Here’s a simple message for the front of the banner this week

”Lift your heads and play like demons!” - Checker Hughes

We don’t ever issue a rebuke to our players on the banner, regardless of to whom the quote’s attributed. It would be great if you could make your point in another thread. There’s plenty to choose from. Please let this thread remain free of this sort of “advice” to the team. Thanks.

Here’s another one.

“Get it done”

Hardly a rebuke at all @WalkingCivilWar. No criticism or disapproval but encouragement. If I wanted to denigrate I would’ve included the first part of Checker’s speech.

It’s telling the boys to keep their chins up and fight on.

We clearly don’t agree on how your suggestion would be received by our players, but rather than you bringing up [censored] that happened to you 13 years ago, or suggesting even more unsuitable  banner content, you heard my request and have replied in a mature, non-abrasive way and for that I’m grateful.

There’s myriad ways to let the players know how some fans feel after a loss. The banner isn’t one of them. The Club simply wouldn’t allow it, and nor should they.

Serious question.

I've never sat near demon army section but do you legitimately need a membership to sit around that vicinity??

On most home days, no you don't.  The first couple of rows are taken up by people with key roles in the DA, but on most home games, unless the club or AFL issue reserved seating like King's Birthday, the bay is pretty welcoming.  Plus M4 has been set aside for Melbourne supporters to sit alongside the DA if they wish to, and it gets treated like an extension to the DA.  Plenty has changed in the DA since 2010, since that time it's had a change of leaders, and it prides itself on being inclusive. We have over 1000 members this year, making it one of the largest cheer squads.

If I may, Kat. I just wanna add a really important point… while fans are always welcome in our bay (Dees fans only, of course) we encourage as many people as possible to take out DA memberships since fundraising is our main source of income.

As for seating, the first 8-10 rows are DA reserved seats, with the first four rows being ticketed of sorts, with an actual seating plan, albeit loose due to absent members on any given day. Further up the back of the bay Dees fans either with or without DA membership are certainly welcome.

Anyways I’m on my to Gosch’s now to assist with the Reconciliation Week BBQ. No fundraising with this one, just the awesome feeling that comes with doing stuff for our Club. 😊

Not bad at all, something to consider next time one thinks about making a club donation or buying coterie raffle tickets.

It’s not a huge amount of money. Donations are always welcome, of course. The sales of DA merch and raffle tickets are what brings the $$$ in.

please post a link to buy the merch WCW. I need to freshen up my Dees wardrobe. Some DA gear could be just the ticket.

And here you've highlighted the context in which Hughes made that comment - he screamed it at them after a lengthy spray, at a period of time where coaching was a completely different kettle of fish.  You cannot disguise it with words alone as "being encouraging".  It wasn't Hughes' intention at the time.

Thanks in advance, BDA!

At the moment the Big Freeze beanies are available, for the same price as in the shops. We don’t make any money from selling them, we sell them to support Neale and FightMND.

Highly recommend getting a DA membership!  Everyone is so lovely, and if you're going to interstate games (or live interstate like me), it makes a difference to have a passionate crew to sit with.

WE’RE BULLISH ON THE DEES

GIVING THEM THE BLUES

How long is the creative process for coming up with the tagline? Does it take a bit of time brainstorming with a group of people or is it like when I'm frantically trying to come up with a name for a new chair at the last minute?

Also is it a week by week thing or do the lines get decided in advance?

It varies. Sometimes the Club decides. Sometimes our DA leaders decide (they welcome suggestions, too). Sometimes it’s a combination. The partners have a say in what goes with their logo. Everything must be approved by the  Club.

Oh and just between you and me, Layz: all banners from all clubs must meet the AFL standard (no singling out an oppo player, no swearing, for example) but our banners don’t ever need checking coz Melbourne. ❤️💙

Don’t tell anyone 🤫😝🙃

WCW, can you advise why the banner is never turned both ways so people in the Southern stand can see the message.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
