Just finished watching a replay after being there on the day. My first premiership to see live for our club in my 50 odd years of supporting them.
We sat with the demon army and it was great to sit with such passionate supporters when we were outnumbered but not out-voiced! Thanks to the DA for welcoming us in.

The surface - yeah it was both pretty soft and also pretty lumpy. Kate Roffey is spot on, passionate supporters missed out on tickets and it's not good enough to host a granny in such a small stadium. We really were up against it in a number of aspects and it was great the way we just ground out the win.

After all my bagging of it, Springfield was a pretty good facility and it reminded me of a good local footy ground when I was a kid in Brisbane. We used to get 7 to 10,000 people and grand finals back then which creates a great atmosphere. But for a national final, it's just not big enough and shouldn;t have been held there.

Anyway's the game.
The umpiring, summed up for me when one called a free kick and another play on and Banno ran in and tackled the lions player. Can't wait for 4 umps to be on the field next year hey.

The best:

This game was all about defense.
Taylor Harris getting her cheek split open, getting up and then hitting the next contest even harder. She's so tough and competetive.

Shelly Heath, knocked sideways in a bump on the far wing, stuck her hand out for a one handed tackle on her oponent. Tackle of the day.

Kate Hore, didn't get many attacking opportunities but she laid some brilliant tackles and Mick's move to put her behind the ball in the last quarter paid off in spades.

West and Hanks were just fantastic, but I don't think Purcell was far behind them.

Paxy - She was off for a fair bit of the game towards the end but she was a great steadier for us too. Really hope she sticks with us next year.

Banno - She also made some fantastic defensive efforts but even though she wasn't rewarded with a goal, she had some great fantastic offensive runs and set Mackin up for that first goal. She also had a certain goal if that run down tackle (with a correct disposal / kick) from Fitsimons wasn't paid against us.
She actually had three chances for a goal in the last 60 seconds of play, the last being as the siren sounded. She was loose in front of goals and would have certainly got the goal if it hadn't sounded. Watching her screaming at us as the Demon army screamed back at her when the siren sounded is a moment I'll never forget.

Eden Zanker - She really was cooked by the last quarter. She had the staggers. Harris was playing further up the ground and she became the key forward. I watched her just keep willing herself into lead after lead. The way she just kept leading and presenting for her team mates was just brilliant and summed up the way all of our players were not going to relent.

My Bog - I know I know, midfielders right? but for me it was our defenders.
Maddy Gay had an absolute cracker of a game. But it was watching an 18 year old Tahlia Gillard absolutely stich up the leading goal kicker in Jessie Wardlaw that blew me away.
It was great to watch her live, her closing speed, her body work and the way she just kept getting those long arms through to spoil with impeccable timing. I think she was our most valuable player on the ground on the day in the way she shut down their most dangerous player.

If Gabby Colvin is back into the defensive line next year, we could potentially have Gillard and Harris creating chaos through the ruck and into our forward line. I love the way Stinnear just swings the moves with freedom and we've got an incredible array of talent to do this with now.

Go Dees

No mention of Lauren Pearce, Brownie?

This is a last-ditch effort to implore y’all to come to Gosch’s tomorrow morning.

The girls need and genuinely  appreciate all our love and support. They won us a Premiership ffs.

Even if you haven’t been following the W this season, rock up anyways! And bring your kids if you have any. If you don’t have any, bring someone else’s! There’ll be face-painting. Not just for kids either. I know for a fact that they’ll happily paint the MFC emblem on the arm of a non-kid if she nags them enough 🤭

It’s never NOT fun at these events. Especially when it’s for our W team. And we couldn’t hope for better weather.

PLEASE COME AND GIVE OUR GIRLS THE LOVE THEY TRULY DESERVE!!!

Yep, she was up and in it all day jjc, good point. It wasn't just her ruck work but she contested around the ground really well all day.

I wouldn't miss it for the world! It's a little embarrassing but I've never actually been to Gosch's Paddock before. How do I access it? Where can I park? Any tips would be appreciated!

Edit: and can I bring my dog?

It's on the corner of Punt Road and Swan Street, really accessible.  It's actually a really short walk from Richmond Station.  I'm leaving the car at home and getting the train there.  The Number 70 tram also goes right past the oval, on Swan St.

I would park on the Botanical Garden side of the yarra (Alexander ave) and walk across the Morell bridge to Gosch's park. Paid metered parking is the closest, but if you look around the area, maybe you could find some time restricted free parking.

