was Gippsland Power captain Xavier Lindsay.  Had 32 disposals in the midfield, with high efficiency, using his left foot deadly disposal.  He had the good mix of skill, smarts and athletic ability.  Lock him in as a future star.

Xavier Lindsay

absolutely starred in the finale for Vic Country.  Plays like ? Josh Kelly.  He’s good in the inside and tackles well. He can run and spread and use his elite left foot for passes or kicks 50+ metres.

Cal’s phantom has dropped. For some reason( my fault I’m sure) I can’t add links. If somebody else would put it up that would be great.
His top 30 is a fair bit different from anything else I seen. Showing just how even and deep this years draft is.

I reckon Petty has checked out and is looking at that attractive offer from the Crows. He doesnt want to injure himself beyond those hes carrying and does enough to keep them interested.

look at Trainor  as a replacement. Our existing defence stocks are good

Jobe Shanahan could be a roughie as aforward. but ill trust those who keep a close eye on these developing players.

It’s a very exciting draft. Touted as a midfielders draft but now has many key position players rated in the top 30. Depth that means some gems could be found as late as the third round.
Im hoping we trade into this draft and have a real crack at it.

Agreed - ive read some positive things and we can allow his development under May and co for 2-3 years. Would be the almost perfect transition. Key is whether we can snag pick 5 from the Crows for Petts. It is way overs IMO as Petts has shown zilch this year. But then again Crows next pick in Round 2 of the draft is also way unders.

The trade goal this year (If Petts does not commit beyond 2025) has to be Trainor plus a silky plus an athletic and mobile midfielder inside the top 10.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
