Interested to see where demonlanders see who ranks where on our list. I’ve divided up the team 7-8-7 of our best possible starting 22. Each group is in no particular order, but the middle and bottom groups are the players I think can be replaced.

Here’s mine:

TOP 7

Gawn

Petracca

Oliver

May

Petty

Brayshaw

Fritsch

MIDDLE 8

Spargo

Jackson

ANB

Salem

Bowie

Viney

Langdon

BBB

Bottom 7

Lever

Sparrow

Mcdonald

Jordan

Harmes

Pickett

Rivers

Players that miss out:

Pickett I think can be covered by Bedford hence why he’s in the bottom 7.

Lever (I reckon Petty has become are more important) player so could be more easily replaced by Tomlinson.

Hunt doesn’t make the list as Salem would be the replacement for me when he’s fit and goes into my middle 8. Hunt is a bottom 7 player.

Weid can replace McDonald and BBB, hence why BBB isn’t in the top 7.

Dunstan could replace Viney or Jordan IMO.

I would replace Bowie with Bowey and Jordan with Jordon.

Salem can replace Brayshaw and Tomlinson can be a workman like replacement for Petty

I’m all about pedantry unless it’s used against me, haha

Sorry Gontee.

That’s fair, I think my thoughts about Brayshaw is that, Salem can’t be the kind of kamikaze type defender that puts himself in dangerous places and nor does grunt work like a mid-fielder. I don’t think there’s a replacement for that on our list.

And Tomlinson could replace Petty… but I would rather see Tomlinson replace Lever than Petty IMO. Lever is an amazing player obviously, but it seems like Petty is a bigger loss for the team than Lever. All only an opinion though obviously, I just currently rate Petty as being irreplaceable, more so than Lever.

I think we can replace any player that is the beauty of the side. May could hurt but I think Tomlinson is a capable replacement. We don't want to lose 2 midfielders as that would be hard to replace. Dunstan is a handy replacement.

1 Gawn

2 Oliver

3 Petracca

4 May

5 Lever

6 Frisch

7 Salem

1 Langdon

2 Brayshaw

3 Brown

4 Viney

5 Bowey

6 Pickett

7 Spargo

8 Neal-Bullen

1 McDoanld

2 Petty

3 Harmes

4 Sparrow

5 Jordon

6 Jackson

7 Hunt

Ahhhh interesting, we have Lever and Petty in opposite groups as well as Brayshaw in the secondary group and Jackson the bottom group.

There is just 22+ players of top value. We have no gaps.

As for rankings, why bother? It's the team that matters not the individuals.

Would Petracca be Petracca without Oliver? Would May be May without Lever? Not when it counts.

How you'd not have Langdon in the top group, or have Lever and Pickett in the bottom 7, is beyond me.

I know, I’m as shocked as you are.

Watching the team this year, I think Petty/May is much harder to replace than Lever. I based my ranking on ability to be replaced… so I’m saying that, I think the combination of May and Petty are more important than any other in our backline.

Obviously it’s a controversial position and I could be wildly wrong, but from what I’ve seen this year, I’d rather a May/Petty/Tomlinson than a May/Lever/Tomlinson backline.

All fair points, just like to see what people think 😁

It’s all pointless in the end… as long as we win come September.

i don't think of it as in tiers, more so as 'who can replace' in the line-up if required to play the same in the best possible 22... it means there's lots of double-ups but it's more a case of looking at who could play a similar role in our structure

may: tomlinson
salem: brayshaw
harmes: sparrow / dunstan
petracca: harmes
jackson: weideman
viney: harmes / dunstan
lever: j smith
spargo: bedford / chandler
brayshaw: jordon
gawn: jackson
oliver: sparrow
langdon: jordon / baker
bowey: rivers / hibberd
jordon: baker
rivers: hibberd
mcdonald: weideman
(weideman: m brown)
hunt: hibberd
anb: chandler / bedford
fritsch: melksham (? - very hard role to replace)
sparrow: dunstan
petty: tomlinson
pickett: bedford

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