I have friends who’d jump at the chance of being kid-less for a few hours. Some of them would even be down for a few weeks. 😂

Hmmm, not a lot of folks online right now. Glass half full me says maybe they’re all getting ready to head on over to Gosch’s for today’s Premiership celebration. Glass half empty me says the lazy bastards are still asleep.

To those who are coming today… thank you! You’re in for a wonderful fun time.

To everyone else… there’s fun to be had ‘til 1pm so get your sorry ar*ses outta bed and come on over. Please.

I’m here now and the VFLW girls are training and the weather is so pleasant, so get down here!!!

A good turnout this morning.

I was down there in time for Daisy's talk. She was great, emphasised our youth after congratulating and nominating the effort of individuals on the day of the GF. Very impressive up on the stage that was made for them, by the end her voice was becoming hoarse.

Finished with everybody singing "the grand old flag", then getting selfies with the cup, and signings and chats with the players.

Good luck tonight for their B & F.

Addit: The cup was looking tarnished, really been given a workout. Like the "Velvetine Rabbit", you know your are loved when well worn

Agree Kev, was a very good day out there. Kids had a lot of fun and the players were fantastic, a couple of them even placed their premiership medal around the kids necks during the photos and signatures.

150km on a Saturday morning was a bridge too far for this old bod, WCW! Sounds like it went well, though. Super day!

Speaking of No. 31, though: in another of many happy coincidences associated with our 14 months' worth of premierships, weren't the two 31s the players centrally involved as the goalkickers in the 'turning points' of their respective games?

Thanks for the update.

M.Chaplin is always a riot and usually has L.Mithin spurring her on.

Congratulations to Katy and the other recipients.

Funny thing about last night was how many times you’d see a player’s mum take the premiership medal out of her handbag to show it off. 🤣

Also noteworthy was Pres. Kate’s speech. As per usual she spoke entirely off the cuff. She is so genuine and passionate and she never forgets anyone when it comes to thanking ppl. I especially love that she also never fails to give the DeeArmy a shoutout. Even if last night’s mention was an acknowledgment of “that rowdy table over there, oh of course, it’s the Demon Army.” Kate is adored by the players and coaching staff and this is so evident in every single acceptance speech by award recipients.

Now if y’all will excuse me ima go back to lying in a dark quiet room and elevating my leg coz hangover and sprained ankle. I deserve both so defs not looking for sympathy. 😁

But their hearts were beating true and their Demon Spirit alive and well and that grit enabled us to out tough the Lions.

Great win Dees Premiers AFLW S7

Amen to that!

I know I'd screamed myself hoarse by 3/4 time!  There was definitely plenty of Demon Spirit at the grand final, loved it!  Even the humid weather was enjoyable!

I'm sure others have said, but it was extremely loud through the TV as well (helped along by the fact that the Brisbane fans had been silenced and having much of the play down the Dees cheer squad end in the last). It actually reminded me of a comment I'd read on here about the 2021 men's GF, that mid-way through the 3rd someone in the cheer squad said something like, "Next goal, we have to go crazy and not stop til the end of the game, this is it" and well, we all know what happened then. Along similar lines, our players definitely felt that passionate support when it was really needed, against the odds. So happy for those that got up to see it live!

I don't even care if this is true, I'm choosing to believe it. (Although apparently Brisbane were always happy to have it at Marvel, so who knows?)  I liked how Kate Roffey addressed this at Gosch's the other day - she didn't sugar-coat it at all, describing what happened when the players tried to bounce it on the Saturday (nothing) and that the game plan had to shift in response. I might be misremembering her exact words but she basically said the turf was awful. Luckily for us, it all becomes part of the story now in a positive way.

Other favourite parts from Saturday:

- The spontaneous applause when the players started to arrive and how everyone (fans and players) was at the same level of excitement.

- L.Pearce's apologies for not being able to attend and then her attendance anyway!

- One of the twins (was at the back and couldn't see) asking for face painting during Daisy's speech.

- The way Kate Roffey always speaks in the down-to-earth manner of a suburban pie night yet still with appropriate gravitas to whatever the situation - she really knows how to make people feel like they're part of the club and even instill a bit of "us and against the world" to it all.

This was a hot topic at the B&F too. I said to Banno how there was never gonna be a repeat of her magnificent six-bounce gallop down the wing that day. She said, “Six?! I wouldn’t have even got one. You bounce that ball and it’s staying put, that’s how spongey it was.”

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
