didn't a young nathan buckley do just that? i can't remember all the details

as I understand it he did something like that but at the time Collingwood had to give up a lot to get him back after the first year. It was mentioned in passing by Leigh Matthews on 3aw last week but unfortunately he didn't have time to tell the whole story.

About 4 years back there were a number of good picks out of SA and the Adelaide clubs tried to warn interstate teams from drafting them with comments like they will be returning. They were rapped over the knuckles by the AFL and I can't recall how it finally ended.

PS Here's the Buckley story... he had a one year exit clause with the Bears to the club of his choice. Apparently he could have stayed with the SANFL and still ended up at Collingwood the next year I think so he had great bargaining power:

I think it is more likely aimed at the Tassie team. what WA or Qld kid would want to be sent there. Before 3 years is up they would experiencing " mental problems"

Like Luke Jackson did in Melbourne, and conversely Kozzie didn’t? It’s horses for course, and a lot more to do with culture and the individual.

This reductive thinking that ‘young people don’t want to live in Tasmania’ that you keep trying to sell is such an over simplification. You still can’t tell us why it doesn’t apply to Geelong - with half the population.

Might give the likes of Laurence Angwin and Lucas Cook a  extra year on their career!

Didn't Lucas Cook get cut after the first year of his contract?

Geelong is 60 mins from Melb and offers more to young people. Remember draftees are barely 18. The cats have had their share of go homes. Why do you want to deny it will be a problem for the Tassie team?

Have you lived in Geelong? Saying it ‘offers more to young people’ is a huge stretch. I grew up there.

The players like living there because it’s not a big city.

This is only a ‘major boost’ to the Northern clubs because some of them simply don’t have football club cultures, and so forcing 18 year olds to stay longer is the only way to keep them there.

It doesn’t solve anything.

Doesn't effect the Swans who have a rather envious culture this century. Don't seem to lose their young colts at sll much. Even hold onto older ones for 11years!!

I don't look at this as a way for clubs to keep draftees longer, to me it's simply another layer of protection for clubs. There will still be go home factor and there will still be players like JHF who feel the city isn't for them and force a trade. What this does though is give the club a bit more leverage and a chance to be more adequately compensated in trades if these situations occur.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
