Just wondering about people's thoughts on Jack Bell? Been good recently and could be a smokey for the mid season draft considering Collingwood is crying out for a ruckman. They could do a lot worse.

I think he is showing improvement….maybe a rookie ?      Ferris- White , where is he currently playing ?

He played well. Might be a chance again in AFL…could replace a couple .Brown and TMac .

Sestan’s size and body shape remind me a lot of Allen Jakovich.  If he turns out to be half as good at football, it will be another recruiting master stroke by Jason Taylor.

Agreed... hanging out to watch him live.

Game's obviously changed a fair bit from back then DOF.  Alot less space to lead into.  So much defensive running going on now.

Jakovich was pretty quick over the first 10 - 20 meters also if my memory serves me well.

May take a season or two to build a tank but there's certainly something there.  Time will tell where that something goes eh.

Like you, I see Sestan as very low risk, potentially very high ceiling.  Trust in JT.

Developing quite rapidly W, particularly from 2nd half of last season onwards from what im seeing.

His game at the hanger on Sunday, more so his second half, was outstanding for mine and along with Harmes i felt he was the difference on the day.  Laurie & Dunstan also impacted.

Im assuming you saw this one anyway but just my view.

Would say he's not that far away (as in another pre-season or so to build up the extra strength/running) but could also push up to the AFL now for short stints off the bench in the odd game here & there as long as he wasn't being asked to play every game for half a season or so.

Similarities to McInerney IMHO.

The cliché that big men take time to develop could apply. Saints had him listed as a rookie a few seasons back. So his opportunities and progress may have been stifled by Covid-19. Didn't get the opportunity to play in Casey's premiership team last season with Sam Weideman being preferred. Best all round performance I can recall for Casey from Jack. Not satisfied with just being a tap ruckman, his game is showing definite signs of becoming more rounded. With his clearance work from the centre bounce, boundary throw-ins and ball ups a highlight in this game. Plus he reads the flight of the ball and positions himself well around the ground to assist his team mates, commencing or participating in chains of possession. Kicking that last goal of the match for Casey was the 'cherry on top'. If Jack can maintain this form he will certainly be on the recruitment radar.

Great to see Marty right up there.

Really rated him as a decent medium tall prospect down back provided he could clean up his decision making / disposal.

Not sure we persevered enough but anyways.

Disco not that dissimilar?

i'd prefer to see turnrovers per disposal rather than just straight turnovers

higher possession players are going to have higher turnovers in general

Yes true DC.  Can be done as a percentage i guess.

The other cheap way of doing it is to categorise into rough positions and only compare like with like.

Obviously it is unfair to compare a Bowey to say Clarry, Tracc or Viney in the turnover stakes.

However his turnover count is def more relative to May's, Lever's, Rivers', Hibb's etc.

Having said that.... you can't get much lower than 4th lowest!  Albeit it's only based on two matches so far.  Probably need at least 5 to 6 to be a bit more robust as a guide.

Deak Smith shut down Walla and used the ball better this week.

Thanks for the info. Any idea if they are trying to develop Deak to be a lock-down defender? Was drafted as more of an outside mid, from memory.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
