Drafting = Recruiting in terms of picking the right sort of player and then the biggie ... development

So it's all encompassing AF

The big question is if we remain strong how do we get hold of elite young draftees?

Remembering that we traded up to get Clarrie and LJ and even though we lost Luke, we quickly did some sharp recruiting to replace him (Grundy) ... and if Freo bottom out or have a lousy year we'll get a pick in the top 8 at least (trade up again from that pick?)

Plus the 2 other picks from Freo which Taylor will no doubt use wisely (does he miss?)

There's a lot to be excited about and we have every right to be confident looking ahead

We didn't trade up to get LJ.

Stand corrected ... so did we tank to get him? haha

Not at all.

We were genuinely poor that was hit with a significant injury list from.day 1 of pre season right up to the last game of the round.

No you do not. What opposition Player wants to line up against Viney?

Of course he makes the odd mistake. His area of the ground is RED HOT

You expect every possession and delivery to be perfect and when it isn’t you crack it

Grow up Sunshine

Do you really think opposition players go jesus i'm on Viney today i'm shaking in my boots is that your thinking.

I know who needs to grow up, one day you will.

All our best players played nearly every game in 2019.  Viney missed 4 games but that was it

Look a bit closer and check the numbers ... you'll find I'm correct.  A lot was made of the off-season surgeries but that was overplayed

They never come off the multis

I know someone who worked for Sportsbet. The multis were their biggest profit makers. Now I suspect "bet with mates" has taken over - multis on steroids.

Besides all that tanking goes on and will continue to go on.  And I don't have a problem with tanking despite it being treated like some sort of foreign disease

As long as drafting exists, tanking will exist.  The 2 go hand in glove

It seems I had a post not allowed to be posted and I can only assume that the post in the admins minds might have hurt some peoples feelings, it seems it not what you know but who you know if I get banned for this so be it.

I tell you what.
i will put up $100 if you go eyeball to eyeball with Jack Viney and tell him

“You have no Football IQ and you play the game like Rugby”

I doubt many would enjoy JV’s tackling, he doesn’t miss often

you are just a classic lounge chair warrior, mouthing off about the Vice Captain

Time to sit down and admit you are spouting hot air

3165 you are being antagonistic and frankly speaking a lot of drivel.

He'd be a coaches dream in terms of all the selfless roles he can play and does play

We've got plenty of other playmakers to do what Brayshaw once did

As you said, how others who criticise him can't see all that is baffling

My recent critique on Gus is he tends to try to bite off too much with his kicks (he's not a great kick under 30m) and has been fumbly the last few weeks.

When Salem is fit again, we'll have a tough decision to make, because for mine, I'd take Salem's poise and ball use every day of the week.

So we'll have to find another role for Gus.

Settle down get back in your high chair, big deal he's a VC you do know it's vice captain not Victoria Cross there is nothing courageous about being Vice captain, and again you still do not understand what I said but keep trying.

Of course I know what the VC is. Both very important rolls. I don’t think many others understand your vitriol against Jack Viney either

$100 is waiting….

He is not turning the ball over anywhere near as much as what you believe

If it happens once or twice that doesn't equal a lot of times

Go back and watch yesterday's game and point out all his errors.  But do the same with every player. Don't isolate it all down to one player like others tend to do on this site

Oliver & Petracca turn the ball over all the time in their endeavour to play attacking football.

Would you be happy for Brayshaw to kick the ball backwards so as not to make an error?  Serious question

It's football AF, no risk, no reward

His DE Rating this year is sitting at about 84% overall.  That's elite

We must get watching different games as what you see, I can't see

But in everything (out of bounds or a score etc) the ball has to be beyond the line - not the post or padding

hey i don't make the rules or the interpretations.

besides, i only pointed out the rules don't even define goal/point lines precisely

anyway if you include padding it was touched, if you don't it was a goal. And you also have to take into account those situations where the ball has the faintest of touches on the padding, sometimes only picked up on the audio graph. it has been my observation over the last few years that they do include the padding when determining "over the line" whether the official rules say so or not

Give me Salem's cleanness at ground level and ball use any day.

I'd say Hibbo is out, don't mess with achillies.

Is that Achilles Jones from Manangatang, per chance?

For those wishing to stroll down memory lane:

"Achilles Jones is discovered on his lonely farm near Manangatang kicking wheatbags around, as it saves him dragging them. The talent scout of the Galahs, a struggling AFL football team, plucks him from obscurity and soon he is kicking footballs and rocketing the team to victory in the Grand Final."

Salem is clean with the ball but pace has dropped off, but still links up with May and co, would not rush him back until he is fully fit, but who do you take out if McVee or Bowey are playing the role?

Not sure why some feel the need to smash the absolute [censored] out of somewhere else on here simply because the opinions on a player differs.

There was a fair few smashing Viney last week on the game day thread and post game thread for playing a poor game. Some of the discussion was justified imo as I too also felt he had a poor game against Sydney. I look at someone like James Jordon and thought he was far more influential then Viney and yet we know who was relegated to the sub role.

He was better this week in terms of intensity and physicality, but his ball use use and wanting to do too much still worries me.

You call what I say about Viney a rugby player and lack of footy IQ Vitriol, you really have led a sheltered life.

Salem's DE rating wouldn't be all that flash if we use his year last season as an example.  But often the DE Rating is a furphy if looked at closer

Anyway, when Salem becomes available both he and Brayshaw will play.

And how on Earth is a backman kicking to a contest further afield somehow a mistake anyway?

If there is no free target there is no other choice but to kick to that contest (you can't head for the boundary - pinged)

And the boffin's determine that the player kicking the ball is at fault if the contest is won by the opposition.  It's the fault of the forward not the player who kicks the ball

If the ball is kicked forward to a contest, by default, the player in the contest has called for the ball and has an obligation to win the ball (he has already failed to create separation)

"You called for it, you get it"

So a clanger applied to the player delivering the kick is just plain wrong

Someone called into ABC radio anonymously a few years ago and said the goal reviewer was any low paid employee of the AFL that was rostered for that game.  No expertise, qualifications etc.  The caller knew because there mate did it over the weekend and apparently just kind of winged it. Wouldn't surprise me if it was and still is like this.

I remember that call

How utterly ridiculous.  Sheer madness but the public lap it up

Exactly. People forget that Brayshaw’s  kicking options are limited. Sometimes he has no choice but to “hack & hope” Yesterday there were a few fumbles early by a lot of players ( I put that down to the Perth Turf which certainly had a different bounce & many players slipped over) But Angus certainly got very reliable later in the game.
A couple of kicks across the centre to the opposite wing were spot on.

Gus is playing that role. He sweeps behind the stoppage (front of defensive contest), which is the role Salem and Bowey played in 2021.

Agreed, and yes, I'd like 2021 Salem, please.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
